We describe a methodology for the characterization of the 2-wire twisted-pair subscriber loop plant for high-speed digital communications typical of evolving integrated service digital networks (ISDN's). Through use of this analytical/numerical approach it is possible to predict the resulting error probability performance as a function of signal-to-noise ratio for a given set of input parameters representing a particular subscriber loop and its noise environment, including such effects as intersymbol interference, crosstalk and impulse noise. The results are useful in penetration assessment studies of the loop plant population at a fixed grade of service measured objectively in terms of operating bit error probability. This approach is in contrast to simulation-based methodologies leading to subjective performance assessment criteria, such as eye opening measurements. In the present paper we describe the modeling assumptions together with the analytical/numerical techniques underlying this approach. Attention is restricted to time-compression multiplexing (TCM) schemes with bipolar line coding, although the approach is much more general. Numerical results are illustrated through sample graphical output of an extensive computer program implementing this approach. Finally, we illustrate the application of this approach to objective penetration assessment of the GTE subscriber loop plant utilizing data collected as part of an extensive recent survey.  相似文献

Four statistical strategies were used to evaluate whether occurrence of daily stressors increases lower gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients. Across-subject concurrent correlations between weekly stress and symptoms were positive but casually ambiguous and obscured between- and within-subject and occasion relationships. Multiple regressions assessing (weekly and daily) relations showed that prior symptoms predicted subsequent symptoms but that prior and concurrent daily stress had no consistent effects. Idiographic correlations also showed little evidence for a relationship between stress and symptoms. Daily stress did not appear to increase GI symptoms in IBS patients on a general basis. Daily recording methodology, in conjunction with within-subject analytic strategies, is proposed as an innovative approach to examine relations between stress and physical symptomatology.  相似文献

Two collaborative studies have been made of the method devized for the determination of N-nitroso compounds as a group, which involves their selective denitrosation with hydrogen bromide in glacial acetic acid, followed by the measurement of the nitric oxide liberated using a chemiluminescence analyzer, such as the TEA. Considerable variation was evident between the results in the first study, most of the values reported being low. This situation undoubtedly arose from the carry-over of traces of hydrogen bromide from one determination to the next, which resulted in premature denitrosation. The precision and consistency of the results were greatly improved in the second study, for which additional precautions had been recommended. All of the six participating laboratories reported reasonably consistent values, the coefficients of variation being 27.9% and 21.1% respectively, at the levels of spiking of N-nitrososarcosine equivalent to 32.9 ng and 146.4 ng of nitric oxide.  相似文献

The human health benefits from consumption of cranberry products have been associated with the fruits' unique flavonoid composition, including a complex profile of anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins. However, when processed by techniques such as pressing, canning, concentrating, or drying, a number of these natural components may be compromised or inactivated due to physical separation, thermal degradation, or oxidation. Fresh cranberries were compared to freeze-dried berries and individual fruit tissues (skin and peeled fruit). Products examined included cranberry juices (commercial and prepared from concentrate), cranberry sauces (commercial and homemade), and sweetened-dried cranberries (commercial). Freeze-drying resulted in no detectable losses of anthocyanins or proanthocyanidins from cranberry fruits. Anthocyanins were localized in the skin. Proanthocyanins were higher in the skin than in the flesh, with the exception of procyanidin A-2 dimer which was concentrated in the flesh. Anthocyanins were significantly higher in not-from-concentrate juice than in reconstituted juice from concentrate (8.3 mg and 4.2 mg/100 mL, respectively). Similarly, proanthocyanidins were markedly higher in not-from-concentrate juice compared to juice from concentrate (23.0 mg and 8.9 mg/100 mL, respectively). Homemade sauce contained far higher anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins (15.9 and 87.9 mg/100 g, respectively) than canned sauces processed with whole berries (9.6 and 54.4 mg/100 g, respectively) or jelled-type (1.1 and 16 mg/100 g, respectively). Sweetened-dried cranberries were quite low in anthocyanins (7.9 mg/100 g), but they still retained considerable proanthocyanidins (64.2 mg/100 g). Commercially processed products contained significantly lower levels of polyphenols as compared to fresh and home-processed preparations. Anthocyanins were more sensitive to degradation than proanthocyanidins. Practical Application: As cranberry juices and other products are increasingly consumed for their recognized health benefits (including prophylaxis against urinary tract infection), it is relevant to consider how various degrees of commercial and home processing can alter innate levels of the biologically active flavonoids (especially anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins) characteristic to the intact fruits.  相似文献

The improvement in processor performance through continuous breakthroughs in transistor technology has resulted in the proliferation of lightweight embedded systems. Advances in wireless technology and embedded systems have enabled remote healthcare and telemedicine. While medical examinations could previously extract only localized symptoms through snapshots, now continuous monitoring can discretely analyze how a patient's lifestyle affects his/her physiological conditions and if additional symptoms occur under various stimuli. We demonstrate how medical applications in particular benefit from a hierarchical networking scheme that will improve the quantity and quality of ubiquitous data collection. Our Telehealth networking infrastructure provides flexibility in terms of functionality and the type of applications that it supports. We specifically present a case study that demonstrates the effectiveness of our networked embedded infrastructure in an in vivo pressure application. Experimental results of the in vivo system demonstrate how it can wirelessly transmit pressure readings measuring from 0 to 1.5 lbf/in2 with an accuracy of 0.02 lbf/in2. The challenges in biocompatible packaging, transducer drift, power management, and in vivo signal transmission are also discussed. This research brings researchers a step closer to continuous, real-time systemic monitoring that will allow one to analyze the dynamic human physiology.  相似文献

During the past twenty years the Domain Name System (DNS) has sustained phenomenal growth while maintaining satisfactory user-level performance. However, the original design focused mainly on system robustness against physical failures, and neglected the impact of operational errors such as mis-configurations. Our measurement efforts have revealed a number of mis-configurations in DNS today: delegation inconsistency, lame delegation, diminished server redundancy, and cyclic zone dependency. Zones with configuration errors suffer from reduced availability and increased query delays up to an order of magnitude. The original DNS design assumed that redundant DNS servers fail independently, but our measurements show that operational choices create dependencies between servers. We found that, left unchecked, DNS configuration errors are widespread. Specifically, lame delegation affects 15% of the measured DNS zones, delegation inconsistency appears in 21% of the zones, diminished server redundancy is even more prevalent, and cyclic dependency appears in 2% of the zones. We also noted that the degrees of mis-configuration vary from zone to zone, with the most popular zones having the lowest percentage of errors. Our results indicate that DNS, as well as any other truly robust large-scale system, must include systematic checking mechanisms to cope with operational errors.  相似文献

The reactions of sodium nitrite, S-nitrosocysteine hydrochloride, S-nitrosoglutathione and a ‘protein-bound nitrite’ model system with N-methylaniline at pH 5.5 and 37°C have been compared. The results show that the rate of nitrosamine formation from sodium nitrite and S-nitrosocysteine is greater than that from the model system although the latter depends upon the local concentration of nitrosothiol groups on the matrix. Transnitrosation by S-nitrosoglutathione is considerably slower than the other reactions. The implications of the results with respect to nitrosamine formation in cured meat are discussed.  相似文献
