A virtual test facility (VTF) for studying the three-dimensional dynamic response of solid materials subject to strong shock and detonation waves has been constructed as part of the research program of the Center for Simulating the Dynamic Response of Materials at the California Institute of Technology. The compressible fluid flow is simulated with a Cartesian finite volume method and treating the solid as an embedded moving body, while a Lagrangian finite element scheme is employed to describe the structural response to the hydrodynamic pressure loading. A temporal splitting method is applied to update the position and velocity of the boundary between time steps. The boundary is represented implicitly in the fluid solver with a level set function that is constructed on-the-fly from the unstructured solid surface mesh. Block-structured mesh adaptation with time step refinement in the fluid allows for the efficient consideration of disparate fluid and solid time scales. We detail the design of the employed object-oriented mesh refinement framework AMROC and outline its effective extension for fluid–structure interaction problems. Further, we describe the parallelization of the most important algorithmic components for distributed memory machines and discuss the applied partitioning strategies. As computational examples for typical VTF applications, we present the dynamic deformation of a tantalum cylinder due to the detonation of an interior solid explosive and the impact of an explosion-induced shock wave on a multi-material soft tissue body.  相似文献

3D Metamorphosis Between Different Types of Geometric Models   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We present a powerful morphing technique based on level set methods, that can be combined with a variety of scan conversion/model processing techniques. Bringing these techniques together creates a general morphing approach that allows a user to morph a number of geometric model types in a single animation. We have developed techniques for converting several types of geometric models (polygonal meshes, CSG models and MRI scans) into distance volumes, the volumetric representation required by our level set morphing approach. The combination of these two capabilities allows a user to create a morphing sequence regardless of the model type of the source and target objects, freeing him/her to use whatever model type is appropriate for a particular animation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were any significant differences in the morphology of the feet of children living on two different continents. The shape and dimensions of the feet of 86 preschool and 419 primary school children from Australia, matched to the same number of German children for age, gender, height and BMI, were compared. The German children display significantly longer and flatter feet relative to their Australian counterparts, whereas the Australian children reveal a significantly smaller ball angle, implying that the forefoot of the Australian children is squarer in shape. These findings imply that footwear must be designed to cater to the unique foot dimensions of children in different continents to ensure that shoe shape matches foot shape. Most footwear companies do not vary the dimensions of their shoe lasts to accommodate intercontinental differences in foot morphology based on racial and/or environmental factors. The results of this study will have immediate implications for the design of comfortable footwear suitable for the developing feet of children.  相似文献

Committed progenitor cells and primitive stem cells mediate early and sustained engraftment, respectively, after lethal irradiation and stem cell transplantation. Peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) from unstimulated mice are deficient in both cell types. To study techniques to mobilize both progenitor cells and primitive stem cells from the marrow to the blood, we collected peripheral blood from C57BL/6 mice 6 to 7 days after a single dose of cyclophosphamide (CY; 200 mg/kg intraperitoneally), after recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) (250 micrograms/kg/d twice per day subcutaneously for 4 days), or after CY followed by G-CSF. Significant increases in white blood cell counts (1.6- to 2.7-fold) and circulating day 8 colony-forming unit spleen (CFU-S) (11- to 36-fold) were seen with all three mobilization methods compared with unstimulated control mice. Transplantation of mobilized blood stem cells into lethally irradiated hosts decreased the time to erythroid engraftment. Blood stem cells were analyzed for primitive stem cell content by Rs, an assay for CFU-S self-renewal, and competitive repopulation index (CRI), an assay of long-term repopulating ability. The primitive stem cell content of unstimulated blood was clearly deficient, but was significantly increased following mobilization, approaching normal bone marrow levels. These results were confirmed by an in vitro limiting dilution long-term culture assay that measures the frequency of progenitor cells and primitive stem cells. Mobilization following CY + G-CSF was accompanied by a marked loss of both progenitor cells and primitive stem cells in the marrow. In contrast, following G-CSF alone the progenitor cell and primitive stem cell content of the marrow was unchanged. Stem cell mobilization following CY + G-CSF was not affected by previous exposure of donors to cytosine arabinoside or cyclophosphamide, but was significantly reduced by previous exposure to busulfan. These data show that stem cell content in the blood may reach near-normal marrow levels after mobilization, the mobilization from the marrow to the blood is temporary and reversible, the specific technique used may mobilize different subpopulations of stem cells, and the type of prior chemotherapy may influence the ability to mobilize stem cells into the blood.  相似文献

The existence of the European integrated electrical network synergistically increases the economies and the service reliability of national subsystems. This fact has an influence on the optimal level of reserve capacity needed in each country. The paper deals with modelling this impact by looking at the case of Switzerland. This is particularly interesting in the European context because of its high proportion of seasonal hydro storage power which complements the predominantly thermal production parks of her neighbouring countries extremely well. The analysis indicates that, thanks to network integration, optimal reserve capacity in Switzerland is lower by some 400—800 MW (3 to 6% of total installed capacity).  相似文献

Scleroderma is characterized by an excessive deposition of collagen in all involved organs. This is due to an overproduction of extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules following induction of gene expression, whereas there is no evidence that the composition of the connective tissue matrix is altered. Several in vivo studies and in vitro experiments suggest that a close interaction between inflammatory cells and fibroblasts is required for the initial activation of fibroblasts. TGF-beta presumably plays an important role, but other cytokines, e.g., PDGF or FGF, may also be involved. Many of the ECM molecules have been shown to interact closely with fibroblasts and provide signals that regulate fibroblast metabolism. The cellular response towards those signals is a further aspect of fibrosis that has attracted attention during recent years. The altered expression of receptor proteins on the cell surface of scleroderma fibroblasts for example might explain in part the lack of down-regulation of collagen synthesis in late phases of the disease. This review summarizes the alterations of connective tissue in scleroderma, and discusses the role of cytokines as well as the ECM for the regulation of fibroblast function and their implication for the development of fibrosis.  相似文献

RASI-1 is a novel matrix metalloproteinase which we isolated from an expression cDNA library representing the mRNA of an inflamed synovium obtained from a patient with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). To investigate the involvement of RASI-1 in the pathology of RA, we examined synovial specimens from RA patients with antibodies directed against an unique RASI-1-derived peptide. In comparison to interstitial collagenase, gelatinase A and B, and stromelysin 1, the RASI-1 expression in the RA-synovium is located mainly in the tunica media of blood vessel walls and its synovial localization is not as ubiquitous as that of other MMPs. The tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP-1), although also widely expressed in the synovium, exhibits strong colocalization with RASI-1 in blood vessel walls. While RASI-1 is expressed in blood vessels of the inflamed synovium of an RA patient, its expression was not found in control synovial specimens from patients with luxation and arthrosis. However, RASI-1 expression can also be found in non-inflamed blood vessels of uterine ligaments and skin. RASI-1, although its function and substrates are unknown, could be involved in processes such as neovascularization and angiogenesis or lymphocyte extravasation and thus may participate in joint tissue destruction during RA.  相似文献

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) are autoantibodies mainly directed against alpha granules' components (especially proteinase 3 (PR 3) and myeloperoxidase (MPO). They are usually detected by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) giving essentially two staining patterns, cytoplasmic and perinuclear. Nevertheless the IIF method does not allow to precise the true specificity of ANCA. From now on a better classification of systemic vasculitis requires such a determination. This can be done only by solid phase tests that require to be reliable, highly purified antigen, and, from a practical point of view, only a MPO-ELISA is currently available. We report on our experience with Western blot analysis of 67 IIF-ANCA positive sera. Using Western blot analysis to characterize ANCA specificity is not so easy as in the case of antibodies directed against extractable nuclear antigens: only PR 3 ANCA detection could be done reproducibly. PR 3 ANCA are mainly detected in the c-ACPN positive sera of patients with Wegener's granylomatosis. Nevertheless using both MPO-ELISA and PR 3 blot seems to increase the frequency of serum containing the two types of ANCA (anti PR 3 and anti MPO).  相似文献
