Platinum—A thermal expansion reference material

Platinum has a face-centered cubic crystal structure and does not have any phase changes between absolute zero and its melting point at 2045 K. High-purity platinum can be readily obtained in rod and sheet form and thus provides an excellent thermal expansion standard. Thinking about Antarctic Heritage: kaleidoscopes and filters

The preliminary results of a project that is currently investigating the nature and range of meanings of Antarctic heritage are explored. The project involves two visits to Scott Base, and the subjects of the qualitative research are the members of the New Zealand Antarctic community. Work so far suggests that different meanings do exist, and a four-fold typology of meanings is suggested which needs to be considered in decisions affecting the future of Antarctica.     

An active-architecture approach to COTS integration

COTS software products are increasingly becoming standard components for building integrated information systems. At the same time, the growth of electronic trading, turbulent market conditions, and a project-style approach to business have created a demand for information systems that can be rapidly adapted to changing business process demands. However, the ongoing development of COTS products is unpredictable as their developers and source code are rarely available. Flexible information systems use COTS components because they cost-effectively supply required component functionality. A software architecture can capture a system design as a set of interacting components and capture the role of COTS software in "implementing" certain components.     

Effect of lactobacilli inoculation on cassava (Manihot esculenta) silage: Fermentation pattern and kinetic analysis

The major effect of Lactobacillus inoculation on laboratory cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) silage was a change from a heterofermentative pattern observed in natural silage to a homofermentation. Small amounts of starter culture (1% v/w) were required to produce a high level of lactic acid (> 28 g kg^?1 DM) and to reach a pH of at least 4. The Gompertz model was used to evaluate the effect of inoculation level on the lactic formation based on kinetic criteria. Also an empirical pH lactic acid correlation was proposed to monitor the progress of ensiling, based solely on pH measurements. The simulation model may be used to improve guidelines for silo safety and to evaluate the effect of lactobacilli inoculants.     

An electron spectrum and profile monitor for the UK free electron laser

A versatile electron spectrum monitor has been developed for the UK free electron laser project. The monitor uses secondary emission from 96 tungsten foils and microprocessor-controlled sampling electronics to produce a high-resolution electron energy spectrum. A 30-channel prototype is currently operating as a beam profile monitor and has been extensively used in emittance measurements at the Kelvin Laboratory linac.     

Millimeter-Wave Profiled Corrugated Horns for the Quad Cosmic Background Polarization Experiment

In this paper we report on the design and validation process for the profiled corrugated horn antennas, which feed the bolometer array of a cosmology experiment known as QUaD located at the South Pole. This is a cosmic background radiation polarization project, which demands precise knowledge and control of the optical coupling to the signal in order to map the feeble E- and B-polarization mode structure. The system will operate in two millimeter wavelength bands at 100 and 150 GHz. The imaging horn array collects the incoming signal via on-axis front-end optics and a Cassegrain telescope, with a cold stop in front of the array to terminate side-lobe structure at an edge taper of ?20dB. The corrugated horn design process was undertaken using in-house analytical software tools, based on modal scattering, specially developed for millimeter -wave profiled horn antennas. An important part of the instrument development was the validation of the horn design, in particular to verify low edge taper levels and the required well-defined band edges. Suitable feed horn designs were measured and were found to be in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions.     

Concave utility, transaction costs, and risk in measuring discounting of delayed rewards.

Research has consistently found that the decline in the present values of delayed rewards as delay increases is better fit by hyperbolic than by exponential delay-discounting functions. However, concave utility, transaction costs, and risk each could produce hyperbolic-looking data, even when the underlying discounting function is exponential. In Experiments 1 (N=45) and 2 (N=103), participants placed bids indicating their present values of real future monetary rewards in computer-based 2nd-price auctions. Both experiments suggest that utility is not sufficiently concave to account for the superior fit of hyperbolic functions. Experiment 2 provided no evidence that the effects of transaction costs and risk are large enough to account for the superior fit of hyperbolic functions.
