Wetlands, which occupy a considerable proportion of Malawi, are an important resource for the rural-poor. In regions of low and erratic rainfall, they provide important opportunities for agriculture and fisheries and are often vital for food security. However, overutilization and some farming practices can result in environmental degradation and the loss of valuable ecosystem services. The Lake Chilwa wetland, a complex aquatic ecosystem comprising a shallow open water lake surrounded by marsh and floodplain grassland, is one of the most important wetlands in Malawi. Most of the 1 million people who live in the vicinity of the lake derive their livelihoods from the wetland. Increases in population in recent decades have increased the pressures on the wetland. In light of continued population growth, it is anticipated that some levels of resource use may be difficult to sustain in the long-term. Consequently, planning the use of wetland resources is a priority if the diverse benefits that local communities presently receive are to be sustained. Baseline wetland information is needed to determine appropriate sustainable management plans, as well as to identify limits to resilience. However, for many wetlands in southern and eastern Africa, these data are lacking, or not available to those who need them. This paper provides an overview of the distribution and characteristics of wetlands in Malawi. Using Lake Chilwa as an example, it illustrates how Earth Observation data, in combination with hydrometric and botanical data, can be used to provide information crucial for sustainable wetland management.  相似文献

We present an energy-based model that uses a product of generalized Student-t distributions to capture the statistical structure in data sets. This model is inspired by and particularly applicable to "natural" data sets such as images. We begin by providing the mathematical framework, where we discuss complete and overcomplete models and provide algorithms for training these models from data. Using patches of natural scenes, we demonstrate that our approach represents a viable alternative to independent component analysis as an interpretive model of biological visual systems. Although the two approaches are similar in flavor, there are also important differences, particularly when the representations are overcomplete. By constraining the interactions within our model, we are also able to study the topographic organization of Gabor-like receptive fields that our model learns. Finally, we discuss the relation of our new approach to previous work--in particular, gaussian scale mixture models and variants of independent components analysis.  相似文献

Edge Transformations for Improving Mesh Quality of Marching Cubes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Marching Cubes is a popular choice for isosurface extraction from regular grids due to its simplicity, robustness, and efficiency. One of the key shortcomings of this approach is the quality of the resulting meshes, which tend to have many poorly shaped and degenerate triangles. This issue is often addressed through post processing operations such as smoothing. As we demonstrate in experiments with several datasets, while these improve the mesh, they do not remove all degeneracies, and incur an increased and unbounded error between the resulting mesh and the original isosurface. Rather than modifying the resulting mesh, we propose a method to modify the grid on which Marching Cubes operates. This modification greatly increases the quality of the extracted mesh. In our experiments, our method did not create a single degenerate triangle, unlike any other method we experimented with. Our method incurs minimal computational overhead, requiring at most twice the execution time of the original Marching Cubes algorithm in our experiments. Most importantly, it can be readily integrated in existing Marching Cubes implementations, and is orthogonal to many Marching Cubes enhancements (particularly, performance enhancements such as out-of-core and acceleration structures).  相似文献

We present a new approach to shape-based segmentation and tracking of deformable anatomical structures in medical images, and validate this approach by detecting and tracking the endocardial contour in an echocardiographic image sequence. To this end, some global prior shape knowledge of the endocardial boundary is captured by a prototype template with a set of predefined global and local deformations to take into account its inherent natural variability over time. In this deformable model-based Bayesian segmentation, the data likelihood model relies on an accurate statistical modelling of the grey level distribution of each class present in the ultrasound image. The parameters of this distribution mixture are given by a preliminary iterative estimation step. This estimation scheme relies on a Markov Random Field prior model, and takes into account the imaging process as well as the distribution shape of each class present in the image. Then the detection and the tracking problem is stated in a Bayesian framework, where it ends up as a cost function minimisation problem for each image of the sequence. In our application, this energy optimisation problem is efficiently solved by a genetic algorithm combined with a steepest ascent procedure. This technique has been successfully applied on synthetic images, and on a real echocardiographic image sequence.  相似文献

Syndesmotic sutures of the skull are formed by dense connective tissue and called "open"; they are "closed" by formation of a synostosis between adjacent bones. Open sutures are considered as areas of growth and as hinges. The importance of open sutures during the period of skull growth is reflected by pathological situations in which premature closure of the sutures occurs. As alterations of the FGF receptor have been reported in genetical disorders accompanied by premature suture closure (Bellus et al. 1996), the role of fibroblasts and connective tissue in the development of the sagittal suture of mice has been investigated by light and electron microscopy. Morphological changes of the sagittal suture at the following stages are reported: at embryonic day 18, days 1, 5, 9, 14, 20, 26, 28 after birth and in adult mice. Two skulls per stage were investigated. Early osteogenesis appeared in a thin plate, followed by a second plate underneath the first one. Both were separated by blood vessels. In general, vascularization preceded desmoid mineralization; the space around blood vessels was occupied by non-bone-forming cells leaving cavities for the presumptive bone marrow. Mineralization of the collagen-rich osteoid at the mineralizing rim of the bone plates was accompanied by apoptoses and cell disintegration. Newly formed bone was immediately covered by osteoblasts forming a sheet of bone-lining cells. At day 9, the double-layered bone plates of both sides reached the median area of the skull but were separated by non-mineralizing, collagen-rich connective tissue. From day 14 onwards, the bone plates thickened. Bone apposition, recognizable by the formation of collagen-rich osteoid and proceeding from day 14 pp onwards, occurred mainly at the outer and inner surfaces of the calvariae, but neither at bone marrow surfaces nor at the medial edges of the parietal bones. These opposite bone faces showed fewer osteoblasts and bone-lining cells, but an increased number of fibroblasts. Tendon-like collagen bundles connected both bone plates of the open suture of day 26 pp as well as in the adult mice, whereby synostotically closed areas alternated. Formation of an open, syndesmotic suture can, therefore, be described as a transition of bone-forming tissue into a bone-tendon junction. The results indicate the importance of the replacement of osteoblasts by fibroblasts at the sutural front of the bone plates in order to prevent a premature suture closure.  相似文献

CONTEXT: Peripheral neuropathy is common in persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) but few data on symptomatic treatment are available. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a standardized acupuncture regimen (SAR) and amitriptyline hydrochloride for the relief of pain due to HIV-related peripheral neuropathy in HIV-infected patients. DESIGN: Randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter clinical trial. Each site enrolled patients into 1 of the following 3 options: (1) a modified double-blind 2 x 2 factorial design of SAR, amitriptyline, or the combination compared with placebo, (2) a modified double-blind design of an SAR vs control points, or (3) a double-blind design of amitriptyline vs placebo. SETTING: Terry Beirn Community Programs for Clinical Research on AIDS (HIV primary care providers) in 10 US cities. PATIENTS: Patients with HIV-associated, symptomatic, lower-extremity peripheral neuropathy. Of 250 patients enrolled, 239 were in the acupuncture comparison (125 in the factorial option and 114 in the SAR option vs control points option), and 136 patients were in the amitriptyline comparison (125 in the factorial option and 11 in amitriptyline option vs placebo option). INTERVENTIONS: Standardized acupuncture regimen vs control points, amitriptyline (75 mg/d) vs placebo, or both for 14 weeks. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Changes in mean pain scores at 6 and 14 weeks, using a pain scale ranging from 0.0 (no pain) to 1.75 (extremely intense), recorded daily. RESULTS: Patients in all 4 groups showed reduction in mean pain scores at 6 and 14 weeks compared with baseline values. For both the acupuncture and amitriptyline comparisons, changes in pain score were not significantly different between the 2 groups. At 6 weeks, the estimated difference in pain reduction for patients in the SAR group compared with those in the control points group (a negative value indicates a greater reduction for the "active" treatment) was 0.01 (95% confidence interval [CI], -0.11 to 0.12; P=.88) and for patients in the amitriptyline group vs those in the placebo group was -0.07 (95% CI, -0.22 to 0.08; P=.38). At 14 weeks, the difference for those in the SAR group compared with those in the control points group was -0.08 (95% CI, -0.21 to 0.06; P=.26) and for amitriptyline compared with placebo was 0.00 (95% CI, -0.18 to 0.19; P=.99). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, neither acupuncture nor amitriptyline was more effective than placebo in relieving pain caused by HIV-related peripheral neuropathy.  相似文献

Dyskinesias commonly appear during L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) therapy of advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) and can occur in both dose-related and dose-independent patterns. Clozapine exerts a dose-related suppression of L-DOPA-induced dyskinesias by shifting the i.v. L-DOPA dose-response curve for production of dyskinesias without altering relief of parkinsonism. We report our outpatient experience with 13 patients on daily clozapine therapy (maximum dose 400 mg/day), followed for 3-21 months (median 10). Beneficial effects of clozapine, determined from twice-weekly diaries, included increased "on time" and decreased "off time" and time "on with dyskinesia." Improvements were statistically apparent by 75 mg/day and remained so through 200 mg/day. Sedation was a common problem, reflected by increased time "asleep" which was significant by 50 mg/day. Sedation was dose limiting in most patients. Orthostatic hypotension and sialorrhea were variably present. No patients had seizures, bone marrow toxicity, or detectable loss of efficacy of clozapine with chronic use. We conclude that clozapine is an effective agent for suppression of dyskinesias in PD with an effective daily dose for most patients of 100-200 mg/day.  相似文献

The enantiomeric distribution of 3-mercaptohexanol (1) and 3-methylthiohexanol (2) in yellow and purple passion fruits was determined by capillary gas chromatography (GC) using two different chiral stationary phases and a flame photometric detector. The results were confirmed by enantioselective capillary GC combined with mass spectrometric detection.1 shows an enrichment of the (S)-enantiomer, but the enantiomeric purity varies in a wide range. Irrespective from the enantiomeric distribution of1, 2 was detected with high enantiomeric purity in favour of the (S)-enantiomer. Tunable dynamic networks of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are utilized to prepare high-performance polymer gel electrolytes. By swelling an anisotropically dewatered, but never dried, CNF gel in acidic salt solutions, a highly sparse network is constructed with a fraction of CNFs as low as 0.9%, taking advantage of the very high aspect ratio and the ultra-thin thickness of the CNFs (micrometers long and 2–4 nm thick). These CNF networks expose high interfacial areas and can accommodate massive amounts of the ionic conductive liquid polyethylene glycol-based electrolyte into strong homogeneous gel electrolytes. In addition to the reinforced mechanical properties, the presence of the CNFs simultaneously enhances the ionic conductivity due to their excellent strong water-binding capacity according to computational simulations. This strategy renders the electrolyte a room-temperature ionic conductivity of 0.61 ± 0.12 mS cm−1 which is one of the highest among polymer gel electrolytes. The electrolyte shows superior performances as a separator for lithium iron phosphate half-cells in high specific capacity (161 mAh g−1 at 0.1C), excellent rate capability (5C), and cycling stability (94% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 1C) at 60 °C, as well as stable room temperature cycling performance and considerably improved safety compared with commercial liquid electrolyte systems.  相似文献

Dielectric ceramics are fundamental for electronic systems, including energy storages, microwave applications, ultrasonics, and sensors. Relaxor ferroelectrics show superb performance among dielectrics due to their high efficiency and energy density by the nature of nanodomains. Here, a novel non-perovskite relaxor ferroelectric, Bi6Ti5WO22, with ultralow loss, ≈10−3, highly tunable permittivity, ≈2200 at room temperature with 40% tunability and the superparaelectric region at room temperature is presented. The actual crystal structure and the nanodomains of Bi6Ti5WO22 are demonstrat Various-temperature neutron powder diffraction and in situ high-resolution transmission-electron-microscopy illustrate the twinning effect, subtle structure change and micro-strain in the material influenced by temperature, manifesting the actual crystal structure of Bi6Ti5WO22. Compared with dielectric loss of BaTiO3-based dielectric tunable materials, the loss of Bi6Ti5WO22 is more than an order of magnitude lower, which makes it exhibit a figure of merit (≈240), much higher than that of conventional dielectric tunable materials (< 100), endorse the material great potential for direct applications. The present research offers a strategy for discovering novel relaxor ferroelectrics and a highly desirable material for fabricating energy storage capacitors, microwave dielectrics, and ultrasonics.  相似文献
