Barr body distribution and estrogen receptor protein in mammary carcinoma

The study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between Barr body distribution and estrogen receptor protein content of mammary carcinoma. The proportion of cells with one or more Barr body was determined in 105 specimens of mammary carcinoma from Guard stained imprints. Receptor protein content of the specimen was measured by the dextran charcoal method and compared with histopathologic features of the carcinomas. Primary carcinomas with Barr bodies in more than 10 percent of tumor cells were more likely to have higher levels of receptor protein than those with a lower proportion of Barr body containing cells (P less than 0.005). The results obtained for primary carcinoma may explain why patients with carcinomas that have a high proportion of Barr body positive cells are more likely to respond to hormonal therapy. Furthermore, these observations, when correlated with other available data about ERP suggest that an X-chromosome is involved in the synthesis of and/or carries the locus of action for estrogen receptor protein.

Field research like that of A. L. Turner (see record 2000-03669-001) has the potential to develop theory about coping and treatment processes. We discuss theoretical concepts from social support research, social comparison theory, and emotional processing models, which can help to understand what is happening in group-based interventions and to plan interventions that address the interface between socially supportive processes and individual differences in anxiety reactions. We discuss methodological approaches that can be used to assess how treatment effects are mediated and suggest settings where controlled evaluations are possible. Two-dimensional relativistic longitudinal Green's function in the presence of a moving planar dielectric-magnetic discontinuity

The current contribution is concerned with obtaining the relativistic two-dimensional (three-dimensional in relativity jargon) Green's function of a time-harmonic line current that is embedded in a moving dielectric-magnetic medium with a planar discontinuity. By applying a plane-wave (PW) spectral representation for the relativistic electromagnetic Green's function of a dielectric-magnetic medium that is moving in a uniform velocity, the exact reflected and transmitted (refracted) fields are obtained in the form of a spectral integral over PWs in the so-called laboratory and comoving frames. We investigate these spectral representations, as well as their asymptotic evaluations, and discuss the associated relativistic wave phenomena of direct reflected/transmitted rays and relativistic head waves (lateral waves).     

An equation of turbulent motion in tubes

An equation of turbulent motion in a round cylindrical channel, which involves no empirical quantities, is proposed for the first time. A solution of this equation describes the average velocity profile in all regions of the channel cross section in the entire range of turbulent Reynolds numbers. The computational model is based on taking into account the internal distributed resistance created by a turbulent “vortex backfill.”     

Identification of nutritious vegetable oils by their triglyceride composition

Three criteria have been suggested for the identification of food vegetable oils: the ratio of the summary area of triglyceride peaks and the summary area of the reference peaks; a set of peaks of critical pairs of oil triglycerides and their relationship expressed as the percent of the maximum peak. To prove the correctness of the identification a previously known oil is analyzed and its characteristics are compared to those of the oil under study. A mixture of saturated triglycerides with equivalent carbon numbers 30-56 is used as a reference one. A total of 16 vegetable oils have been identified with the use of the method suggested.
