In this article, new and innovative methods for bedload transport monitoring and their application in the context of a restoration project on the Danube River are described. Using an adapted basket sampler, a first comprehensive monitoring campaign for measuring bedload transport on the Danube was conducted and the temporal and spatial variability was shown. The development of a methodology for tracing artificial pebbles made it possible to track 40 pebble tracers of three different sizes on the Danube over the course of an entire year. Combining the two methods it could be determined that bedload already moves at low flow conditions and that bedload transport only increases slightly or even remains constant after reaching bank-full discharge. The tracer study identified size-selective transport ?C larger sizes were moving less often and over shorter distances than smaller sizes ?C with a mean transport distance of 3?km per year for the current bed material at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. Detailed bathymetry and the analysis of the layer succession of the riverbed using the Freeze Core methodology complemented the other insights into the processes of sediment transport on the Danube River. These methods successfully characterized gravel sheets and allowed us to make predictive statements about bed armoring. Managers and researchers have identified a reproducing population of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) in the western basin of Lake Erie, generating concern over the potential threat to ecosystem function in the Great Lakes Basin. Capture histories indicate that grass carp may be present at low levels in other areas of Lake Erie, necessitating a large scale, multi-jurisdictional response. As a result, a group of experts and decision makers began a structured decision making exercise to collaboratively address the threat and identify potential response actions. To aid this process, we developed a spatially-explicit periodic matrix population model to project grass carp abundance, and probabilistically evaluate specific management actions. We evaluated four potential management response actions ranging from no action, diffuse removal efforts, and concentrated removal efforts with and without a barrier on the Sandusky River to reduce spawning success. Based on our current knowledge, concentrated removal including a barrier on the Sandusky River provides the most likely path to achieving and maintaining a management target of no more than 10 fish/ha. Our understanding of grass carp ecology in Lake Erie is growing. This model and parameter development methods were designed to flexibly accommodate new information as our understanding of grass carp ecology evolves, or management objectives change. Ultimately, this modeling framework and use of Bayesian methods could facilitate management response efforts for other invasive species occurring over large scales and multiple jurisdictions. 相似文献

The St. Clair-Detroit River System contains a world-class Great Lakes muskellunge (Esox masquinongy) fishery that has avoided the declines observed in many Great Lakes muskellunge populations. Muskellunge are an upper trophic level predator, and therefore a naturally low-density species. Limited fishery-independent data exist on which to base management decisions. To remedy this, we initiated an acoustic telemetry study in May of 2016, in collaboration with the Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System. Our objective was to describe patterns of movement of muskellunge in this large and open system to better understand their spatial ecology. We acoustically tagged 133 muskellunge in the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair, and movements of 58 fish that passed our data quality control screens were analyzed. We utilized mixed modelling to assess the effects of sex, length, release location, and season on daily movement rates. We found that movement rates only differed among seasons, with highest movement rates occurring in the fall and lowest movement rates in the winter. Muskellunge tagged at different locations exhibited distinct residency patterns, and fish frequently crossed jurisdictional and waterbody boundaries. Ultimately our study highlights the scope and patterns of muskellunge movement in a large, unimpounded system and demonstrates that management of these fish would benefit from consideration of their full distribution covering multiple management jurisdictions. 相似文献

Large lakes have an impact on regional weather. In addition, they can be both sensitive to and influence regional climate changes. In the climate models that are used to investigate future climate changes, lakes are greatly simplified and sometimes absent. At the regional scale, this can have strong implications for the quality of the model information about the future. Through our work with climate information users in the Laurentian Great Lakes region, we have found that basic credibility of the information requires the underlying climate models simulate lake-atmosphere-land interactions. We are not aware of efforts within the scientific community to make known how individual large lakes are represented in models and how those representations translate to the quality of the data for particular regions. We share our framework for identifying how the Laurentian Great Lakes are represented in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) version 5 climate models. We found that most CMIP5 models do not simulate the Great Lakes in a way that captures their impact on the regional climate, which is a credibility issue for their projections. We provide a perspective on the usability of CMIP5 for practitioners in the Great Lakes region and offer recommendations for alternative options. 相似文献

Understanding variation in fish populations is valuable from both a management and an ecological perspective. Great Lakes sea lampreys are controlled primarily by treating tributaries with lampricides that target the larval stage. Great Lakes streams were divided into four categories based on their regularity of parasitic lamprey production inferred from the historic regularity of chemical treatments. This categorization was intended to direct future assessment efforts, but may also reflect differences in early demographics. We analyzed assessment data collected from 1959 to 2005 using mixed-effects models and variance components analyses to test for differences in recruitment and growth to age 1 among stream categories. Recruitment was twice as large in regularly treated streams as in irregularly treated streams, indicating that age-1 year-class strength is correlated with consistent chemical treatments. We found no differences in length at age 1 among stream categories; however, Lake Superior streams with irregular treatment histories exhibit more variation in length at age 1 than streams that are treated regularly. The majority of variation in length at age 1 was due to within-year variation, which was fairly consistent across stream types within each lake. Our results indicate that early life history differs among subsets of the Great Lakes sea lamprey population, and management practices should be modified to account for these differences. Mixed-effects models and variance components analyses are useful tools for analyzing large historical datasets for patterns of demographic variation within and among populations, whether the ultimate goal is pest control, harvesting, or conservation. 相似文献

Long‐term monitoring of the food web of a regulated hydropeaking river was conducted to assess if previously documented effects of changing ramping rates (RRs) were maintained with the addition of 6 years of data. Using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses, we hypothesized that: (1) macroinvertebrates and fish inhabiting areas below peaking hydrodams would be higher in δ15N and lower in δ13C due to increased flow velocity and the influence of light respired dissolved inorganic carbon, relative to those sampled from areas with a natural flow regime; (2) the increase in δ15N of macroinvertebrates would lead a shorter food web length in the regulated river, but δ13C and niche width would be similar between the restricted and unrestricted RR periods (i.e., the BACI analysis); and (3) isotopic metrics (e.g., δ13C, δ15N, niche width [SEAB], and food chain length [Δ15N]) would correlate with variations in flow characteristics through time. Consistent with previous analysis conducted over a shorter time period, a shift toward higher δ15N values was observed for both fish and invertebrates, but, contrarily, only invertebrates (not fish) had a lower δ13C value downstream of the dam. Over the long term, the before‐after‐control‐impact analysis found no effect of RRs on any of the food web metrics, implying that the change in operation did not affect the river food web. However, analysis of the time series data indicated that flow metrics and trophic metrics were often correlated, including a negative effect of RR (invertebrates) and discharge (fish) on food chain length. This study illustrates the difficulty in detecting changes in food web structure and function under changing flow regime influenced by natural and anthropogenic effects. As such, this study highlights the need for considering large spatial and temporal scales to differentiate between confounding effects of climate, natural variability, and altered flow regimes on food webs in regulated rivers. 相似文献

The ability of decanoic (C10), dodecanoic (C12) and tetradecanoic (C14) acids to restrict the fermentation of ryegrass and lucerne was investigated with laboratory silos. With ryegrass, addition of the C12 acid alone at 1 kg t?1 of fresh crop had no effect on extent or pattern of fermentation compared to that of the untreated crop, though at 2 kg t?1 the acid appeared to reduce the content of butyric acid but not ammonia-N in the silage. Formic acid, added alone or with C10, C12 and C14 acids restricted extent of fermentation and butyric acid production, but in this experiment addition of these acids had relatively little effect on the content of ammonia-N in the silages. With lucerne, extent of fermentation was similar for all treatments, though the untreated silage and those which received C12 or formic acid alone at 1 kg t?1 or 1 kg t?1 of C14 acid with 1 kg t?1 of formic acid contained butyric acid in excess of 3% of the dry matter (DM). It is concluded that acids in the range C12-C14 are not effective in restricting silage fermentation and that their effectiveness is not increased by reduction in pH produced by the addition of formic acid. The carrot, Daucus carota, is a commonly used vegetable which has changed in appearance due to plant breeding programmes. The development of the carrot can be divided into a period of rapid increase in fresh weight, a stage of constant fresh weight and a stage of floral development and decrease in fresh weight. An analysis of the dietary fibre content of the carrot and its chemical composition has been made, using the varieties Altrincham, Chantenay, Nantes and Scarlet Perfection, at different developmental stages. Fibre was measured as prepared fibre, NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin. No differences were found between varieties except those due to the different developmental rates of each variety. Within each variety the ADF content increased during late stage 2 and the increase was apparently due to the cellulose component of the ADF. Despite the differences, however, in carrot fresh weight between varieties and also within each variety there is no difference in any fibre component of carrot per 100 g fresh weight. 相似文献

The hydrated calcium aluminate AFt and AFm phases are known hosts for a wide variety of chemical species. This characteristic is beneficial to those using portland cement to solidify/encapsulate radioactive waste which more often than not contains a wide variety of elements. In order to investigate the potential of the calcium aluminate hydrates as host phases for selected ions, the following experiments were carried out. Bottle hydration studies (water/solid > 1) were used to investigate the suitability of the AFt and AFm phases as hosts for iodine, one of the more mobile radioactive waste elements. Trial compositions along the AFt and AFm joins in the systems 3CaO·Al2O3---CaSO4---CaI2---H2O were investigated. No stable iodine end-member AFt phase was formed at room temperature. The end-member AFm phase, 3CaO·Al2O3·CaI2·12H2O, was synthesized and was designated monoiodide. Characterization was carried out using chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction (conventional and high temperature), thermogravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis. Monoiodide was indexed as hexagonal and thus isostructural with previously described AFm phases. Monoiodide is stable to about 85°C. A loss of approximately four molecules of water occurs between 71° and 101°C. The lower hydrate, tentatively identified as 3CaO·Al2O3·CaI2·8H2O, is stable to approximately 300°C. The latter hydrate was observed to revert to the original hydrate on exposure to the relative humidity in the laboratory. 相似文献

Sorption isotherms for carbon dioxide in poly(ethylene terephthalate) have been measured at 35–55°C. The isotherms were measured gravimetrically on a Mettler Thermoanalyzer-1 from vacuum to 1 atmosphere. The sorption data were used to generate sorption isotherms from which the isosteric heat of sorption of CO2 in PET was determined. At 45°C the isosteric heat of sorption increases from −10 kcal/mole at a concentration of 0.5 cm3 (STP)/cm3 (polymer) to −8 kcal mole−1 at a concentration of 1.5 cm3 (STP)/cm3 (polymer). It has been reported in the literature that the isosteric heat of sorption for this system decreased through a minimum before increasing with increasing concentration. Our measurement of the low-pressure sorption isotherms shows that this is not the case. 相似文献
