An important parameter in normalizing activities of porous electrocatalysts is real surface area of the catalyst. In this study CO stripping voltammetry was applied for the determination of the surface area of PtRu catalysts in a membrane electrode assembly. The difficulties in applying this method are summarized and a practical solution for the “accurate” voltammetric CO charge determination is suggested. The influence of adsorption time, potential, sweeping range and sweep rate on voltammetric CO charge determination is studied. It is shown that the CO charge determined in this way is independent on the sweep rate applied. 相似文献

This review article explores the telocytes’ roles in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), presenting the mechanisms and hypotheses related to epithelial regeneration, progressive fibrosis, and dysmotility as a consequence of TCs’ reduced or absent number. Based on the presented mechanisms and hypotheses, we aim to provide a functional model to illustrate TCs’ possible roles in the normal and pathological functioning of the digestive tract. TCs are influenced by the compression of nearby blood vessels and the degree of fibrosis of the surrounding tissues and mediate these processes in response. The changes in intestinal tube vascularization induced by the movement of the food bowl, and the consequent pH changes that show an anisotropy in the thickness of the intestinal tube wall, have led to the identification of a pattern of intestinal tube development based on telocytes’ ability to communicate and modulate surrounding cell functions. In the construction of the theoretical model, given the predictable occurrence of colic in the infant, the two-layer arrangement of the nerve plexuses associated with the intestinal tube was considered to be incompletely adapted to the motility required with a diversified diet. There is resulting evidence of possible therapeutic targets for diseases associated with changes in local nerve tissue development. 相似文献

Millions of people worldwide are diagnosed with retinal dystrophies such as retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. A retinal prosthesis using organic photovoltaic (OPV) semiconductors is a promising therapeutic device to restore vision to patients at the late onset of the disease. However, an appropriate cytotoxicity approach has to be employed on the OPV materials before using them as retinal implants. In this study, we followed ISO standards to assess the cytotoxicity of D18, Y6, PFN-Br and PDIN individually, and as mixtures of D18/Y6, D18/Y6/PFN-Br and D18/Y6/PDIN. These materials were proven for their high performance as organic solar cells. Human RPE cells were put in direct and indirect contact with these materials to analyze their cytotoxicity by the MTT assay, apoptosis by flow cytometry, and measurements of cell morphology and proliferation by immunofluorescence. We also assessed electrophysiological recordings on mouse retinal explants via microelectrode arrays (MEAs) coated with D18/Y6. In contrast to PFN-Br and PDIN, all in vitro experiments show no cytotoxicity of D18 and Y6 alone or as a D18/Y6 mixture. We conclude that D18/Y6 is safe to be subsequently investigated as a retinal prosthesis. 相似文献

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), one of the most common endocrine pathologies during pregnancy, is defined as any degree of glucose intolerance with onset or first discovery in the perinatal period. Physiological changes that occur in pregnant women can lead to inflammation, which promotes insulin resistance. In the general context of worldwide increasing obesity in young females of reproductive age, GDM follows the same ascending trend. Changes in the intestinal microbiome play a decisive role in obesity and the development of insulin resistance and chronic inflammation, especially in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). To date, various studies have also associated intestinal dysbiosis with metabolic changes in women with GDM. Although host metabolism in women with GDM has not been fully elucidated, it is of particular importance to analyze the available data and to discuss the actual knowledge regarding microbiome changes with potential impact on the health of pregnant women and newborns. We analyzed peer-reviewed journal articles available in online databases in order to summarize the most recent findings regarding how variations in diet and metabolic status of GDM patients can contribute to alteration of the gut microbiome, in the same way that changes of the gut microbiota can lead to GDM. The most frequently observed alteration in the microbiome of patients with GDM was either an increase of the Firmicutes phylum, respectively, or a decrease of the Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria phyla. Gut dysbiosis was still present postpartum and can impact the development of the newborn, as shown in several studies. In the evolution of GDM, probiotic supplementation and regular physical activity have the strongest evidence of proper blood glucose control, favoring fetal development and a healthy outcome for the postpartum period. The current review aims to summarize and discuss the most recent findings regarding the correlation between GDM and dysbiosis, and current and future methods for prevention and treatment (lifestyle changes, pre- and probiotics administration). To conclude, by highlighting the role of the gut microbiota, one can change perspectives about the development and progression of GDM and open up new avenues for the development of innovative therapeutic targets in this disease. 相似文献

Spine tumors represent a significant social and medical problem, affecting the quality of life of thousands of patients and imposing a burden on healthcare systems worldwide. Encompassing a wide range of diseases, spine tumors require prompt multidisciplinary treatment strategies, being mainly approached through chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgical interventions, either alone or in various combinations. However, these conventional tactics exhibit a series of drawbacks (e.g., multidrug resistance, tumor recurrence, systemic adverse effects, invasiveness, formation of large bone defects) which limit their application and efficacy. Therefore, recent research focused on finding better treatment alternatives by utilizing modern technologies to overcome the challenges associated with conventional treatments. Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a unique microbial biopolymer with a huge number of significant applications in the biomedical field, including bone tissue engineering. The present study proposes to obtain and characterize BC hybrid composites with calcium phosphate as biocompatible and bioactive membranes for bone tissue engineering. BC precursor membranes were obtained in static culture fermentation, and after purification, were oxidized to obtain 2,3-dialdehyde bacterial cellulose (DABC). Calcium phosphate-BC oxidized membranes were produced by successive immersion in precursor solutions under ultrasonic irradiation. The samples were characterized for their physicochemical properties using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GI-XRD), solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (CP/MAS 13C NMR), and complex thermal analysis. In vitro cell studies were also performed to evaluate the influence of modified morphological characteristics on cell adhesion and proliferation. The results showed an increase in porosity and biodegradability for DABC hybrid composites compared with BC. In vitro cell studies have revealed that both hybrid composites favor cell adhesion to the surface. The new BC and DABC hybrid composites with calcium phosphate could be considered promising materials for bone tissue regeneration. 相似文献

This article aims to identify the appropriate sampling duration for a tribocharging process on a vibratory feeder device in order to compute the capability indexes and set up a statistical control procedure. The outcome of the process is evaluated as the ratio between the charge and the mass of the granules that exit the tribocharging device during a given laps of time. A virtual instrument developed in LabWiew was used in conjunction with a Faraday cage connected to an electrometer and with an electronic scale, to simultaneously measure the charge and the mass of tribocharged granular plastics, for fixed sampling durations. 相似文献

Emerging wireless applications consistently demand higher data rates. Unfortunately, it is challenging to achieve high data rates within the limited amount of available frequency spectrum. Hence, enhanced spectral efficiency and link reliability within the available frequency spectrum are of the utmost importance in current and next generation wireless protocols. To attain high spectral efficiency and link reliability, wireless protocols employ increasingly complex 2-dimensional techniques that involve computationally-intensive matrix operations. Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication is an example of a promising technique employed by wireless protocols to deliver higher data rates at the cost of increased algorithmic complexity. Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) have traditionally been used to implement compute-intensive wireless protocols. The wireless industry has been gradually moving towards an alternative programmable platform called Software Defined Radio (SDR) due to its significant benefits, such as reduced development costs, and accelerated time-to-market. The computationally-intensive matrix operations used in current and next generation wireless protocols are extremely expensive to implement in SDR platforms with conventional Digital Signal Processor (DSP) instruction sets. Hence there is a need for novel instructions, hardware designs and algorithm enhancements to enable higher spectral efficiency on SDR platforms. In this paper, we propose Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) CoOrdinate Rotation DIgital Computer (CORDIC) instruction set extensions with CORDIC hardware support to speedup computationally-intensive matrix decomposition algorithms. The CORDIC instruction set extensions have been implemented on the Sandbridge Sandblaster SB3000 SDR platform and evaluated on conventional algorithms used for decomposing a closed loop 4-by-4 Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) MIMO channel into independent Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) channels. Our experimental results on the closed-loop MIMO channel decomposition using CORDIC instructions demonstrate more than 6x speedup over a Sandblaster baseline implementation that uses state-of-the-art SIMD DSP instructions. The CORDIC instructions also provide similar numerical accuracy when compared to the baseline implementation. To improve the quality requirements for copper deposits, the influence of some inhibition agents added to the acidic copper bath has been studied. Several aromatic nitrogen compounds have been tested as inhibition agents, such as aniline, N-methylaniline, N-ethylaniline, N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA), and N,N-diethylaniline (DEA). The electrochemical behavior of these organic additives and the most relevant aspects of the electrochemical behavior of copper in acid solutions have been analyzed by cyclic voltammetry. At the same time, a correlation between voltammetric data and molecular properties of protonated amines obtained by molecular modeling has been performed. The morphology of the copper deposits obtained in the absence and presence of organic compounds has been studied by scanning electron microscopy. An improvement of the roughness degree and crystallite size upon addition of aromatic amine has been found. Best results were obtained for DMA and DEA working at room temperature (25 ± 0.1 °C) and 200 A m−2 current density, in 1 mol L−1 sulfuric acid solution with 50 g L−1 Cu2+. 相似文献
