Administration of the neuropeptide galanin increases food intake in laboratory rats and mice, however this increase has only been observed under conditions of free-feeding. As there is a growing distinction between consummatory and instrumental behavior, we assessed whether galanin would differentially affect food consumption when food was freely available or when the same food was response-contingent. We also tested whether food restriction would interact with galanin's effect on food consumption in either condition. As in previous studies, galanin significantly increased food consumption under free access conditions. However, when food was contingent upon lever-pressing, galanin had no such stimulatory effect. Food-restriction increased basal feeding levels in both tasks but there was no interaction between food restriction and free or response-contingent food intake. These results demonstrate that galanin-induced feeding stimulation is limited to conditions of free access and support the theoretical distinction between consummatory and instrumental behavior. The authors describe a transient phase during training on a movement sequence wherein, after an initial improvement in speed and decrease in variability, individual participants' performance showed a significant increase in variability without change in mean performance speed. Subsequent to this phase, as practice continued, variability again decreased, performance significantly exceeded the gains predicted by extrapolation of the initial learning curve, the type of errors committed changed, and performance became more coherent. The transient phase of increased variability may reflect a mixture of 2 (or more) performance routines before the more effective one is set and mastered, presumably the setting up of a sequence-specific representation. Both group and individual analyses indicated a departure from the single process (e.g., power-law) model of learning. However, although similar phases appeared in the mean group data, there was little correspondence to individual participants' time courses, and the individuals' gains in the second low-variability phase were masked. We describe a self-limiting, low-energy argon-ion-milling process that enables noncircular device patterns, such as squares or hexagons, to be formed using precursor arrays of uniform circular openings in poly(methyl methacrylate) defined using electron beam lithography. The proposed patterning technique is of particular interest for bit-patterned magnetic recording medium fabrication, where square magnetic bits result in improved recording system performance. Bit-patterned magnetic medium is among the primary candidates for the next generation magnetic recording technologies and is expected to extend the areal bit density limits far beyond 1 Tbit/in(2). The proposed patterning technology can be applied either for direct medium prototyping or for manufacturing of nanoimprint lithography templates or ion beam lithography stencil masks that can be utilized in mass production.  相似文献

The problem addressed by this paper is to enable a manufacturer's representative to configure an inter-office switch with a balance of desirable functionality and measured performance under several potential extremes of traffic. The zone-configuration evaluator diagram (ZCED), a decision aid that generates the tradeoffs among different configurations, is developed to enable the switch manufacturer to forego the past practice of guaranteeing absolute performance to all of its diverse customers. This guarantee was achieved in the past by the manufacturer supporting a single conservative configuration only. The ZCED simultaneously characterizes (i) customer needs in three regimes: safety-critical, business-critical, or non-critical; (ii) extremes of traffic in terms of non-peak, average, peak, and peak–peak scenarios; and (iii) measurable performance in terms of frequency of lost transactions. Thus, a manufacturer's representative selects a configuration appropriate to the customer's individual needs and the manufacturer achieves higher revenue on the sale of desirable functions and features. A demonstration of the ZCED is developed based on a performance simulation of an actual small-office switch. The ZCED concept is readily adaptable to the configuration of other communication devices with diverse customer needs, traffic loads, and optional functionalities.  相似文献

The effect of water content on the glass transition temperature of Swiss cheese bioaroma microencapsulated with a spray dryer was determined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) while mass loss was determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The sorption isotherm behavior was assessed at 15–45°C. Data were fitted with different sorption models. The bioaroma microparticles were produced via spray drying in a matrix with a 1:1 ratio (w/w) of maltodextrin 20DE and modified corn starch (Capsul). The isotherms displayed Type II behavior, and the best fit was obtained by the Guggenheim–Anderson–de Boer (GAB) model (coefficient of determination R² ≥ 0.98). The DSC analysis showed that the increased equilibrium moisture content caused a significant reduction in the Tg of the microparticles. The samples stored at intermediate humidity showed thermal stability and the samples with equilibrium moisture content of 17.92% showed a lower mass loss.  相似文献

Amyloid β is an inherently disordered peptide that can form diverse neurotoxic aggregates, and its 42-amino-acid isoform is believed to be the agent responsible for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cellular uptake of the peptide is a pivotal step for it to be able to exert many of its toxic actions. The cellular uptake process is complex, and numerous competing internalization pathways have been proposed. To date, it remains unclear which of the uptake mechanisms are particularly important for the overall process, and improvement of this understanding is needed, so that better molecular AD therapeutics can be designed. Chirality can be used as a unique tool to study this process, because some of the proposed mechanisms are expected to proceed in stereoselective fashion, whereas others are not. To shed light on this important issue, we synthesized fluorescently labeled enantiomers of amyloid β and quantified their cellular uptake, finding that uptake occurs in stereoselective fashion, with a typical preference for the l stereoisomer of ≈5:1. This suggests that the process is predominantly receptor-mediated, with likely minor contributions of non-stereoselective mechanisms.  相似文献

The characteristics of fatigue crack propagation in welds produced in conventional conditions (welds made out of water) and in underwater repair welding conditions (underwater wet welding) were evaluated out of water. The fatigue crack growth rates da/dN showed considerable dependence on pore density and distribution, factors that vary significantly with the welding process and the environment. Variations in the fatigue crack propagation rate were correlated with analysis of the fracture surface in the zone of stable crack propagation. The results of this study show that the underwater wet welding procedure produces weld metal resistant to fatigue, which is suitable for use at low applied stresses in offshore structures.  相似文献
