Studied feminine anxiety in the wives of doctoral candidates at a Canadian university during 1971-1972. Group 1 consisted of 29 Ss whose educational level was equivalent to that of their husbands, while Group 2 consisted of 28 Ss whose educational level was inferior to that of their husbands. All Ss were working outside the home. Anxiety was measured by a French version of the Institute for Personality and Ability Testing Anxiety Scale Questionnaire. No significant difference was found between groups on the Global Anxiety or the Manifest Anxiety score, although significantly different results appeared on the Latent Anxiety score. The groups also differed significantly on the last 2 of the 5 factors contributing to anxiety. Results are discussed in relation to the literature on this topic. INTERPHASE MASS TRANSFER FROM SPOUTS CONNECTING THE DISTRIBUTOR PLATE TO FORMING BUBBLES IN FLUIDIZED BEDS

Axial and radial concentration profiles of two tracer gases, methane and naphthalene, have been measured above orifices feeding gas into the base of fluidized beds of diameter 152 mm. The experiments were carried out under hydrodynamic conditions that led to short spouts connecting a central orifice to forming bubbles. Under these conditions mass transfer is shown to be primarily due to convective outflow from the spouts into the dense phase. The mass transfer is predicted with reasonable success by a convective model which uses pressure profiles to help fix hydrodynamic variables and assumes a series of well mixed annular cells in the dense phase.     

Striatal extracellular dopamine levels in rats with haloperidol-induced depolarization block of substantia nigra dopamine neurons

Correlations between substantia nigra (SN) dopamine (DA) cell activity and striatal extracellular DA were examined using simultaneous extracellular single-unit recordings and in vivo microdialysis performed in drug-naive rats and in rats treated repeatedly with haloperidol (HAL). Intact rats treated with HAL for 21-28 d exhibited significantly fewer active DA cells, indicating the presence of depolarization block (DB) in these cells. However, in rats that received surgical implantation of the microdialysis probe followed by a 24 hr recovery period, HAL-induced DA cell DB was reversed, as evidenced by a number of active DA neurons that was significantly higher than that in HAL-treated intact rats and similar to that of drug-naive rats. In contrast, using a modified probe implantation procedure that did not reverse SN DA neuron DB, we found striatal DA efflux to be significantly lower than in controls and significantly correlated with the reduction in DA neuron spike activity. Furthermore, although basal striatal DA efflux was independent of SN DA cell burst-firing activity in control rats, these variables were significantly correlated in rats with HAL-induced DA cell DB. Therefore, HAL-induced DB of SN DA neurons is disrupted by implantation of a microdialysis probe into the striatum using standard procedures. However, a modified microdialysis method that allowed reinstatement of DA neuron DB revealed that the HAL-induced inactivation of SN DA neurons was associated with significantly lower extracellular DA levels in the striatum. Moreover, the residual extracellular DA maintained in the presence of DB may, in part, depend on the burst-firing pattern of the noninactivated DA neurons in the SN.     

Intrauterine alcohol and nicotine exposure: Attention and reaction time in 4-year-old children.

452 4-yr-old children whose mothers had been interviewed during pregnancy regarding alcohol, smoking, and drug use were examined with a computer-controlled vigilance task to assess attention and RT. Multiple regression analyses were used to permit testing of alcohol and nicotine effects after adjusting for the S's birth order, maternal education, nutrition, and caffeine (and alcohol or nicotine, whichever was relevant). Maternal alcohol use during early pregnancy was significantly related to poor attention (more errors of omission and more errors of commission) and longer RT. Maternal cigarette use was significantly related to poor attention and poor orientation to the display board. Results support the hypothesis that both alcohol use (even in the absence of self-reported problems with alcohol abuse) and cigarette use by pregnant women are related to poorer attention in preschool age offspring, even when adjusting for a variety of potentially confounding variables. On the two-phase theory of fluidization

The distribution of gas flow between bubbles and the dense phase in a fludized bed is considered. By deriving general equations for gas and solids continuity in a freely-bubbling fluidized bed, the possible contributions to the invisible gas flow are formulated. It is shown that the gross assumptions inherent in “two-phase theories” of fluidization are not justified. Measurements of visible bubble flow and bubble volume fraction can give nothing more than estimates for the gas flow through the two phases.     

Integrating users into the wider broadband network via high altitude platforms

An overview of CAPANINA, a project funded by the European Commission's 6th Framework Programme, is presented. The project is developing communications technologies for use with aerial platforms with the aim of integrating users in hard to reach areas and those disadvantaged by geography into the wider broadband network. The article discusses the three broad areas of the project. Specific aspects covered include broadband applications and services selection, along with appropriate integrated delivery configurations to deliver the required capacity and upgradeability; and the associated trials, along with the required wireless and free space optical equipment. Longer-term research underway into delivering broadband backhaul to high-speed trains from aerial platforms, enabling integration with onboard WLAN access points, is also discussed.

Evaluating a prospective clinical internship: Tips for the applicant.

Discusses the general process of finding a clinical internship, a process that involves the decision to seek training, collecting information, interviewing, and making a decision. It is suggested that the prospective intern should not assume that every internship site is designed primarily to meet the interns' needs or that internships represent themselves accurately. An analogy between clinical evaluation of a client and evaluation of a prospective internship is drawn, and suggestions are made to help applicants successfully identify an acceptable internship. In vitro and in vivo Digestibility of Blended and Corresponding Interesterified Fats in Rats

The process of interesterification of fat blends namely vanaspati-ground-nut oil (40:60) (vanaspati-GNO), sal fat and groundnut oil (30:70) (sal-GNO), sheep tallow and groundnut oil (30:70) (ST-GNO), and cottonseed oil (CSO) was found to bring about limited but consistent increase in in vitro digestibility (compared to starting stocks) during first four hours studied. Apparent digestibility of blends of sal-GNO and vanaspati-GNO in rats was not effected by the process of interesterification while interesterified products had significantly higher in vivo true digestibility compared to starting stocks.
