Aligning agriculture to improve household nutrition security requires agricultural research and development specialists to understand nutrition objectives and be able to contribute to integrated agriculture-health programs. This paper builds on discussions during the household nutrition security session at the second Global Conference on Agriculture Research for Development (GCARD2). To begin, there is a summary of the variety of ways essential nutrition knowledge can underpin nutrition-sensitive agriculture. Lessons for improving nutrition through agriculture, including: efficient and effective production of diversified, highly nutritious and biofortified foods, enhancing value chains to improve nutritional quality and food safety, and better policies and investments, are highlighted. Frequently missing in discussions on nutrition-sensitive agriculture are the requirements for capacity development and extension—critical requirements to scaling-out and sustaining improved nutrition outcomes through agriculture. Gender, local empowerment and other key issues are discussed, as are the opportunities for cost-effective approaches to be implemented and expanded. Finally, research gaps, approaches and priorities to improve practice and anticipate and respond to dynamic changes in biological and social systems are discussed. Four next steps are summarized: (1) align agricultural interventions with those in health services, water and sanitation and social protection; (2) implement approaches to accelerate learning for development implementation and policy and investment enabling; (3) build local and national capacity to adapt and innovate; and (4) empower women and disadvantaged communities, in which the burden and solutions to nutrition security are found.  相似文献

IspH, also called LytB, a protein involved in the biosynthesis of isoprenoids through the methylerythritol phosphate pathway, is an attractive target for the development of new antimicrobial drugs. Here, we report crystal structures of Escherichia coli IspH in complex with the two most potent inhibitors: (E)-4-mercapto-3-methylbut-2-en-1-yl diphosphate (TMBPP) and (E)-4-amino-3-methylbut-2-en-1-yl diphosphate (AMBPP) at 1.95 and 1.7 Å resolution, respectively. The structure of the E. coli IspH:TMBPP complex exhibited two conformers of the inhibitor. This unexpected feature was exploited to design and evolve new antimicrobial candidates in silico.  相似文献

Tomato-based foods rich in Z-lycopene are potentially more bioavailable and have greater bioefficacy compared to natural tomato products which mainly contain all-E-lycopene. To prepare a stable tomato extract with a high level of Z-lycopene, geometrical isomerisation of lycopene was studied in organic solvents either alone or in the presence of a tomato extract. Interconversion between the isomers was observed in all systems with 13Z-lycopene being the least stable. Heating a tomato extract containing mainly the all-E-isomer in ethyl acetate produced successively 13Z-, 9Z- and 5Z-lycopene. An isomerised tomato oleoresin with a minimal content of the most unstable 13Z-lycopene could be obtained by refluxing tomato oleoresin in ethyl acetate for 1 week. In this isomerised tomato oleoresin, total lycopene and lycopene isomer profiles were shown to remain constant for 1 year at room temperature. Accordingly, this product is a valid source of stable and potentially highly bioavailable lycopene.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the chemical composition of the essential oils from citrus species, as well as their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. By gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, we identified thirty-seven metabolites and a range of unique compounds, contributing to the discrimination of the species. Different biological potentialities were detected depending on the species supported the significant effect of the genetic factor. C. aurantium and C. limon exhibited the highest antioxidant activities which make them a potential source of natural preservative. C. limon exhibited the highest antibacterial activities and C. reticulata the highest antifungal activities. Essential oils extracted from these agro-wastes could serve as natural food preservatives to prevent food pathogens and then extending the shelf life. A set of potential metabolites could be implicated in the observed biological activity, underlying that the antimicrobial activity is a complex trait.  相似文献

The present study aimed to assess the correlation between food and fatty acid (FA) intake and the serum phospholipid (PL) FA status in European adolescents and explored the percentage of variation in serum PL FA that could be attributed to dietary habits. Participants included 528 adolescents recruited in the HELENA Study. Dietary intake was assessed by two, self-administered, non-consecutive 24-h recalls. PL FA concentrations were measured in fasting venous serum samples. Reduced rank regressions were applied to examine the combined effect of food intakes. Results indicated that the variance in serum PL FA in adolescents, that could be explained by diet varied from 7.0 % for MUFA to 14.2 % for n-3FA. The variance in the long-chain n-3FA was mainly explained by fish intake but also by coffee and tea consumption. In conclusion this study indicated that dietary intake influences the serum PL FA status to a limited amount but that also other factors interfere. However, dietary intake is important as it is among those factors that could be modified. Furthermore, the results suggest that the overall dietary habits should be considered instead of only the consumption of single foods or nutrients, as the medium of the food or concomitant intake of foods and nutrients might interact and as such influence absorption or metabolism.  相似文献

Angle-resolved light scattering has been used for decades to quantify the surface roughness of optical components. However, because this technique is affected by the contribution of both interfaces of the sample, it cannot be applied to transparent substrates. We show how to overcome this issue and apply these principles to the characterization of superpolished samples.  相似文献
