A previous database with bending and density data of 261 structural size specimens of currently produced Uruguayan slash pine and loblolly pine timber was adjusted to meet testing and characterization requirements of European standards. Visual parameters and mechanical properties for each specimen were evaluated and their relationship was statistically analyzed. Results suggested that all specimens can be grouped in one visual grade with engineered properties similar to those of European C14 strength class. Modulus of elasticity and characteristic bending strength were the defining properties for class assignation. 相似文献

Twenty-three strains of lactic acid enterococci isolated from dromedary raw milks in Southern Algeria were investigated for their proteolytic activity and ability to produce biogenic amines by decarboxylating amino acids: histidine, tyrosine and ornithine. All strains tested displayed proteolytic activities, but none of them were able to produce detectable biogenic amines in the usual adequate laboratory media, namely, Joosten and Northolt medium and Leuschner medium. Polymerase chain reaction experiments indicate a positive correlation between the absence of the hdc and odc genes and the lack of histamine and putrescine production for all tested strains. By contrast, all strains appeared to possess tdc gene, but no correlation was found with a negative expression of tyrosine decarboxylase.

In shedding light on the 1908–9 competition for Greater Copenhagen this article examines the contest as an instrument for the accumulation and transmission of planning know‐how, ideas and innovations in relation to the development of town planning theory and practice in the Nordic Countries. Plans are considered as both technical and cultural graphics marks reflecting alternative and possibly contradictory images of the greater city or city of the future. The discussion focuses on the relationship between urban design's twin polarities: urban transformation and creation on the one hand; concern for conservation and urban continuity on the other. After considering the competition's international dimension, the article explores the civic art strand of design in northern Europe before 1914 and the idea of the historic city by investigating the conservation movement that flourished in Copenhagen when there were rapid changes in the physical fabric. The article, based on archive materials, analyses of awarded and non‐awarded entries alike, illustrates how architects, engineers and surveyors combined their design of the city's extensions with conservation schemes for both peripheries and centre. It is suggested that, at a time when Nordic municipal authorities were pressing for comprehensive town planning, planners strove to provide ways of protecting the existing built environment. This involved not only safeguarding an emerging ‘historic city’ in contrast to the new extensions, but also proposals for maintaining urban continuity in the peripheries. 相似文献

We present the results of a chemical etching stability study carried out on ZnO thin films doped with several elements deposited by spray pyrolysis. Prior to the etching, a structural study was done by X-ray diffraction and the texture of the samples was obtained by scanning electron microscopy. The samples were etched employing a solution of dilute hydrochloric acid. The etching rates obtained for the different samples depend on the dopant element and our results confirm that films doped with Cr present the highest stability against chemical etching. 相似文献

Poor mechanical properties of biological tissue are known to cause wear, leading to the failure of cardiac bioprostheses made of calf pericardium. Different chemical agents such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) are presently being tested as possible inhibitors of the calcification process. The objective of this report was to determine the mechanical behavior of calf pericardium treated with SDS for 24 h and the influence of the suture on the mechanical properties of the tissue. Forty-eight samples were tested: 24 subjected to a standard treatment with glutaraldehyde (12 sewn with 4/0 silk suture thread) and 24 incubated with SDS for 24 h (12 sewn with the same suture thread). Each sutured and non-sutured sample was cut into two strips to yield paired samples. All were subjected to tensile stress to breaking point. The mean stress at breaking point in the non-sutured series treated with glutaraldehyde alone was 16.42 and 13.85 MPa depending on the region of the pericardium, while in the sutured samples subjected to glutaraldehyde the mean stress was 7.50 and 7.63 MPa, respectively, differences which were statistically significant (p = 0.03 and p = 0.003, respectively) when the means for non-sutured samples from equivalent regions treated with glutaraldehyde were compared. The stress at breaking point was lower in the SDS-treated series, ranging between 2.60 and 3.56 MPa. The mathematical functions that govern the stress/strain or deformation were obtained. In the series of pericardium treated with SDS, deformations of 10% were produced with stresses of under 0.4 MPa, an outcome that is intolerable from the constructive point of view. We established a regression model that enabled us to determine the mechanical behavior of a sutured sample by testing a contiguous piece of tissue, with a high correlation coefficient (r > 0.99). We have studied the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of Zr1-xCexO2 and Ce1-xLaxO2-x/2 initially to grow buffer layers for perovskite films deposited on Si, LaAlO3, SrTiO3 and MgO and then to produce tunneling barriers for cuprate or manganite heterostructures. On (1 0 0) Si, the deposition of Zr1-xCexO2 (x = 0.12) produces a smooth epitaxial layer (R
RMS = 0.25/1m2), which allows the further deposition of high quality YBa2Cu3O7 (Tc 88 K) and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films. On the other hand, the use of Ce1-xLaxO2-x/2 (0 x 0.4) makes it possible to match the YBa2Cu3O7 and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 layers to various substrates. The buffer layers are epitaxially grown with a 45° rotation of the in-plane axes with respect to those of the substrate, and the smoothness is high (R

In the case of an ultra-thin barrier (2.5 nm) of Ce1-xLaxO2-x/2 sandwiched in a La0.7Sr0.3MnO3, the out-of-plane mismatch of 2 induces distortions at the interface steps, which propagate into the topmost La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 layer. A short-term, problem-focused Individual Psychological Support (IPS) intervention was evaluated. The IPS was one of the interventions in a study where 527 patients newly diagnosed with breast, colorectal, gastric or prostate cancer were randomised between IPS (n = 265) and a control condition (n = 262). The IPS made use of cognitive-behavioural techniques and aimed at reducing depression and anxiety, to increase the feeling of mastery of the situation and to facilitate active participation in medical treatments. Half of the patients receiving the IPS had more than 2 sessions. After termination of the IPS, the patients were mailed a questionnaire concerning satisfaction with and perceived benefit from the IPS. A majority of the responding patients stated that their problems were addressed to a great extent, that the number of contacts was adequate and that the IPS came at the right time. This paper reviews current knowledge about the effect of testicular germ cell cancer (TGCC) on gonadal function and of cancer treatment on spermatogenesis and Leydig cell function. It is well documented that testicular cancer is associated with impaired spermatogenic function and some patients already have impairment of Leydig cell function before orchidectomy. The degree of spermatogenic dysfunction is higher than what can be explained by local tumour effect and by a general cancer effect, since patients with other malignant diseases have normal, or only slightly decreased, semen quality. Furthermore, sperm counts after orchidectomy are further reduced to less than half of the values in healthy men, even in patients cured from the cancer disease after orchidectomy alone. These observations are supported by histological investigations which have shown a high prevalence of abnormalities of spermatogenesis in the contralateral testis in patients with unilateral TGCC. The association between testicular cancer and poor gonadal function is very interesting both from a biological and from a therapeutic point of view. Firstly, the increase in incidence of testicular cancer has been suggested to be associated with a general decline in male reproductive health and it seems likely that the development of TGCC shares common aetiologic factors with development of other types of testicular dysfunction. This suggestion is supported by the observation that men with various types of gonadal dysfunction such as testicular dysgenesis, androgen insensitivity syndrome, and cryptorchidism have increased risk of testicular cancer. Secondly, the general cure rate in patients with testicular cancer exceeds 90% and the quality of life, including fertility aspects, is therefore important in the management of these patients. Spermatogenesis is already so severely impaired before treatment that fertility is lower than in healthy men. Moreover, radiotherapy and chemotherapy both induce dose-dependent impairment of spermatogenesis and recovery of spermatogenesis after treatment may be long lasting even more than five years in some patients. Sufficient androgen production is seen in the majority of the patients, but some patients suffer from testosterone deficiency. The effect of chemotherapy on Leydig cell function also seems to be dose-dependent. In conclusion there is no doubt that testicular cancer is associated with poor gonadal function even before treatment. Furthermore, the treatment of testicular cancer may have a serious impact on the gonadal function in these patients, most of whom are in the reproductive age. Moreover, the epidemiological and clinical data indicate a common aetiology between testicular germ cell cancer and other abnormalities in male reproductive health (such as infertility and cryptorchidism). These observations are in agreement with the suggestions of hormonal involvement in the aetiology of testicular cancer. Generally, men with TGCC need counselling about their reproductive function with respect to semen cryopreservation, chance of recovery of spermatogenesis, fertility, and the possible need for androgen replacement. 相似文献
