A study of electrochemical bleaching of cellulose pulp was carried out in an electrolyte cell composed of a horizontal graphite anode and a parallel stainless screen steel cathode, using NaCl as electrolyte. Variables studied were: current density, sodium chloride concentration, pulp concentration, pH and temperature. The rate of bleaching was found to increase with increasing current density, salt concentration and temperature. The rate of bleaching was found to decrease with increasing pH and pulp concentration. Energy consumption ranged from 0.1 kWh kg?1 (pulp) to 1.75 kWh kg?1 (pulp), depending on current density and degree of bleaching. The quality of electrochemically bleached pulp was found to compare favourably with that of chemically bleached pulp. 相似文献

In this paper, we present bandwidth efficient selective retransmission method in conjunction with adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme for OFDM waveform. In the proposed method, when a packet failure occurs, receiver requests retransmission of information symbols prone to error corresponding to the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) sub-carriers of OFDM modulation. The selective retransmission avoids unnecessary retransmission and AMC chooses a proper modulation and coding scheme with an objective to maximize the throughput. Our method achieves higher throughput as compared to conventional retransmission methods such as Chase combining hybrid automatic repeat reQuest (CC-HARQ) and incremental redundancy hybrid automatic repeat reQuest (IR-HARQ). We also provide the throughput and delay analysis of the proposed method for non-truncated ARQ. The simulation results demonstrate throughput gain without significant impact on delay as compared to the conventional retransmission approaches. 相似文献

A new probe for the in situ measurement of the complex dielectric constant of materials in the microwave frequency region is described. The probe uses two stub antennas mounted on a cylinder. The cylinder is inserted in the material and the transmission coefficient between the two antennas is measured. By comparing this signal with that predicted from a numerical model of the probe obtained by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method we can determine the dielectric constant of the material. The stability and rheology of an Egyptian Heavy crude oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by an anionic (TDS) and a nonionic (NPE) surfactants individually or in a mixture have been studied. The study reveals that, the viscosity of the crude oil decreases when it is emulsified with water in the form of an oil-in-water type of emulsion. The stability of the oil-in-water emulsion increases as the surfactant concentration and speed of mixing of the emulsion increases. Fresh water and synthetic formation water have been used to study the effect of aqueous phase salinity on the stability and viscosity of the emulsion. Surfactant dissolved in synthetic formation water has been utilized to find out the possibility of injecting the surfactant into a well bore to effect emulsification in the pump or tubing for enhancing the production of heavy crude oils as oil-in-water emulsion. Palm leaves as a woody lignocellulose, together with polystyrene, were used to produce composites. Chemithermal mechanical pulps (CTMP) were obtained from palm leaves under alkaline or acidic conditions. Appropriate bending strength was obtained from palm leaves and their CTMP pulps prepared under neutral or acidic conditions. The bulky fibers resulted from the alkaline pulps lead to composites of low bending strength. Thus, the cooking conditions of the palm leaves to obtain CTMP pulp play an important role on the properties of the composites. The nonbulky fibers lead to the formation of trapped pockets air as the number of the hydrogen bond are few. The presence of these air pockets allows the polystyrene solution to enter forming bonding between the interfaces. It is also found that the lower the density of the composites, the lower the internal bond strengths. The chemical constituents of the CTMP pulps, as well as the yields of the pulps, may influence the properties of the composites. Increasing the percentage of polystyrene in the composites, the mechanical properties increased. The water uptake and the swellability decreased until 20% polystyrene concentration and then levelled off. The thickness and density behaved the same. However, the type of substrate of the composite and the weight fraction are the important factors in determining the properties of the composites. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Multi‐carrier technologies in general, and OFDM and MC‐CDMA in particular, are an integral part of the wireless landscape. In this second part of a two‐part survey, the authors present an innovative set of spreading codes known as CI codes, and demonstrate how these significantly increase performance and capacity in OFDM and MC‐CDMA systems, all the while eliminating PAPR concerns. Regarding OFDM: the spreading of each symbol over all N carriers using CI spreading codes (replacing the current one symbol per carrier strategy) are presented. CI codes are ideally suited for spreading OFDM since, when compared to traditional OFDM, CI‐based OFDM systems achieve the performance of coded OFDM (COFDM) while maintaining the throughput of uncoded OFDM, and, at the same time, eliminate PAPR concerns. When applied to MC‐CDMA, CI codes provide a simple means of supporting 2N users on N carriers while maintaining the performance of an N‐user Hadamard Walsh code MC‐CDMA system, i.e., CI codes double MC‐CDMA network capacity without loss in performance. The CI codes used in OFDM and MC‐CDMA systems are directly related to the CI pulse (chip) shapes used to enhance TDMA and DS‐CDMA (see part 1): hence, the CI approach provides a common hardware platform for today's multi‐carrier/multiple‐access technologies, enabling software radio applications. Green tea (GT)‐derived catechins; epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in particular are commonly used nutraceuticals for their free‐radical scavenging activity (FRSA). The influence of photodegradation on the protective power of GT nutracenticals against oxidative stress was thoroughly explored. Photodegradation of GT extracts was carried out and monitored using orthogonal stability‐indicating testing protocol; in vitro and in vivo assays. Total polyphenol content (TPC) and FRSA were determined spectrophotometrically while EGCG was selectively monitored using SPE‐HPLC. In vivo assessment of photodegraded samples was investigated via measuring a number of biomarkers for hepatic oxidative stress and apoptosis (caspase‐3, inducible nitric oxide synthase, nitric oxide, mitogen‐activated protein kinase, glutathione, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, nuclear factor kappa beta, and nuclear factor erythroid 2‐related factor) as well as liver damage (alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase) in serum of rats previously subjected to oxidative stress. Results showed complete degradation of EGCG in photodegraded green tea samples with no correlation with either TPC or FRSA. On the other hand, in vivo assay results revealed not only loss of activity but formation of harmful pro‐oxidants. Photostability was found crucial for the protective effect of GT extract against lead acetate insult. Results confirmed that careful design of quality control protocols requires correlation of chemical assays to bioassays to verify efficacy, stability, and most importantly safety of nutraceuticals. 相似文献

In this study, an effective enrichment technique was applied to isolate different bacterial strains with capabilities to denitrogenate carbazole (CAR), as a model compound for nitrogenous polyaromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs). Twenty-four different CAR-denitrogenating bacterial strains were isolated from mineral coke samples. From all, a Gram +ve bacterial isolate designated BS1 showed a higher biodenitrogenation (BDN) efficiency relevant to the well-known biodenitrogenating bacterium strain Pseudomonas resinovorans CA10, recording 77.15 and 60.66% removal of 1000 ppm CAR with the production of 119.79 and 102.43 ppm anthranilic acid, and 121.19 and 90.33 ppm catechol, as by-products, respectively. BS1 was identified by 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis to be Bacillus clausii BS1 (NCBI GenBank Accession no. KF985981) with a similarity of 99.14%. The CAR-BDN pathway was also elucidated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis (GC/MS), which proved further metabolism of catechol to muconic acid. 相似文献

Because of its unique properties, such as specific functionality and large specific surface area, iron oxide nanoadsorbents had showed potential for energy and environmental applications. This work investigated the adsorptive removal of different metal ions from wastewater by superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoadsorbents (Fe3O4). Batch‐adsorption technique was employed to assess the kinetic behaviour and adsorption equilibrium of cadmium, cobalt and nickel. Accordingly, the effect of the following variables on the adsorption reaction was tested, namely: solution pH, contact time and temperature. Metal ion adsorption was found to be highly pH dependent with a maximum uptake achieved around pH 5.5. Kinetic studies showed that adsorption was fast and equilibrium was achieved in less than 60 min. The external mass transfer kinetic model was applied to the experimental results and provided reasonable overall volumetric mass transfer coefficients. Adsorption isotherms were determined and appropriately described by the Freundlich and Langmuir models, with a better fit to the Freundlich model. The amount of metal ion adsorbed increased as the temperature increased, suggesting an endothermic adsorption process. The thermodynamics studies indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic in nature. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering 相似文献
