We report excitation of surface plasmon in a gold-coated side-polished D-shape microstructure optical fiber (MOF). As the leaky evanescent field from the fiber core becomes highly localized by the plasmon wave, its intensity also gets amplified significantly. Here we demonstrate an efficient use of this intensified field as excitation in fluorescence spectroscopy. The so-called plasmonic enhanced fluorescence emission from Rhodamine B has been investigated experimentally. First, plasmonic effect alone was found to provide an immediate fluorescence enhancement factor of two. Second, experimental results show a good agreement with theoretical modeling. Strong evanescent field generation and surface enhancement with simple metallic coating makes this fiber based device a good candidate for compact fluorescence spectroscopy. 相似文献

In this paper, we investigate control strategies for a scalar, one-step delay system in discrete-time, i.e., the state of the system is the input delayed by one time unit. In contrast with classical approaches, here the control action must be a memoryless function of the output of the plant, which comprises the current state corrupted by measurement noise. We adopt a first order state-space representation for the delay system, where the initial state is a Gaussian random variable. In addition, we assume that the measurement noise is drawn from a white and Gaussian process with zero mean and constant variance. Performance evaluation is carried out via a finite-time quadratic cost that combines the second moment of the control signal, and the second moment of the difference between the initial state and the state at the final time. We show that if the time-horizon is one or two then the optimal control is a linear function of the plant’s output, while for a sufficiently large horizon a control taking on only two values will outperform the optimal affine solution. This paper complements the well-known counterexample by Hans Witsenhausen, which showed that the solution to a linear, quadratic and Gaussian optimal control paradigm might be nonlinear. Witsenhausen’s counterexample considered an optimization horizon with two time-steps (two stage control). In contrast with Witsenhausen’s work, the solution to our counterexample is linear for one and two stages but it becomes nonlinear as the number of stages is increased. The fact that our paradigm leads to nonlinear solutions, in the multi-stage case, could not be predicted from prior results. In contrast to prior work, the validity of our counterexample is based on analytical proof methods. Our proof technique rests on a simple nonlinear strategy that is useful in its own right, since it outperforms any affine solution. 相似文献

The aim of this paper is to deal with the problem of fault tolerant control in the framework of discrete event systems modeled as automata. A fault tolerant controller is a controller able to satisfy control specifications both in nominal operation and after the occurrence of a fault. This task is solved by means of a parameterized controller that is suitably updated on the basis of the information provided by online diagnostics: the supervisor actively reacts to the detection of a malfunctioning component in order to eventually meet degraded control specifications. Starting from an appropriate model of the system, we recall the notion of safe diagnosability as a necessary step in order to achieve fault tolerant control. We then introduce two new notions: (i) “safe controllability”, which represents the capability, after the occurrence of a fault, of steering the system away from forbidden zones and (ii) “active fault tolerant system”, which is the property of safely continuing operation after faults. Finally, we show how the problem can be solved using a general control architecture based on the use of special kind of diagnoser, called “diagnosing controller”, which is used to safely detect faults and to switch between the nominal control policy and a bank of reconfigured control policies. A simple example is used to illustrate the new notions and the control architecture introduced in the paper. 相似文献

The design of an adaptive learning regulator is addressed for uncertain minimum phase linear systems (with known bounds, known upper bound on system order, known relative degree, known high frequency gain sign) and for unknown exosystems (with unknown order, uncertain frequencies). On the basis of a known bound on system uncertainties and a known bound on the modeled exosystem frequencies, a new adaptive output error feedback control algorithm is proposed which guarantees exponential convergence of both the output and the control input errors into residual bounds which decrease as the exosystem modeling error decreases. Exponential convergence of both errors to zero is obtained when the regulator exactly models all exosystem excited frequencies, while asymptotic convergence of both errors to zero is achieved when the actual exosystem is overmodeled by the regulator. The new algorithm generalizes existing learning controllers since, in the case of periodic references and/or disturbances, the knowledge of the period is not required. 相似文献

A powerful approach for analyzing the stability of continuous-time switched systems is based on using optimal control theory to characterize the “most unstable” switching law. This reduces the problem of determining stability under arbitrary switching to analyzing stability for the specific “most unstable” switching law. For discrete-time switched systems, the variational approach received considerably less attention. This approach is based on using a first-order necessary optimality condition in the form of a maximum principle (MP), and typically this is not enough to completely characterize the “most unstable” switching law. In this paper, we provide a simple and self-contained derivation of a second-order necessary optimality condition for discrete-time bilinear control systems. This provides new information that cannot be derived using the first-order MP. We demonstrate several applications of this second-order MP to the stability analysis of discrete-time linear switched systems. 相似文献

Autocatalytic networks, in particular the glycolytic pathway, constitute an important part of the cell metabolism. Changes in the concentration of metabolites and catalyzing enzymes during the lifetime of the cell can lead to perturbations from its nominal operating condition. We investigate the effects of such perturbations on stability properties, e.g., the extent of regions of attraction, of a particular family of autocatalytic network models. Numerical experiments demonstrate that systems that are robust with respect to perturbations in the parameter space have an easily “verifiable” (in terms of proof complexity) region of attraction properties. Motivated by the computational complexity of optimization-based formulations, we take a compositional approach and exploit a natural decomposition of the system, induced by the underlying biological structure, into a feedback interconnection of two input–output subsystems: a small subsystem with complicating nonlinearities and a large subsystem with simple dynamics. This decomposition simplifies the analysis of large pathways by assembling region of attraction certificates based on the input–output properties of the subsystems. It enables numerical as well as analytical construction of block-diagonal Lyapunov functions for a large family of autocatalytic pathways. 相似文献

Computation of approximate optimal policies in a partially observed inventory model with rain checks

This paper proposes a new methodology to solve partially observed inventory problems. Generally, these problems have infinite-dimensional states that are conditional distributions of the inventory level. Our methodology involves linearizing the state transitions via unnormalized probabilities. It then uses an appropriate functional basis to represent the state. Considering the speed and stability of computations, we choose truncated Chebyshev polynomials as the basis. We use Fast Fourier Transforms along with an appropriate discretization of inventory levels to speed up the computations. These main ideas are blended to obtain an iterative algorithm to solve a partially observed inventory model with rain checks. In this model, the inventory manager (IM) does not know the inventory level when it is positive. Otherwise, the IM fully observes it. This model provides a context to illustrate our methodology, which applies to other such models. Although this model has been studied mathematically in the literature, the use of our algorithm provides a numerical approximation of the optimal order quantities. These are compared to the orders released under a base mean-stock policy, where the IM replaces the unobserved inventory level with its mean and applies the well-known base stock policy. We show numerically that the optimal order quantity is very close to the base mean-stock order quantity, when the variance of the inventory distribution is small. When the mean of the inventory distribution is large, the optimal order quantity is more than the base mean-stock quantity, and it is the other way around when the mean is small or negative. These insights are explained via uncertainty and information effects and their interplay. We expect this interplay to show up in other partially observed inventory models. 相似文献

Target sales rebate (TSR) contracts have been shown to be useful in coordinating supply chains with risk-neutral agents. However, there have been few studies on the cases with risk sensitive agents. As a result, based on the classic Markowitz portfolio theory in finance, we carry out in this paper a mean–variance (MV) analysis of supply chains under TSR contracts. We study a supply chain with a single supplier and a single risk averse retailer. We propose TSR contracts for achieving coordination. We demonstrate how TSR contracts can coordinate the supply chain which takes into consideration the degree of risk aversion of the retailer. We find that the supplier can coordinate the channel with flexible TSR contracts. In addition, we extend the supply chain model to include sales effort decision of the retailer. Conditions for TSR contracts to coordinate the supply chain with sales effort of retailer are also derived. 相似文献

In this paper, the strictly convex quadratic program (QP) arising in model predictive control (MPC) for constrained linear systems is reformulated as a system of piecewise affine equations. A regularized piecewise smooth Newton method with exact line search on a convex, differentiable, piecewise-quadratic merit function is proposed for the solution of the reformulated problem. The algorithm has considerable merits when applied to MPC over standard active set or interior point algorithms. Its performance is tested and compared against state-of-the-art QP solvers on a series of benchmark problems. The proposed algorithm is orders of magnitudes faster, especially for large-scale problems and long horizons. For example, for the challenging crude distillation unit model of Pannocchia, Rawlings, and Wright (2007) with 252 states, 32 inputs, and 90 outputs, the average running time of the proposed approach is 1.57 ms. 相似文献
