Human apolipoprotein (apo) E, a polymorphic protein with three common alleles, epsilon 2, epsilon 3, and epsilon 4, plays an important role in lipoprotein metabolism. This article describes the association of this polymorphism with lipids, apolipoproteins, and lipoproteins with a particular regard to lipoprotein particles, as defined by their apolipoprotein content, as well as the risk of myocardial infarction in a multicenter population-based case-control study (ECTIM study). In the ECTIM study, 574 male patients aged 25 to 64 were examined 3 to 9 months after myocardial infarction in four regions participating in the World Health Organization MONICA project: Belfast (Northern Ireland) and Lille, Strasbourg, and Toulouse (France). Control subjects (n = 722) were randomly selected from the regional populations. The distribution of apoE phenotypes was significantly different across the four control samples (P = .04), with a higher frequency of the epsilon 4 allele in Belfast (14.3%) than in Toulouse (8.2%). The association of apoE polymorphism with biological measurements was studied in the control groups (n = 640) after men with coronary heart disease or those taking hypolipidemic drugs were omitted, with the apoE3/3 phenotype as a reference after adjustment for concomitant factors. Individuals carrying the epsilon 2 allele had lower levels of plasma cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and apoB and higher levels of triglycerides, very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), apoC-III, apoE, lipoprotein (Lp) C-III:B, and Lp E:B. The original diagnostic 24 hour pH monitoring data in 57 children with gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) were retrospectively reviewed after a minimum of one year follow up. The tracings of children who responded to medical treatment were compared with those who failed to respond and required a fundoplication. Children with GOR secondary to oesophageal atresia/tracheo-oesophageal fistula and neurological conditions (n = 12) were analysed separately from those with primary GOR (n = 45). Children with primary GOR requiring a fundoplication (n = 9) had increased daytime reflux. The percentage time pH < 4 was the best discriminator (21% v 7%) with a threshold of 18% giving a 92% specificity and a 70% sensitivity. For children with secondary GOR the percentage time pH < 4 at night was significantly higher (29% v 3.7%) in those requiring a fundoplication (n = 5). A threshold of 18% gave an 80% specificity and an 86% sensitivity. These results show that both daytime and night time pH monitoring data can be of prognostic value in different subgroups of children with GOR. A percentage time pH < 4 of greater than 18% was a useful threshold to apply when evaluating the pH monitoring data. 相似文献

Investigated the relationship of individual differences in repressive coping styles with differences in antibody titer to Epstein-Barr (EB) viral capsid antigen in a normal, healthy college population made up of people previously exposed to EB. Each of 54 1st-yr undergraduates completed a battery of physical-status questions and items pertaining to potential behavioral immunomodulatory confounds, along with the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale. Ss reporting high and middle levels of anxiety had higher antibody titers to EB, suggesting poorer immune control over the latent virus, as compared with the low-anxious group. Similarly, high-defensive Ss had higher antibody titers than their low-defensive counterparts, and neither group differed from the middle group. The subcellular distribution in rat liver and the topography in intracellular and plasma membranes of connexin 32, a major protein component of gap junctions, was studied using sequence-specific anti-peptide antibodies generated to extracellular and intracellular domains of the protein. The distribution of connexin 32 in liver analyzed using SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western blotting showed the relative protein levels in the subcellular fractions to be: lateral plasma membranes > Golgi membranes > sinusoidal plasma membranes > lysosomes. Low amounts of connexin 32 were detected in microsomes, endosomes, and bile canalicular plasma membranes. Six highly conserved cysteine residues are located in the amino acid sequences comprising the two extracellular loops of all connexins thus far isolated, and these loops are positioned to extend the channel in the lipid bilayers across the intercellular region of the gap junction. In the present work, the intramolecular disulfide bonds linking the extracellular loops in gap junctions were shown to be present in connexins located in plasma membranes, Golgi, and a microsomal fraction, and it was concluded that the disulfide linkages were formed in the endoplasmic reticulum. In addition, immature configurations of connexin 32, probably occurring during membrane insertion, were detected in liver microsomal fractions. The results contribute to charting of the biogenetic routes followed by connexins in hepatocytes and the general mechanisms of gap junction assembly. 相似文献

We propose an image hashing paradigm using visually significant feature points. The feature points should be largely invariant under perceptually insignificant distortions. To satisfy this, we propose an iterative feature detector to extract significant geometry preserving feature points. We apply probabilistic quantization on the derived features to introduce randomness, which, in turn, reduces vulnerability to adversarial attacks. The proposed hash algorithm withstands standard benchmark (e.g., Stirmark) attacks, including compression, geometric distortions of scaling and small-angle rotation, and common signal-processing operations. Content changing (malicious) manipulations of image data are also accurately detected. Detailed statistical analysis in the form of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves is presented and reveals the success of the proposed scheme in achieving perceptual robustness while avoiding misclassification. 相似文献

In this paper a discrete dynamic model of a single workstation is used to design and analyse control algorithms for closed-loop PPC that improve performance, especially response to disturbances such as rush orders and periodic fluctuations in capacity, while ensuring that dynamic behavior remains favorable and robust. The presence of delays in adjusting capacity presents challenges in both dynamic analysis and control algorithm design that are addressed in the paper. This paper describes an automated medical record designed to allow providers to enter patient data at the point of care. The system runs on PCs and Macintoshes and uses a graphical user interface and object-oriented programming to take advantage of current mouse and pen technologies. The provider acquires all relevant patient data by pointing and clicking at selections on input screens, many of which contain anatomical drawings to help the provider quickly and accurately describe patient findings. The system also generates a grammatically correct progress note using the problem-oriented structure. Furthermore, items identified in the assessment and plans portion of the program can be ported to expert systems for medical decisions assistance or to billing systems.
