Infrared absorption due to free carriers was measured in the spectral range of 1.5–25 m at 77 and 300 K on a large variety of heavily p-doped, p++=(2-7)×1020cm-3 strained Si1-xGex quantum wells on Si grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The validity of the commonly applied theoretical approaches to describe the spectra has been thoroughly analyzed. The well-known dependence yielded by the Drude theory is not observed. Moreover, it is shown that the Boltzmann kinetic equation is invalid under our experimental conditions. The necessity of a new theory, where the interaction energy of carriers with scattering centers would be included into the energy spectrum of the system, is shown.  相似文献

Oxidized implants and their influence on the bone response   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Surface oxide properties are regarded to be of great importance in establishing successful osseointegration of titanium implants. Despite a large number of theoretical questions on the precise role of oxide properties of titanium implants, current knowledge obtained from in vivo studies is lacking. The present study is designed to address two aspects. The first is to verify whether oxide properties of titanium implants indeed influence the in vivo bone tissue responses. The second, is to investigate what oxide properties underline such bone tissue responses. For these purposes, screw-shaped/turned implants have been prepared by electrochemical oxidation methods, resulting in a wide range of oxide properties in terms of: (i) oxide thickness ranging from 200 to 1000 nm, (ii) the surface morphology of barrier and porous oxide film structures, (iii) micro pore configuration - pore sizes<8 microm by length, about 1.27 microm2 to 2.1 microm2 by area and porosity of about 12.7-24.4%, (iv) the crystal structures of amorphous, anatase and mixtures of anatase and rutile type, (v) the chemical compositions of TiO2 and finally, (vi) surface roughness of 0.96-1.03 microm (Sa). These implant oxide properties were divided into test implant samples of Group II, III, IV and V. Control samples (Group I) were turned commercially pure titanium implants. Quantitative bone tissue responses were evaluated biomechanically by resonance frequency analysis (RFA) and removal torque (RT) test. Quantitative histomorphometric analyses and qualitative enzyme histochemical detection of alkaline (ALP) and acidic phosphatase (ACP) activities were investigated on cut and ground sections after six weeks of implant insertion in rabbit tibia. In essence, from the biomechanical and quantitative histomorphometric measurements we concluded that oxide properties of titanium implants, i.e. the oxide thickness, the microporous structure, and the crystallinity significantly influence the bone tissue response. At this stage, however, it is not clear whether oxide properties influence the bone tissue response separately or synergistically.  相似文献

Angiogenesis is essential in wound healing and a common feature in chronic inflammation which is crucially involved in the biological response to biomaterials. A useful system to evaluate the angiogenic activity and the inflammatory potency of various agents is the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of the chick embryo. Here we examined its response to different biomaterials. Smooth materials such as PVC or the polyurethane Tecoflex® either unmodified or modified by an OH- or N(CH3) 3 + -end group (HEMA or MAPTAC) inhibited angiogenesis and did not induce the formation of granulation tissue. The anti-angiogenic effects of PVC, Tecoflex® and its HEMA modification, however, were only seen at an early stage of development. In contrast, the MAPTAC modified Tecoflex>® inhibited angiogenesis over the whole time. Rough materials, e.g. filter paper or a collagen/elastin membrane, stimulated angiogenesis and induced the formation of inflammatory tissue. Histological analysis revealed that the filter material was homogeneously populated with cells consisiting mainly of macrophages, fibroblasts and endothelial cells. The collagen/elastin membrane was only partially infiltrated with cells. Among those also clusters of granulocytes were present pointing to an acute inflammatory process. These data show that the angiogenic activity and inflammatory response of biomaterials strongly depend on the chemical composition and the physical structure of the material. The CAM assay appears to be a useful tool for studying biocompatibility. © 2001 Kluwer Academic Publishers  相似文献

Computed tomography (CT) provides the most reliable method to detect emphysema in vivo. Commonly used methods only calculate the area of low attenuation [pixel index (PI)], while a radiologist considers the bullous morphology of emphysema. The PI is a good, well-known measure of emphysema. But it is not able to detect emphysema in cases in which emphysema and fibrosis occur at the same time. This is because fibrosis leads to a low number of low-attenuation pixels, while emphysema leads to a high number of pixels. The PI takes the average of both and, consequently, may present a result within the normal range. METHOD: The main focus of this paper is to present a new algorithm of thoracic CT image evaluation based on pulmonary morphology of emphysema. The PI is extended, in that it is enabled to differentiate between small, medium, and large bullae (continuous low-attenuation areas). It is not a texture-based algorithm. The bullae are sorted by size into four size classes: class 1 being within the typical size of lung parenchyma; classes 2-4 presenting small, medium, and large bullae. It is calculated how much area the different classes take up of all low-attenuation pixels. The bullae index (BI) is derived from the percentage of areas covered, respectively, by small, medium, and large bullae. From the relation of the area of bullae belonging to class 4, to that of those belonging to class 2, a measure of the emphysema type (ET)is calculated. It classifies the lung by the type of emphysema in bullous emphysema or small-sized, diffuse emphysema, respectively. RESULTS: The BI is as reliable as the PI. In cases in which the PI indicates normal values while in fact emphysema is coexisting with fibrosis, the BI, nevertheless, detects the destruction caused by the emphysema. The BI combined with the ET reflects the visual assessment of the radiological expert. CONCLUSION: The BI is an objective and reliable index in order to quantify emphysematous destruction, hence, avoiding interobserver variance. This is particularly interesting for follow-up. The classification of the ET is a helpful and unique approach to achieving an exact diagnosis of emphysema.  相似文献

Freedom of mobility is the latesttrend in the evolution of digital communicationsystems. In these systems bandwidth and powerconstraints limit the mobility of the users. TCM(trellis coded modulation) is a combined coding andmodulation scheme which increases the productivity ofa digital communication system without increasing thetransmitted power or the required bandwidth. A mobilecommunication channel is affected from noise andfading because of the multipath propagation. On aRayleigh fading channel, coding should be used withtechniques which uncorrelate the received energy ofeach consecutive coded symbol. Interleaving is one ofthese techniques and used to make burst errors intorandom errors which can be corrected by errorcorrecting codes. In this paper, the trellis codingsystem which combines a regular convolutional encoder,bit interleaver, coordinate interleaver, and anappropriate decoder is considered. The analytical biterror probability upper bounds are derived for the8-PSK TCM system whose diversity is increased by usinga regular 2/3 rate convolutional code followed bythree bit interleavers and a 8-PSK signal mapperfollowed by two coordinate interleavers. Theanalytical and simulation results show that toincrease the diversity of the trellis coded M-PSKsystems in Rayleigh fading channels is the primary keyfor reliable transmission of high quality voice anddigital data.  相似文献

The main objective is to study long-term effects of legislation and promotion of child-restraint use in motor vehicles. Subgoals are to describe the level of restraint use in cars and changes in mortality and morbidity patterns in regard to differences among age groups and geographical areas (morbidity). The study areas were; ‘The First Four’, ‘The Six Counties’, ‘The Rest of Sweden’, and ‘Sweden as a whole’, and the population were two age groups — 0–6 and 7–14 years. The incidence of restraint use comes from observations of car-seat-belt usage. Outcome evaluation was based on hospital-discharge data 1978–1996 and mortality statistics 1970–1996. The level of restraint use for children in the front seat was 97% in 1988 and was equal to 1995. Mortality data shows a decrease of 2.8% on an average per year, 76% over the study period. A significant change over time in the two intervention areas was shown (annual changes of −2.8 and −1.8%), but not in the rest of Sweden. The local authorities that started early with preventive programs, such as safety seat loan schemes and those having an organised safety-promotion program showed a much better improvement than the rest of Sweden. There is a need for appropriate information for local action on childhood injury prevention to accompany national legislation.  相似文献

We developed two kinds of highly fluorescent streptavidin-based conjugates for use as universal detection reagents in ultrasensitive immunoassays. The direct conjugate was produced by covalently linking streptavidin to poly(Glu: Lys) which was labeled heavily with Eu chelates; the indirect conjugate was made by first conjugating bovine serum albumin (BSA) to poly(Glu:Lys) labeled heavily with Eu chelates and then further linking streptavidin to the conjugate of BSA-poly(Glu:Lys)-Eu chelate. Both direct and indirect conjugates were used to construct a highly sensitive time-resolved fluorometric assay for prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Of two monoclonal antibodies used in the assay, one was coated on the well surface of the microtitration strips, and the other was biotinylated. When 10 microL of sample volume was used, we found that the assay using the indirect conjugate had a detection limit of 0.006 microg/L, which was approximately 5.6-fold more sensitive than the one using Eu chelate directly labeled detection antibody and 6.8-fold more sensitive than the one using Eu chelate-labeled streptavidin. However, the assay that used the direct conjugate was 1.5-fold more sensitive than the one that utilized the indirect conjugate. When 45 microL of sample volume was used, a detection limit of 0.001 microg/L was achieved by using the direct conjugate. This improvement in sensitivity should be equally obtainable for the analytes other than PSA. We further demonstrated that the final immunoassay performance was affected not only by the quality of the streptavidin-based conjugate used but also by the quality of the biotinylated antibody reagent. The universal detection reagents described here are believed to be particularly useful for the construction of ultrasensitive time-resolved fluorometric immunoassays and are potentially applicable in other fields such as immunohistochemistry and nucleic acid detection.  相似文献

Since the share of alcohol-positive victims has been reported not to show the same reduction in pedestrian fatalities as in other 'road users', this study analysed pedestrian fatalities with special emphasis on the presence of alcohol. Autopsied pedestrian fatalities (286 victims) in northern Sweden from 1977 to 1995 were investigated, using autopsy and police reports. Blood alcohol was detected in 19% of the fatalities, with a median concentration of 1.6 g/l. The proportion of test-positive victims did not change significantly during the period of study. Males more often tested positive for alcohol than females (24 vs. 11%). Further, the test-positive victims had a lower mean age (49 vs. 59 years) and the proportion of test-positive victims was higher during weekends and nights. Pedestrian fatalities testing positive for alcohol differ from those testing negative in several respects. The public should be enlightened of the fact that drinking is a risk not only among users of motor vehicles, but also among pedestrians. Separation of pedestrians from motor vehicles by, e.g. fences, is of greatest importance.  相似文献

The processes that cause the failure of sheathless electrospray ionization (ESI) emitters, based on different kinds of gold coatings on fused-silica capillaries, are described and explained. The methods chosen for this study include electrochemical methods, ICPMS analysis of the electrolytes used, SEM studies, and electrospray experiments. Generally, the failure occurs by loss of the conductive coating. It is shown that emitters with sputter-coated gold lose their coatings because of mechanical stress caused by the gas evolution accompanying water oxidation or reduction. Emitters with gold coatings on top of adhesion layers of chromium and nickel alloy withstand this mechanical stress and have excellent durability when operating as cathodes. When operating as anodes, the adhesion layer is electrochemically dissolved through the gold film, and the gold film then flakes off. It is shown that the conductive coating behaves as a cathode even in the positive electrospray mode when the magnitude of a superimposed reductive electrophoretic current exceeds that of the oxidative electrospray current. Fairy-dust coatings developed in our laboratory (see Barnidge, D. R.; etal.Anal. Chem. 1999, 71, 4115-4118,) bygluing gold dust onto the emitter, are unaffected by the mechanical stress due to gas evolution. When oxidized, the fairy-dust coatings show an increased surface roughness and decreased conductivities due to the formation of gold oxide. The resistance of this oxide layer is however negligible in comparison with that of the gas phase in ESI. Furthermore, since no flaking and only negligible electrochemical etching of gold was found, practically unlimited emitter lifetimes may be achieved with fairy-dust coatings.  相似文献

A specially developed method is proposed to retrieve the particle volume distribution, the mean refractive index, and other important physical parameters, e.g., the effective radius, volume, surface area, and number concentrations of tropospheric and stratospheric aerosols, from optical data by use of multiple wavelengths. This algorithm requires neither a priori knowledge of the analytical shape of the distribution nor an initial guess of the distribution. As a result, even bimodal and multimodal distributions can be retrieved without any advance knowledge of the number of modes. The nonlinear ill-posed inversion is achieved by means of a hybrid method combining regularization by discretization, variable higher-order B-spline functions and a truncated singular-value decomposition. The method can be used to handle different lidar devices that work with various values and numbers of wavelengths. It is shown, to my knowledge for the first time, that only one extinction and three backscatter coefficients are sufficient for the solution. Moreover, measurement errors up to 20% are allowed. This result could be achieved by a judicious fusion of different properties of three suitable regularization parameters. Finally, numerical results with an additional unknown refractive index show the possibility of successfully recovering both unknowns simultaneously from the lidar data: the aerosol volume distribution and the refractive index.  相似文献
