Self Assembly of Polymer Structures Induced by Electric Field

A method has been developed for fabricating polymer microstructures based on electric field induced self assembly and pattern formation. A dielectric fluid placed in between two conductive plates experience a force in an applied electric field gradient across the plates, which can induce a diffusive surface instability and self construction of the fluid surface. This process is exploited for the fabrication of self assembled polymer microstructures as well as replicated patterns through the use of pre-patterned plates or electrodes. FEM simulation is used to decide the minimum wavelength and electric gradient distribution of polymer structures. A variety of structures in the micron and nanometer scales including bio-fluidic MEMS, polymer optoelectronic devices can be fabricated using this method.     

Increasing Reliability in Cable-Free Radio LANs Low Level Forwarding in HIPERLAN

Radio LANs are emerging in the computing world. They are supported by distinct configurations: on the one hand radio LANs with base stations and a wired backbone, on the other hand radio LANs implementing Intra-forwarding. Adding a new node in a radio LAN with Intra-forwarding, increases the reliability, while this reliability decreases with ad hoc or hub configurations. This advantage of Intra-forwarding is quantified. Intra-forwarding, as defined in the HIPERLAN standard, is based on a hop-by-hop policy and link check procedures. It is shown how point-to-point packets and broadcast packets are forwarded. The three basic components of Intra-forwarding needed to build and update the Intra-forwarding database are described. The originality of this approach is the use of multipoint relays which enable better scalability. The correctness of the Intra-forwarding protocol is proved and its cost is evaluated.     

Mlcrolasers based on silica microspheres

Light can be confined efficiently in the high-Q, small-volume whispering-gallery-modes observed in silica microspheres. By coupling these microspheres to eroded optical fibers and fiber tips, direct mapping of the whispering-gallery modes has been achieved and the mode numbers have been assessed. The properties of these modes have allowed us to obtain laser action with very low thresholds in Nd-doped silica microspheres. Further projects in the field of non-linear optics and cavity quantum electrodynamics are described.     

Analysis and visualisation with host-based software – The features of STNAnaVist™

This article is based on experiences with data and text mining to gain information for strategic business decisions, using host-based analysis and visualisation (A/V), primarily in the field of patents. The potential advantages of host-based A/V are pointed out and the features of the first such A/V software, STN^®AnaVist™, are described in detail. Areas covered include the user interfaces, initial set of documents for A/V, data mining, text mining, reporting, and suggestions for further development.

A new loss recovery architecture for wireless TCP

The loss recovery architecture of TCP under wireless environment is considered. We propose sent-time ordered two lists architecture as an alternative to sequence number ordered single list architecture. By keeping the sent-time order, the recovery mechanism can be more efficient and-simpler and transmission decision is decoupled from loss recovery using the second list. Simulation results show the superiority of our mechanism.     

用有限带宽反射波波形分析法进行储层横向预测

以正演地震模拟为基础的有限带宽反射波渡形分析法是一种新的储层横向预测方法。首先利用波形分解确定地震反射层的地质属性,找出能反映岩性变化的反射波波形特征参数;然后,采用多元数据聚类分析和灰色系统理论完成储层横向的预测。文中以预测江苏 J 凹陷 F 构造上阜二段生物灰岩分布及厚度横向变化为例,简述了反射波波形分析的全过程。预测结果已为钻探证实。     

Peridynamic modeling of concrete structures

The peridynamic model described in Silling (Silling, S.A., 1998. Reformation of Elasticity Theory for Discontinuous and Long-Range Forces, SAND98-2176. Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM), being a central-force model, is limited to modeling materials with a Poisson's ratio of 1/4. In this paper, the peridynamic model is generalized by adding pairwise peridynamic moments to simulate linear elastic materials with varying Poisson's ratios. The new model is called the “micropolar peridynamic model”. The micropolar peridynamic model is placed within a finite element context to enable efficacious application of boundary conditions and efficient computational solutions using an implicit, rather than an explicit solution algorithm. The implicit solution algorithm is suitable for quasistatic simulation of damage and cracking in concrete structures. With this new model, very simple tensile damage mechanisms at the micro structural (peridynamic) level are sufficient to explain a great deal of the microcracking (damage) and fracture mechanics observed in concrete structures. The new implementation appears to be computationally efficient.
