An analysis of selected spatiotemporal characteristics of isolated thunderstorms in relation to cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning over part of the eastern Mediterranean is performed. The purpose of the study is twofold: to better understand and improve the basic knowledge of the physical mechanisms of the phenomenon and to offer new means of nowcasting the lightning activity in such thunderstorms. Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) Rapid Scan Service (RSS) infrared imagery which offers the option of tracking the examined storms with a time frequency of 5 minutes is one of the two utilized datasets, the other being ZEUS very low frequency (VLF) lightning detection system’s CG discharge data. It was shown that a cloud top temperature of about ?20°C is required for the onset of lightning activity. A rapid drop of the cloud-top temperature of about 11°C in 5 minutes on average is observed a few minutes before or during lightning initiation. The maximization of the activity is usually quite close to the overall minimum cloud-top temperature of the cell. A temperature increase of 3.5°C from this overall minimum can mark the end of the activity, which is also associated to the time evolution of the cell’s horizontal extent. In fact, after the cell’s horizontal area stops to increase and/or starts to gradually diminish, CG lightning activity is expected to stop. 相似文献

Existing spatiotemporal indexes suffer from either large update cost or poor query performance, except for the B x -tree (the state-of-the-art), which consists of multiple B +-trees indexing the 1D values transformed from the (multi-dimensional) moving objects based on a space filling curve (Hilbert, in particular). This curve, however, does not consider object velocities, and as a result, query processing with a B x -tree retrieves a large number of false hits, which seriously compromises its efficiency. It is natural to wonder “can we obtain better performance by capturing also the velocity information, using a Hilbert curve of a higher dimensionality?”. This paper provides a positive answer by developing the B dual -tree, a novel spatiotemporal access method leveraging pure relational methodology. We show, with theoretical evidence, that the B dual -tree indeed outperforms the B x -tree in most circum- stances. Furthermore, our technique can effectively answer progressive spatiotemporal queries, which are poorly supported by B x -trees. 相似文献

A reverse nearest neighbor (RNN) query returns the data objects that have a query point as their nearest neighbor (NN). Although such queries have been studied quite extensively in Euclidean spaces, there is no previous work in the context of large graphs. In this paper, we provide a fundamental lemma, which can be used to prune the search space while traversing the graph in search for RNN. Based on it, we develop two RNN methods; an eager algorithm that attempts to prune network nodes as soon as they are visited and a lazy technique that prunes the search space when a data point is discovered. We study retrieval of an arbitrary number k of reverse nearest neighbors, investigate the benefits of materialization, cover several query types, and deal with cases where the queries and the data objects reside on nodes or edges of the graph. Distributed video coding (DVC) constitutes an original coding framework to meet the stringent requirements imposed by uplink-oriented and low-power mobile video applications. The quality of the side information available to the decoder and the efficiency of the employed channel codes are primary factors determining the success of a DVC system. This contribution introduces two novel techniques for probabilistic motion compensation in order to generate side information at the Wyner-Ziv decoder. The employed DVC scheme uses a base layer, serving as a hash to facilitate overlapped block motion estimation at the decoder side. On top of the base layer, a supplementary Wyner-Ziv layer is coded in the DCT domain. Both proposed probabilistic motion compensation techniques are driven by the actual correlation channel statistics and reuse information contained in the hash. Experimental results report significant rate savings caused by the novel side information generation methods compared to previous techniques. Moreover, the compression performance of the presented DVC architecture, featuring the proposed side-information generation techniques, delivers state-of-the-art compression performance. 相似文献

The performance of recent dereverberation methods for reverberant speech preprocessing prior to Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) is compared for an extensive range of room and source-receiver configurations. It is shown that room acoustic parameters such as the clarity (C50) and the definition (D50) correlate well with the ASR results. When available, such room acoustic parameters can provide insight into reverberant speech ASR performance and potential improvement via dereverberation preprocessing. It is also shown that the application of a recent dereverberation method based on perceptual modelling can be used in the above context and achieve significant Phone Recognition (PR) improvement, especially under highly reverberant conditions. 相似文献

Consider a set of servers and a set of users, where each server has a coverage region (i.e., an area of service) and a capacity (i.e., a maximum number of users it can serve). Our task is to assign every user to one server subject to the coverage and capacity constraints. To offer the highest quality of service, we wish to minimize the average distance between users and their assigned server. This is an instance of a well-studied problem in operations research, termed optimal assignment. Even though there exist several solutions for the static case (where user locations are fixed), there is currently no method for dynamic settings. In this paper, we consider the continuous assignment problem (CAP), where an optimal assignment must be constantly maintained between mobile users and a set of servers. The fact that the users are mobile necessitates real-time reassignment so that the quality of service remains high (i.e., their distance from their assigned servers is minimized). The large scale and the time-critical nature of targeted applications require fast CAP solutions. We propose an algorithm that utilizes the geometric characteristics of the problem and significantly accelerates the initial assignment computation and its subsequent maintenance. Data recorded from multiple sources sometimes exhibit non-instantaneous couplings. For simple data sets, cross-correlograms may reveal the coupling dynamics. But when dealing with high-dimensional multivariate data there is no such measure as the cross-correlogram. We propose a simple algorithm based on Kernel Canonical Correlation Analysis (kCCA) that computes a multivariate temporal filter which links one data modality to another one. The filters can be used to compute a multivariate extension of the cross-correlogram, the canonical correlogram, between data sources that have different dimensionalities and temporal resolutions. The canonical correlogram reflects the coupling dynamics between the two sources. The temporal filter reveals which features in the data give rise to these couplings and when they do so. We present results from simulations and neuroscientific experiments showing that tkCCA yields easily interpretable temporal filters and correlograms. In the experiments, we simultaneously performed electrode recordings and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in primary visual cortex of the non-human primate. While electrode recordings reflect brain activity directly, fMRI provides only an indirect view of neural activity via the Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) response. Thus it is crucial for our understanding and the interpretation of fMRI signals in general to relate them to direct measures of neural activity acquired with electrodes. The results computed by tkCCA confirm recent models of the hemodynamic response to neural activity and allow for a more detailed analysis of neurovascular coupling dynamics. 相似文献
