Classification of the degradability of 30 pharmaceuticals in water with ozone, UV and H2O2.

Experiments were conducted to assess the degradability of 30 PPCPs, selected on the basis of consumption and environmental relevance, by O3 process, UV process and AOPs consisting of UV/ H2O2, O3/UV and O3/H2O2. A batch reactor with volume of 22L of water including the PPCPs was used. For UV process, combination of UV and H2O2 or O3 that can generate OH radicals was capable of degrading the PPCPs faster than UV radiation alone. On the other hand, O3 process and O3-based/UV-based AOPs could remove a variety of the PPCPs effectively, while some PPCPs such as 2-QCA, DEET and cyclophosphamide showed a relatively low degradability compared with the other PPCPs. However, further evaluation on formation of intermediate products resulting from the degradation of the parent PPCPs will be needed because DOC concentration was not decreased with lowered concentrations of the PPCPs.     

In situ observation of absorption spectra and adsorbed species of methylene blue on indium-tin-oxide electrode by slab optical waveguide spectroscopy

In situ absorption spectra of methylene blue (MB) adsorbed on an indium-tin-oxide electrode were observed by slab optical waveguide (SOWG) spectroscopy. The absorption spectrum of the MB obtained by the SOWG spectroscopy coincided with that by conventional spectroscopy for the solution phase, and the MB existed as dimer at 0 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Upon the electrode potential of cathodic condition, the absorption spectra gradually changed showing the appearance of the monomeric species as well as the highly aggregated species of MB.     

Regulation of alkaline phosphatase gene expression in human hepatoma cells by bile acids

HHV8 is a new herpesvirus recently identified in the Kaposi's sarcoma lesions, and initially named Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus. It is a member of gamma-2 herpesvirus family and it shows a number of homologies with the Epstein-Barr virus and the herpesvirus saimiri. HHV8 genome also codes for several proteins which are homologous to cellular proteins and could disturb the regulation mechanisms of cellular proliferation and apoptosis. This is the case for a viral IL6, an antiapoptotic factor homologous to Bcl2, a viral cyclin, a member of the IRF family (interferon regulatory factors) and a G-protein-coupled receptor homologous to the IL8 receptor. Seroprevalence studies showed that HHV8 infection was not ubiquitous but rather limited to some geographic areas (Italy, Greece, Africa), and to some populations of homosexual and bisexual individuals with sexually transmitted diseases. To date, several lines of epidemiologic evidence suggest that this virus is sexually transmitted, although other routes of transmission cannot be excluded.     

Alteration of peroxisomal enzyme activities in the liver of guinea pigs caused by coplanar PCB

The hyperlipidemia is a well-known typical symptom in Yusho patients and experimental animals treated with PCBs. We have found a significant induction of CYP4A1, which catalyzes omega-hydroxylation of fatty acids, in guinea pigs by the treatment with a coplanar PCB, 3, 4, 5, 3',4-pentachlorobiphenyl (PenCB), though the P450 is reduced in the treated rats. Peroxisome has beta-oxidation enzymes distinct from mitochondrial enzymes, and also play an important role in lipid metabolism. Peroxisome proliferators have been shown to regulate the expression of CYP4A1 and peroxisomal enzymes by the same mechanism in the rat. In the present study, we examine the effect of PenCB treatment on peroxisomal enzymes in the liver of guinea pigs. As a result, the enzyme activities of hepatic peroxisome, e.g. fatty acid oxidizing system, catalase and urate oxidase, had a rising tendency by the treatment with PenCB in the animal. The results suggest that the regulation of peroxisomal enzymes and CYP4A1 is also associated in guinea pigs, and PenCB provides a similar effect of peroxisomal proliferators to the animal. The possible toxicity through the peroxisomal alteration was discussed.     

Optical and electrical properties of laser-irradiated In2O3-4 mol % SnO2

The structural, electrical and optical properties of r.f. sputtered indium-tin oxide films on fused silica substrates and laser-treated films in air were investigated. The transmittance in the visible range was increased and the electrical resistivity was decreased by the laser treatment. The laser treatment was also found to annihilate dislocations and to promote grain growth. The improvement in these optical and electrical properties may be mainly due to the annihilation of defects such as vacancies and interstitials.     

Effects of rat galanin and galanin message associated peptide (GMAP) on rat growth hormone secretion and stimulating effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid on galanin release from rat hypothalamus

A phase II study of flutamide was conducted in 24 patients with stage III and IV ovarian cancer who failed chemotherapy and who had measurable disease. Flutamide was administered at a dose of 100 mg three times daily continuously until evidence of progression. Partial response observed in 1 of the 23 evaluable patients (4.3%) lasted 3 months. Two patients had stable disease (8.7%) for 7 and 8 months. The remaining 20 patients had progression of disease within 3 months. Toxicity was mild.     

Characterization of the oligomeric states of RecA protein: monomeric RecA protein can form a nucleoprotein filament

Self-assembly of RecA protein in solution and on single-stranded DNA exerts a significant effect on the catalytic activities of this protein. To manipulate the self-association reaction, we examined the effects of various salts on the self-association of RecA from Thermus thermophilus (ttRecA) by circular dichroism spectroscopy and gel-filtration analysis. We showed that the self-association of ttRecA strongly depends on the kind and concentration of the salt, as well as on the protein concentration. Chaotropic ions were especially useful for obtaining RecA in its hexameric and monomeric states. On the basis of these observations, we were able to regulate the oligomeric states of ttRecA and we then examined the activity of RecA in various oligomeric states. Monomeric ttRecA bound to ssDNA and formed a nucleoprotein filament, which showed ssDNA-dependent ATPase activity. These results suggest that the monomeric form of RecA is an intermediate in filament formation on ssDNA.     

Differential interactions of the C terminus and the cytoplasmic I-II loop of neuronal Ca2+ channels with G-protein alpha and beta gamma subunits. I. Molecular determination

Interactions of G-protein alpha (Galpha) and beta gamma subunits (Gbeta gamma) with N- (alpha1B) and P/Q-type (alpha1A) Ca2+ channels were investigated using the Xenopus oocyte expression system. Gi3alpha was found to inhibit both N- and P/Q-type channels by receptor agonists, whereas Gbeta1 gamma2 was responsible for prepulse facilitation of N-type channels. L-type channels (alpha1C) were not regulated by Galpha or Gbeta gamma. For N-type, prepulse facilitation mediated via Gbeta gamma was impaired when the cytoplasmic I-II loop (loop 1) was deleted or replaced with the alpha1C loop 1. Galpha-mediated inhibitions were also impaired by substitution of the alpha1C loop 1, but only when the C terminus was deleted. For P/Q-type, by contrast, deletion of the C terminus alone diminished Galpha-mediated inhibition. Moreover, a chimera of L-type with the alpha1B loop 1 gained Gbeta gamma-dependent facilitation, whereas an L-type chimera with the N- or P/Q-type C terminus gained Galpha-mediated inhibition. These findings provide evidence that loop 1 of N-type channels is a regulatory site for Gbeta gamma and the C termini of P/Q- and N-types for Galpha.     

Computer supported environment for common exploitation of personal information

Personal connections have great influences on various social activities, e.g., a business negotiation. However, data of personal connections are usually diverse, dynamic and ill-formed. In this paper, we firstly propose a model and representation for personal connections, then describe the framework to deal with ill-formed information. We discuss some key criteria on developing a common exploitation environment integrated with an adaptable data-base and user interface to support group decision. Finally, we give illustrations to show that the developed environment is effective and useful.
