Preparation of inner salt polymers from vinylimidazolium sulphobetaines

The preparation and properties of ampholytic polymers has been a relatively unexplored area. In this work are discussed the syntheses of monomeric vinylimidazolium sulphobetaines, a class of aromatic inner salt monomers, their free radical polymerizations, and the properties of the resulting polymeric inner salts. Several of the ampholytic polymers prepared were shown to have hydrogel characteristics.     

Lithium grain-boundary penetration of 304L stainless steel

The grain-boundary penetration kinetics of type 304L stainless steel by lithium was investigated. A parabolic time dependence was found over the temperature range of 600–1000°C. Also, a delay time for the initiation of the penetration process was explained by the incubation time necessary to nucleate a (Li-Me-N) corrosion complex. The penetration kinetics were suggested to be controlled by the diffusion of lithium in the austenitic grain boundary.     

A study of "atypical schizophrenia". Comparison with schizophrenia and affective disorder by sex, age of admission, precipitant, outcome, and family history

Eighty-five cases of atypical schizophrenia were compared with 200 of schizophrenia, 100 of bipolar (mania), and 225 of unipolar (depression) affective disorder. Comparisons were made on the basis of sex, age at admission, precipitating factors, outcome, and a family history of schizophrenia or of affective disorder. The atypical schizophrenia differed remarkably from the schizophrenia and most closely resembled the bipolar affective disorder when allowance was made for a younger age at onset and a higher frequency of precipitants. An analysis of symptoms verified the predominance of schizophrenic features in the atypical schizophrenia, but also showed a high percentage (80%) of patients who had one or more manic symptoms at index admission. It is concluded that great care should be taken in diagnosing schizophrenia in a patient who also has manic symptoms.     

Ultrastructure of gastric myxofibroma with intracytoplasmic collagen

Electron microscopy of a small mass removed from the stomach of a 65-year-old women demonstrated a myxofibroma composed of a pure population of fibroblasts, many of which contained intracytoplasmic, membrane-bound collagen fibers similar to those found in a few other human tumors and in certain experimental conditions. This ultrastructural documentation supports the hypothesis that pure fibrous neoplasms of the stomach do occur. Electron microscopy of gastric mesenchymal tumors almost always allows for confident differentiation among fibrous, neural, and smooth muscle neoplasms.
