Desert kangaroo rats forage for seed distributed in patches in the desert environment and may remember patch locations. In Exp 1, 7 desert kangaroo rats that had discovered the location of a plastic token in 1 box accurately dug for a token hidden in the same location in a 2nd identical box. Results of Exp 2 indicated that the rats primarily remembered the spatial location of the token within the box in relation to extramaze objects and the walls of the experimental box. Female rats also remembered the chip's location in relation to objects inside the box, but males did not. Exp 3 demonstrated that the rats' ability to locate the buried token did not depend on detection of the odor of the token. The author proposes that spatial memory in kangaroo rats may have evolved as a result of an overall change in the ontogeny of the species rather than as a specialized adaptation for foraging efficiency. The properties of glass reinforced cement composites (grc) containing 2–8 vol % of alkali resistant glass fibres of lengths 10–40 mm have been studied for periods of up to 5 years in various environments. Fibre volume fraction was found to be an important factor influencing the strength of grc at all ages, while fibre length was of decreasing significance as storage periods in wet environments increased. In relatively dry conditions, little change with time of bending, tensile or impact strengths was observed, but the matrix cracking stress was reduced. In wet environments, the cracking stress tended to increase but the ultimate strength to decrease.At 28 days maximum strength was achieved with composites having 6 to 8 vol % fibre 30 to 40 mm long. Composites with similar formulations were found to have the greater strength after 5 years' storage but, after water storage or natural weathering a strength reduction had occurred. Bending strength was approximately 70% to 86% of its 28 day value, tensile strength between 55% and 84% and impact strength 32% to 78%. Young's modulus is largely dependent upon the degree of hydration of the cement matrix and in the long-term was greater for water-stored material than for that stored in dry air. 相似文献

Neurotransmission is a multistage regulated process in which a variety of active molecules contained in vesicles are liberated in response to specific stimuli from different types of neurone or related cells. This includes the release of fast neurotransmitters such as amino acids and acetylcholine from central and peripheral synapses, but also that of relatively slow-acting polypeptides from central and peripheral neurones or neuroendocrine cells. Considerable progress has been made over recent years in the understanding at a molecular level of the mechanism of regulated exocytosis, a crucial phase in this phenomenon. The currently proposed overall mechanism, which incorporates the "SNARE" hypothesis for vesicle-membrane docking and fusion, is based on data from experimental models ranging from brain synaptosomes to mast cells. Since the kinetics of the models studied and the physiological effects of the neurotransmitters implicated vary so much, it is pertinent to question whether a general mechanism can be proposed from such experimental data. This review examines known differences in putative exocytotic mechanisms for the various systems studied and attempts to relate these to the nature of the active substances released. Differences exist in each step of the exocytosis process and include the channel through which Ca2+ enters to trigger it or the internal Ca2- source, the type of vesicle in which the transmitter is packaged, the way vesicles are translocated to the surface membrane or how they dock and fuse with it. Major differences have been reported in release mechanisms of different types of vesicle, but minor differences also exist within the same vesicle class. Thus small synaptic vesicles and large dense core vesicles are translocated by distinct processes and the Ca2+ channels, Ca2+ sensors and docking proteins involved in other steps are not identical in all neuronal phenotypes. In this paper, the effect of RF power on LiCoO2 thin films was investigated using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), atomic force microscopy, UV–Vis spectrophotometer, and potentiostat. The microstructural, surface, optical and electrochemical impedance measurements were performed to LiCoO2 thin films, are used to for the fully solid-state battery cathode material. According to obtained results, the relative intensities of the Li (002) crystal phase in XRD patterns of deposited LiCoO2 thin films were increased by increasing applied RF power, for the first time. The intensity of the LiCoO2 (104) plane is nearly invariant. The relative intensities of the LiCoO2 (113) plane were decreased by increasing RF power. The peak locations of the Li (002) and LiCoO2 (104) were not changed. It was found that Li (002) relative intensities affect the all investigated parameters for the LiCoO2 thin films. Especially, transmittance value increased about 20%. The band gap of the deposited film was changed 100–300 meV drastically. Deposited samples are shown high transparency in the visible region. Surveys in Drosophila have consistently found reduced levels of DNA sequence polymorphism in genomic regions experiencing low crossing-over per physical length, while these same regions exhibit normal amounts of interspecific divergence. Here we show that for 36 loci across the genomes of eight Lycopersicon species, naturally occurring DNA polymorphism (scaled by locus-specific divergence between species) is positively correlated with the density of crossing-over per physical length. Large between-species differences in the amount of DNA sequence polymorphism reflect breeding systems: selfing species show much less within-species polymorphism than outcrossing species. The strongest association of expected heterozygosity with crossing-over is found in species with intermediate levels of average nucleotide diversity. All of these observations appear to be in qualitative agreement with the hitchhiking effects caused by the fixation of advantageous mutations and/or "background selection" against deleterious mutations. 相似文献

This study expands on a previous work by the authors where it was shown through the use of ethnography and finite element models that a link exists between the choice of grip and joint stresses. Further finite element models are created to investigate the relationship between joint stresses and hand dimensions. This is an important area of research for inclusive design, since some of the most vulnerable members of society, such as elderly women, often exhibit extremes of physical dimensions. The Cuban power sector faces a need for extensive investment in new generating capacity, under a large number of uncertainties regarding future conditions, including: rate of demand growth, fluctuations in fuel prices, access to imported fuel, and access to investment capital for construction of new power plants and development of fuel import infrastructure. To identify cost effective investment strategies under these uncertainties, a supply and power sector MARKAL model was assembled, following an extensive review of available data on the Cuban power system and resource potentials. Two scenarios were assessed, a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario assuming continued moderate electricity load growth and domestic fuel production growth, and a high growth (HI) scenario assuming rapid electricity demand growth, rapid increase in domestic fuel production, and a transition to market pricing of electricity. Within these two scenarios sets, sensitivity analyses were conducted on a number of variables. The implications of least-cost investment strategies for new capacity builds, investment spending requirements, electricity prices, fuel expenditures, and carbon dioxide emissions for each scenario were assessed. Natural gas was found to be the cost effective fuel for new generation across both scenarios and most sensitivity cases, suggesting that access to natural gas, through increased domestic production and LNG import, is a clear priority for further analysis in the Cuban context. 相似文献
