Organic films on an impervious surface (window glass) were sampled at paired indoor-outdoor sites in July 2000 and characterized for their paraffinic and polar organic compositions along an urban-rural transect. Four classes of polar compounds (C11-C31 aliphatic monocarboxylic, C6-C14 dicarboxylic, nine aromatic polycarboxylic, and five terpenoid acids) constituted between 81 and 95% (w/w) of the total organic fraction analyzed comprising n-alkanes (C10-C36), 46 PAH, 97 PCBs, and 18 OC pesticides. Concentrations of the polar compounds plus their precursors, n-alkanes, ranged from 8 to 124 microg m(-20 and were dominated by monocarboxylic acids (67-89%, w/w). On outdoor windows, n-alkanes, aromatic acids, and terpenoid acids decreased in concentration along the urban-rural transect. The carbon preference index values and the interpretations of individual compounds indicate that the main sources of n-alkanes were plant waxes followed by petrogenic sources; monocarboxylic and dicarboxylic acids were from plant waxes and animal fats. Results of principal component analysis showed closer correspondence between outdoor and indoor signatures than among locations. In outdoor films, these compounds are suggested to play an important role in mediating chemical fate in urban areas by air-film exchange and facilitating "wash-off" due to their surfactant-like properties. In indoor films, these compounds provide a medium for the accumulation of more toxic compounds.  相似文献

A linear program was developed to help seismically active communities decide: (1) how much to spend on pre-earthquake mitigation that aims to reduce future losses versus waiting until after an event and paying for reconstruction, and (2) which of the many possible mitigation activities to fund so as to minimize overall risk. The mitigation alternatives considered are structural upgrading policies for groups of buildings. Benefits of mitigation are losses avoided in future earthquakes, including structural, non-structural, contents, and time-related losses, and casualties. The model is intended to be used as a tool to support the public regional mitigation planning process. In realistic applications, the model includes millions of variables, thus requiring a special solution method. This paper focuses on two efficient solution algorithms to solve the model—a Dantzig–Wolfe decomposition algorithm and a greedy heuristic algorithm. A comprehensive numerical study compares the two algorithms in terms of solution quality and solution time. The study shows that, compared to the Dantzig–Wolfe algorithm, the heuristic algorithm is much faster as expected, and provides comparable solution quality.  相似文献

This study examined whether sociocontextual and sociocognitive variables explained the math/science goals of 409 Mexican American youth using a modified version of R. W. Lent, S. D. Brown, and G. Hackett's (1994) social cognitive career theory. Results from structural equation modeling indicated that the hypothesized model explained a significant amount of variance in math/science goals for both Mexican American girls and boys. Findings suggested that gender did not moderate relations among the variables in the hypothesized model. Results also suggested that most of the social cognitive career theory propositions tested were supported. Specifically, social class predicted math/science past performance accomplishments. Math/science past performance accomplishments and perceived parent support predicted math/science self-efficacy. Furthermore, math/science self-efficacy predicted math/science outcome expectations, and together with math/science interests, these sociocognitive variables predicted math/science interests and goals. Contrary to expectations, generation status, Anglo orientation, and Mexican orientation did not predict math/science past performance accomplishments, and past performance accomplishments did not predict math/science outcome expectations. Furthermore, Anglo orientation and perceived social support from parents, teachers, classmates, and a close friend did not predict math/science goals. The paper compares theoretical calculations with experimental data, to identify the metallurgical mechanisms with respect to the rework or repair that may be encountered in the transition period from Sn–Pb to Pb-free soldering. Thermodynamic calculations have been carried out to study material behaviour and possible formation of intermetallic precipitates during the reaction between Sn–Pb and Sn–Ag–Cu Pb-free alloys. Two Sn–Ag–Cu alloys that are relevant to current industrial interests, namely Sn–3.9Ag–0.6Cu* (known as ‘405 alloy’ in Europe and North America), and Sn–3.0Ag–0.5Cu (known as ‘305’ alloy in Asia), were reacted with different contamination levels of eutectic Sn–37Pb solder. The variables examined included those related to both the materials and processes, such as composition, temperature and cooling rate. Together these are the primary drivers with respect to the resultant solder microstructures, which were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Nanoindentation, which is suitable for the ultra-fine and complex microstructures, was also used to investigate the micromechanical properties, including hardness and elastic modulus, at both ambient and elevated temperatures. The results from this work provide guidance as to the consequence for microstructural evolution and hence mechanical integrity when small amounts of Pb exist in Pb-free alloys. As solder joints become increasingly miniaturised to meet the challenging demands of future electronic packaging, it is vitally important to consider whether the solder joint size and geometry could become a reliability issue and thereby affect the implementation of the Pb-free solders. In this study, different bumping techniques, e.g., solder dipping, stencil printing followed by solder reflow, and electroplating of solders and subsequent reflow, were used to investigate the microstructure and interfacial interactions of molten Sn and Sn-based Pb-free solders on different metallizations, e.g., copper and electroless nickel immersion gold (ENIG). The resultant microstructures from a variety of pad sizes, ranging from 1 mm down to 25 μm, and representing different solder bump geometries have been investigated. In addition, thermodynamic and combined thermodynamic-kinetic modelling has been used in order to understand the microstructure of Pb-free solders, the kinetics of dissolution of the metallizations and the formation of interfacial intermetallic compounds (IMCs). Both the experimental results and theoretical predictions suggest that the solder bump size and geometry can influence the as-soldered microstructure. In the light of the increasing importance of the microstructural features of the ultrafine solder joint in determining its long term reliability, a novel computational interface between software for thermodynamic calculations, high-level scientific computing and multiphysics modelling, is introduced. This modelling methodology provides a potential platform for microstructure-based Finite Element (FE) reliability modelling of ultrafine interconnects for future microelectronic products.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the views of moderators across a diverse and geographically broad range of online support groups about their moderator experiences and to explore both the personal benefits as well as challenges involved. Thirty-three patient moderators completed an online questionnaire which included a series of open-ended questions. Thematic analysis identified three themes: emergence, empowerment, nurturing. Several moderators declared their own diagnosis and for some, being able to share personal insights motivated them to establish the group and in turn offered validation. They felt empowered by helping others and learned more about the condition through accessing the “communal brain”. Some felt the group aided patients’ access to health services and their ability to communicate with health professionals while others worried about them becoming over-dependent. Moderators described needing to nurture their group to ensure it offered a safe space for members. Clear rules of engagement, trust, organisation skills, compassion and kindness were considered essential. Patient moderated online support groups can be successfully developed and facilitated and can be empowering for both the group member and moderator alike.  相似文献
