Control aspects of quantum computing using pure and mixed states

Steering quantum dynamics such that the target states solve classically hard problems is paramount to quantum simulation and computation. And beyond, quantum control is also essential to pave the way to quantum technologies. Here, important control techniques are reviewed and presented in a unified frame covering quantum computational gate synthesis and spectroscopic state transfer alike. We emphasize that it does not matter whether the quantum states of interest are pure or not. While pure states underly the design of quantum circuits, ensemble mixtures of quantum states can be exploited in a more recent class of algorithms: it is illustrated by characterizing the Jones polynomial in order to distinguish between different (classes of) knots. Further applications include Josephson elements, cavity grids, ion traps and nitrogen vacancy centres in scenarios of closed as well as open quantum systems.     

An introduction to the shift realization for finite dimensional continuous time systems

A new approach is presented for the realization of continuous-time finite dimensional linear systems. Using standard results on Laplace transforms our results are also used to present a new derivation of Fuhrmann's shift realization for rational matrix functions.     

Versatile high-repetition-rate phase-locked chopper system for fast timing experiments in the vacuum ultraviolet and x-ray spectral region

A novel light chopper system for fast timing experiments in the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) and x-ray spectral region has been developed. It can be phase-locked and synchronized with a synchrotron radiation storage ring, accommodating repetition rates in the range of ~8 to ~120 kHz by choosing different sets of apertures and subharmonics of the ring frequency (MHz range). Also the opening time of the system can be varied from some nanoseconds to several microseconds to meet the needs of a broad range of applications. Adjusting these parameters, the device can be used either for the generation of single light pulses or pulse packages from a microwave driven, continuous He gas discharge lamp or from storage rings which are otherwise often considered as quasi-continuous light sources. This chopper can be utilized for many different kinds of experiments enabling, for example, unambiguous time-of-flight (TOF) multi-electron coincidence studies of atoms and molecules excited by a single light pulse as well as time-resolved visible laser pump x-ray probe electron spectroscopy of condensed matter in the valence and core level region.     

Comparative Investigation of the Volatile Urinary Profiles in Different <Emphasis Type="Italic">Phodopus</Emphasis> Hamster Species

Stir bar sorptive extraction method was used for investigation of the urinary volatile profiles in male and female Phodopus campbelli and Phodopus sungorus hamsters. Additionally, female Phodopus roborowsky urinary profiles were characterized. A quantitative analytical approach allowed comparisons of 17 selected compounds in urine. Results showed that campbelli and sungorus species show similar urinary volatile profiles for males and females. Differences appeared only in concentrations. Several unique compounds, such as pyrazine derivatives, were found to be gender- and age-specific. P. roborowsky females exhibited a completely different urinary volatile profile from campbelli and sungorus females, featuring a unique set of substituted quinoxalines.
