Energy and exergy analyses previously performed by the authors for a single effect absorption refrigeration system have been extended to double effect vapor absorption refrigeration system with the expectation of reducing energy supply as well as an interest in the diversification of the motive power employed by HVAC technologies. The total exergy destruction in the system as a percentage of the exergy input from a generator heating water over a range of operating temperatures is examined for a system operating on LiBr–H2O solution. The exergy destruction in each component, the coefficient of performance (COP) and the exergetic COP of the system are determined. It is shown that exergy destructions occur significantly in generators, absorbers, evaporator2 and heat exchangers while the exergy destructions in condenser1, evaporator1, throttling valves, and expansion valves are relatively smaller within the range of 1–5%. The results further indicate that with an increase in the generator1 temperature the COP and ECOP increase, but there is a significant reduction in total exergy destruction of the system for the same. On the other hand, the COP and ECOP decrease with an increase in the absorber1 temperature while the total exergy destruction of the system increases significantly with a small increase in the absorber1 temperature. The results show that the exergy method can be used as an effective criterion in designing an irreversible double effect absorption refrigeration system and may be a good tool for the determination of the optimum working conditions of such systems. A numerical investigation of two-dimensional transient buoyancy-assisted laminar plane wall jet flow has been conducted. The governing equations in the stream function-vorticity formulation have been solved by alternating direction implicit (ADI) method. The parameters used are Grashof number 104 − 107, Prandtl number 0.01, 0.71, 7.1, 10.0 and 15.0 with a constant Reynolds number 400. The plate is considered at a higher temperature and the fluid is assumed to be initially at a uniform cold temperature. The streamline, u-velocity and the isotherm contours are presented at different time levels. Two polyamides (PAs) viz. PA 6 and PA 12 were selected for investigating the influence of water absorption on some physical, mechanical and tribological properties. Erosive wear studies on water treated and untreated samples were carried out at two impact angles viz. 30° and 90°. Tests on tensile strength of untreated and treated polyamides revealed that the water treatment resulted in enhancement for PA12 and reduction for PA 6. Exactly similar trends were reflected in their erosive wear performance also. The water absorption deteriorated the wear performance of PA 6 at both the angles, whereas the erosion wear behaviour of PA 12 improved at both the angles due to water absorption. The improvement was more significant at the angle of 30° rather than 90°. Chemical oxygen-iodine Laser (COIL) is one of the fast emerging high power laser source for near Infrared (λ=1.315μm) laser generation. The heart of the system is the singlet oxygen generator (SOG) which is a pumping source for this laser. A Jet type SOG with a novel approach was designed and fabricated. Singlet oxygen was taken out of the SOG at an angle of 40° thus avoiding the carry over of droplets, which is one of the major drawbacks of horizontal system. The preliminary results have been reported in our earlier publication. The present paper discusses the performance of this generator for various operational conditions viz. diluent's gas nitrogen / helium, basic hydrogen peroxide composition, generator pressure and gas velocity. A vast majority of the world's workers are employed in agricultural activities and are exposed to a wide variety of hazards. Since agriculture is primarily decentralised activity, it is often difficult to set and implement work safety norms and standards. While standards can be set for equipment manufactured in large factories, it is not easy to monitor its condition in use. For equipment fabricated in small workshops or by the farmers themselves, it becomes very difficult to ensure that design standards are adhered to especially when the users of equipment are hired labourers on daily wages.
This paper presents the results of an epidemiological study to determine the main causes of injuries among farmers in nine villages in the state of Haryana in Northern India. The study revealed that the largest number of traumatic injuries are caused by fodder cutting machines and threshers. The designs of these machines have been made safer using ergonomics principles. Expressions for the factor K to relate the total frictional head loss, average outlet operating pressure head, and the inlet pressure head of a multioutlet pipeline are developed. In the developed expressions, the factor K is a function of the number of outlets on different pipe diameters, combination of diameters, and position of the first outlet from the inlet. Values of the factor K obtained from the developed expressions are compared with constant values being taken as per existing practice. The comparison suggests using the developed expressions for accurate computation of the factor K for multioutlet pipelines especially comprising of two or more diameters. A natural rubber latex, an acrylonitrile–butadiene rubber latex, and their 50: 50 blends were exposed to an electron beam in air. A polyfunctional monomer, ethoxylated pentaerythritol tetraacrylate, was used as a crosslinking promoter. Cast films from the irradiated systems were characterized for their gel contents, swelling properties, and tensile strength. An increase in the radiation dose from 0 to 500 kGy resulted in increased crosslinking, as measured by an increase in the gel content and better swelling resistance.
