The increasing use of nanoparticles and their occurrence in the environment has made it imperative to elucidate their impact on the environment. Although several studies have advanced the authors’ understanding of nanoparticle–plant interactions, their knowledge of the exposure of plants to nanoparticles and their effects on edible crop plants remain meager and is often paradoxical. The aim of this study was to increase their knowledge on the effect of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles on eggplant seed germination and seedling growth. ZnO nanoparticles had a negative effect on the growth of eggplant in plant tissue‐culture conditions, as the growth of seedlings decreased with the increase in the concentration of ZnO nanoparticles. In contrast, ZnO nanoparticles enhanced eggplant growth under greenhouse conditions. The accumulation of ZnO nanoparticles in various parts of eggplant was observed through scanning electron microscopy of both plant tissue‐culture and greenhouse‐raised eggplant seedlings. Developing light weight polymer based composites dispersed with novel reinforcements which can function well in the presence of aggressive environments is an active research field in the materials engineering. Hence, in the current work, halloysite nanotubes (1 %, 2 %, 4 %, 6 %, 8 % and 10 % by weight) were reinforced into acrylonitrile butadiene styrene/polycarbonate blend and the role of reinforcing phases on the mechanical performance under aggressive environmental conditions has been evaluated. Hardness was measured as gradually increased in the composites with the increased content of the reinforcements. Impact strength of the composites was observed as increased in the composites up to 4 % reinforcement and further decreased. Increased strength was measured for the composite up to 2 % reinforcement. Ductility of the composites was decreased as reflected form the decreased % of elongation with the higher fraction of reinforcements due to induced brittleness. The composites were exposed to diluted sulfuric acid for 3 h and 6 h at 60 °C and then subjected to tensile loading. With the increased time of exposure, composites with 1 % and 2 % reinforcement exhibited relatively better performance.  相似文献

There have been two thrusts in the development of optical flow algorithms. One has emphasized higher accuracy; the other faster implementation. These two thrusts, however, have been independently pursued, without addressing the accuracy vs efficiency trade-offs. Although the accuracy–efficiency characteristic is algorithm dependent, an understanding of a general pattern is crucial in evaluating an algorithm as far as real-world tasks are concerned, which often pose various performance requirements. This paper addresses many implementation issues that have often been neglected in previous research, including temporal filtering of the output stream, algorithms' flexibility, and robustness to noise, subsampling, etc. Their impacts on accuracy and/or efficiency are emphasized. We present a survey of different approaches toward the goal of higher performance and present experimental studies on accuracy vs efficiency trade-offs. A detailed analysis of how this trade-off affects algorithm design is manifested in a case study involving two state-of-the-art optical flow algorithms: a gradient and a correlation-based method. The goal of this paper is to bridge the gap between the accuracy- and the efficiency-oriented approaches.  相似文献

The re-evaluation of previous and existing methods in materials processing is becoming ever more critical because of processing and starting materials cost factors. A study on the synthesis and properties investigation of hypereutectic Al–13.5Si–2.5Mg alloy reinforced with carbon chars using coconut shell as the organic precursor has been carried out. The low-cost, double compaction solid-state technique was used. Reinforcing the hypereutectic alloy with coconut shell char particles (size:<140 m) at 2 vol % and consolidating by reaction sintering at 600 °C in vacuum for 15 min, followed by near net-shape compaction at 250 MPa, increased the hardness of the alloy 6% while reducing its strength (UTS) by only 3%. The use of palm kernel shell char as the dispersed phase was found to yield identical results. At 2 vol % char, the mechanical properties, sintered density and dimensional changes were optimally found to be suitable for lightweight anti-friction electromechanical applications. Attempts to reinforce the alloy with 2 vol % coconut shell chars activated in CO2 reduced its strength in the range of 19 to 26% at different burn-off percentages. This is attributed to the higher amount of oxide products formed during the activation process. At 600 °C, formation of the brittle Al4C3 phase in the different sintered composites containing activated and unactivated chars was identified by X-ray studies. © 1998 Chapman & Hall  相似文献

Chromatic effects of radial gradient-index materials have been analyzed, and several important conclusions have been derived in terms of material dispersion data. The use of Buchdahl dispersion data, both for base glass materials and ion-exchange pairs, provides some simple relationships for chromatic aberration and helps in selecting suitable materials for producing achromatic radial gradient-index lenses.  相似文献

Thin films of ZnSe x CdS1–x (t 0.6 m) over the entire range of x, were deposited on glass substrates at two temperatures, T s (350 and 470 K) by vacuum evaporation. X-ray diffraction studies showed that all the films were polycrystalline in nature. Films prepared at 470 K were nearly stoichiometric. Grain size increased with substrate temperature, T s. The electrical conductivity and Hall measurements were carried out by d.c. van der Pauw technique. Hall effect studies/hot probe test showed that all the films were of n-type conductivity. Hall mobility increased with T s. In addition, mobilities increased with temperature in films of all compositions, indicating the dominance of grain-boundary scattering. Grain-boundary potentials were in range 0.03–0.06 eV.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Omeprazole is known to have an effect on Helicobacter pylori in vivo. One opinion is that H. pylori "migrates" from the antrum to the corpus in response to omeprazole therapy. METHODS: To determine whether H. pylori migrates in response to omeprazole, we assessed the presence of H. pylori in the antrum and corpus in duodenal ulcer patients receiving omeprazole for 4 wk. Culture and histological examination of antral biopsies (Genta stain) were performed before patients received omeprazole, at the end of therapy, and 4-6 wk later. The end points were presence or absence of H. pylori and the number of H. pylori colonies per biopsy. RESULTS: Seventy-two patients had H. pylori in both the antrum and corpus at entry and 4-6 wk after ending therapy. Three general patterns were prevalent at the end of omeprazole therapy: antrum- and corpus-positive (54%), antrum-negative and corpus-positive (24%), both antrum- and corpus-negative (21%), and one patient had antrum-positive with corpus-negative (1%). Evaluation of the number of colonies per biopsy in those who remained H. pylori-positive in both the antrum and corpus throughout showed that the number of H. pylori decreased in both the antrum and corpus during therapy (507 +/- 60 vs. 225 +/- 51, p < 0.01 and 415 +/- 58 vs. 290 +/- 46 0.1) for antrum and corpus, respectively, and tended to return to pre-therapy levels 4-6 wk later. The number of H. pylori in the corpus also decreased in the antrum-negative and corpus-positive group during therapy with omeprazole (433 +/- 87 vs. 185 +/- 61, p < 0.05). In most of the patients studied, the number of H. pylori in the corpus was less posttreatment than it was pretreatment. The decrease in H. pylori load was also reflected in the development of false-negative urea breath tests. CONCLUSIONS: Omeprazole is detrimental to H. pylori in both the antrum and the corpus; migration from the antrum to the corpus in response to omeprazole is a myth.  相似文献

A delay‐dependent criterion for the global asymptotic stability of a class of uncertain discrete‐time state‐delayed systems using various combinations of quantization and overflow nonlinearities is presented. The proposed criterion is in the form of a linear matrix inequality and, hence, computationally tractable. A numerical example highlighting the usefulness of the proposed criterion is given. Creating algorithms capable of predicting the perceived quality of a visual stimulus defines the field of objective visual quality assessment (QA). The field of objective QA has received tremendous attention in the recent past, with many successful algorithms being proposed for this purpose. Our concern here is not with the past however; in this paper we discuss our vision for the future of visual quality assessment research. We first introduce the area of quality assessment and state its relevance. We describe current standards for gauging algorithmic performance and define terms that we will use through this paper. We then journey through 2D image and video quality assessment. We summarize recent approaches to these problems and discuss in detail our vision for future research on the problems of full-reference and no-reference 2D image and video quality assessment. From there, we move on to the currently popular area of 3D QA. We discuss recent databases, algorithms and 3D quality of experience. This yet-nascent technology provides for tremendous scope in terms of research activities and we summarize each of them. We then move on to more esoteric topics such as algorithmic assessment of aesthetics in natural images and in art. We discuss current research and hypothesize about possible paths to tread. Towards the end of this article, we discuss some other areas of interest including high-definition (HD) quality assessment, immersive environments and so on before summarizing interesting avenues for future work in multimedia (i.e., audio-visual) quality assessment.  相似文献

The task of the robot in localization is to find out where it is, through sensing and motion. In environments which possess relatively few features that enable a robot to unambiguously determine its location, global localization algorithms can result in ‘multiple hypotheses’ locations of a robot. This is inevitable with global localization algorithms, as the local environment seen by a robot repeats at other parts of the map. Thus, for effective localization, the robot has to be actively guided to those locations where there is a maximum chance of eliminating most of the ambiguous states — which is often referred to as ‘active localization’. When extended to multi-robotic scenarios where all robots possess more than one hypothesis of their position, there is an opportunity to do better by using robots, apart from obstacles, as ‘hypotheses resolving agents’. The paper presents a unified framework which accounts for the map structure as well as measurement amongst robots, while guiding a set of robots to locations where they can singularize to a unique state. The strategy shepherds the robots to places where the probability of obtaining a unique hypothesis for a set of multiple robots is a maximum. Another aspect of framework demonstrates the idea of dispatching localized robots to locations where they can assist a maximum of the remaining unlocalized robots to overcome their ambiguity, named as ‘coordinated localization’. The appropriateness of our approach is demonstrated empirically in both simulation & real-time (on Amigo-bots) and its efficacy verified. Extensive comparative analysis portrays the advantage of the current method over others that do not perform active localization in a multi-robotic sense. It also portrays the performance gain by considering map structure and robot placement to actively localize over methods that consider only one of them or neither. Theoretical backing stems from the proven completeness of the method for a large category of diverse environments.  相似文献
