Although tissue polypeptide-specific antigen (TPS) has been described as a potentially useful serum marker of tumour activity in adult epithelial tumours, few data are available for childhood malignancies. Neuroblastomas and Wilms' tumours are the commonest types of solid malignancies found in the retroperitoneum of children. At this time, a widely used marker for Wilms' tumour is not available. Using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit, serum TPS levels in 23 children with neuroblastomas, nine with Wilms' tumours and 22 with benign tumours were evaluated to test the usefulness of the marker in identifying malignancies. Compared with healthy children (n = 110), the preoperative least-square means (LSM) of serum TPS were considerably elevated in both neuroblastoma (LSM = 209 U l(-1)) and Wilms' tumour (LSM = 235 U l(-1)), whereas values in benign tumours were only slightly elevated. Although the Wilms' tumours were associated with higher preoperative serum TPS levels, there was no statistically significant difference compared with neuroblastomas. Receiver operating characteristic analysis (ROC curves) showed a high sensitivity and specificity for both malignancies. Successful treatment resulted in decrease in TPS serum values. Serum TPS measurements in children presenting with abdominal masses can help in diagnosing the two commonest extracranial solid malignancies of childhood. Furthermore, TPS could acquire a pivotal role in monitoring therapy.  相似文献

We consider the scattering of light by single wood fibers both theoretically and experimentally. We describe the size and the shape distributions and the internal structure and chemical composition of the wood fibers. We have modeled the random shape of the hollow, cylindrical wood fiber by using multivariate lognormal statistics. We have computed wood-fiber absorption and scattering cross sections, asymmetry parameters, and scattering phase matrices in the ray-optics approximation. Finally, we have provided experimental results from angular scattering measurements for wood fibers and present what we believe is the first comparison between these measurements and ray-optics computations for Gaussian random wood-fiber models. In spite of the complicated internal structure of the wood fiber, our model together with the ray-optics treatment explains the scattering measurements surprisingly well.  相似文献

We consider the problem of estimating the geometric deformation of an object, with respect to some reference observation on it. Existing solutions, set in the standard coordinate system imposed by the measurement system, lead to high-dimensional, non-convex optimization problems. We propose a novel framework that employs a set of non-linear functionals to replace this originally high dimensional problem by an equivalent problem that is linear in the unknown transformation parameters. The proposed solution includes the case where the deformation relating the observed signature of the object and the reference template is composed both of the geometric deformation due to the affine transformation of the coordinate system and a constant amplitude gain. The proposed solution is unique and exact and is applicable to any affine transformation regardless of its magnitude.  相似文献

How endothelial cells (ECs) express the particular filopodial or lamellipodial form of the actin machinery is critical to understanding EC functions such as angiogenesis and sprouting. It is not known how these mechanisms coordinately promote lumen formation of ECs. Here, adhesion molecules (RGD peptides) and inductor molecules (BMP‐2 mimetic peptides) are micropatterned onto polymer surfaces by a photolithographic technique to induce filopodial and lamellipodial migration modes. Firstly, the effects of peptide microgeometrical distribution on EC adhesion, orientation and morphogenesis are evaluated. Large micropatterns (100 μm) promote EC orientation without lumen formation, whereas small micropatterns (10–50 μm) elicit a collective cell organization and induce EC lumen formation, in the case of RGD peptides. Secondly, the correlation between EC actin machinery expression and EC self‐assembly into lumen formation is addressed. Only the filopodial migration mode (mimicked by RGD) but not lamellipodial migration mode (mimicked by BMP‐2) promotes EC lumen formation. This work gives a new concept for the design of biomaterials for tissue engineering and may provide new insight for angiogenesis inhibition on tumors.  相似文献

A passive chilled beam is a source of natural convection, creating a flow of cold air directly into the occupied zone. Experiments were conducted in a mock-up of an office room to study the air velocities in the occupied spaces. In addition, velocity profiles are registered when underneath heat loads exist and the cool and warm air flows interact. Experimental laboratory study revealed that in the case of the underneath heat gains, even no upward plume was generated and the dummy only acted as a flow obstacle, having a significant effect on the velocity profile. Furthermore, in an actual occupied office environment, the thermal plumes and the supply air diffuser mixed effectively the whole air volume. The maximum air velocity measured was still below 0.25 m/s with the extremely high heat gain of 164 W/m2. The results demonstrate that analysis methods were the interaction of convection flow and jet are not taken into account could not accurately describe air movement and draught risk in the occupied room space.  相似文献

Extraction of the license plate region is the challenging first step in the license plate recognition system. We propose a novel feature fusion concept for plate extraction. The image-feature extraction process is modeled as a feature-detection problem in noise. The geometric features are probabilistically modeled and detected under various detection thresholds. These detection results are then fused within the Bayesian framework to obtain the features for further processing. Along with a probabilistic model, a pixels voting algorithm is also tested through threshold variation.  相似文献

Application of neuroscience methods to analyze and understand human behavior related to markets and marketing exchange has recently gained research attention. The basic aim is to guide design and presentation of products to optimize them to be as compatible as possible with consumer preferences. This paper investigates physiological decision processes while participants undertook a choice task designed to elicit preferences for a product. The task required participants to choose their preferred crackers described by shape (square, triangle, round), flavor (wheat, dark rye, plain) and topping (salt, poppy, no topping). The two main research objectives were (1) to observe and evaluate the cortical activity of the different brain regions and the interdependencies among the Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals from these regions; and (2) unlike most research in this area that has focused mainly on liking/disliking certain products, we provide a way to quantify the importance of different cracker features that contribute to the product design based on mutual information. We used the commercial Emotiv EPOC wireless EEG headset with 14 channels to collect EEG signals from participants. We also used a Tobii-Studio eye tracker system to relate the EEG data to the specific choice options (crackers). Subjects were shown 57 choice sets; each choice set described three choice options (crackers). The patterns of cortical activity were obtained in the five principal frequency bands, Delta (0–4 Hz), Theta (3–7 Hz), Alpha (8–12 Hz), Beta (13–30 Hz), and Gamma (30–40 Hz). There was a clear phase synchronization between the left and right frontal and occipital regions indicating interhemispheric communications during the chosen task for the 18 participants. Results also indicated that there was a clear and significant change (p < 0.01) in the EEG power spectral activities taking a place mainly in the frontal (delta, alpha and beta across F3, F4, FC5 and FC6), temporal (alpha, beta, gamma across T7), and occipital (theta, alpha, and beta across O1) regions when participants indicated their preferences for their preferred crackers. Additionally, our mutual information analysis indicated that the various cracker flavors and toppings of the crackers were more important factors affecting the buying decision than the shapes of the crackers.  相似文献

Nowadays wood should be of principal sources of biomass. This wood is transformed into chips in order to increase automatic operations and to decrease the technical effort needed at the energy conversion plant. Typical high quality chips, which are used to feed small woodchip boilers, vary in size from 10 × 10 × 5 mm to 15 × 15 × 8 mm. Chips that are relatively square and flat are easily conveyed, augured, and fed into the system smoothly. We are mainly interested in the raw material of inferior quality. A disc chipper test bench was constructed in our laboratory to study the chipping process in cutting conditions which are similar to those used in the industry. The test bench design allows many factors to be varied include cutting speed, feed per tooth, cutting angles, anvil height and cutting direction. In this paper, we attempt to understand the effect of several factors on chip size distribution. Four feeds per tooth, four cutting angles, two sharpness angles and three cutting speeds were chosen to cut wet logs of oak and fir wood, while the other factors remained constant. The results are similar for both oak and fir. The proportion of small chips decreases when we increase the feed per tooth, the cutting angle and the sharpness angle, whereas it increases when the cutting speed is increased. The feed per tooth and the cutting speed have a linear effect on the variations in the size distribution, while the cutting angle has a non-linear effect on these variations.  相似文献
