Persistence of conditioned flavor preferences is not due to inadvertent food reinforcement.

Almond preferences were produced by giving rats a mixture of almond and sucrose (Experiments 1-4) or saccharin (Experiment 4). A subsequent extinction procedure consisted of either repeated 2-bottle almond versus water tests (Experiment 1) or repeated exposure to almond alone (Experiments 2-4). The main independent variable was whether access to food following a session was given immediately, 30 min later, or 120 min later. No effect of extinction was found in any experiment. An important finding was that varying the delay until food access had no detectable effect. The future of health care reform: Implications of 1994 elections.

The Republicans took control of both houses of Congress in November of 1994 for the 1st time in 42 yrs. Although the magnitude of the Clinton Administration's proposed Health Security Act may well have triggered fears of overcontrol, it is clear that the delivery of psychological care will be changed dramatically by the combined forces of federal and state health reform. R. J. Resnick, President of the American Psychological Association, has appointed the Task Force on Education and Training for Work in Organized Delivery Systems to look at how psychological health care is provided in the new and evolving systems, and to examine how current training programs prepare new psychologists to practice in and around organized health care systems. Dr. Resnick is similarly concerned about standardization of training, training in nontraditional areas of competence, and increased federal recognition and funding of training in psychology. A monitoring, feedback, and triggering system for reproducible breath-hold MR imaging

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and clinical usefulness of high-resolution transvaginal duplex Doppler ultrasound in postpartum and post-abortion patients with excessive hemorrhage who are suspected of having residual trophoblast. METHODS: Forty-eight women with excessive hemorrhage referred for possible residual trophoblastic tissue were evaluated by transvaginal duplex Doppler ultrasonography. Based on two-dimensional imaging, the patients were divided prospectively into groups: women who had an empty uterus with a normal uterine cavity, those with a pure endometrial fluid collection and no echogenic foci, those who had a mixed endometrial fluid collection with foci of echogenicity, and those with intracavitary heterogeneous material with mixed echo patterns of fluid and solid components. In each group, Doppler studies were performed and the resistance index (RI) was calculated. The two-dimensional patterns and Doppler results were correlated with clinical and pathologic follow-up. RESULTS: Twenty-eight subjects had a normal uterine cavity and seven had a pure endometrial fluid collection; all were treated conservatively and none showed later clinical evidence of residual trophoblastic tissue. In 13 women, residual trophoblast was strongly suggested from the images of two-dimensional ultrasonography: Five showed an endometrial fluid collection with some echogenic foci, and eight exhibited intracavitary mixed echogenic material. All underwent curettage, and residual trophoblastic tissue was found in ten of the 13. The mean (+/- standard deviation) RI to flow in the myometrial arteries was 0.54 +/- 0.15 in women without residual trophoblast and 0.35 +/- 0.1 in those with residual trophoblastic tissue (P < .01). CONCLUSION: Our experience suggests that transvaginal duplex Doppler ultrasonography is an effective noninvasive method for evaluating patients with excessive postpartum and post-abortion hemorrhage who are suspected of having residual trophoblastic tissue. Its use enhances the positive preoperative diagnosis of residual trophoblastic tissue and may reduce unnecessary curettage procedures.     

Earvin "Magic" Johnson's HIV serostatus disclosure: Effects on men's perceptions of AIDS.

The effects of celebrity self-disclosure of HIV seropositivity on perceptions of HIV and AIDS were investigated. AIDS-related interest and knowledge measures were collected from 468 men before and after basketball star Earvin "Magic" Johnson's self-disclosure of HIV seropositivity. Increased interest in AIDS paralleled media coverage of the announcement, with the most substantial effects occurring within 2 wks. Perceived impact of the disclosure was greatest among African-American men and men who had not previously known someone with HIV/AIDS. Celebrity self-disclosure appears to affect perceptions through mechanisms similar to those involved in personally knowing someone infected with HIV. "Adolescent psychopathology: I. Prevalence and incidence of depression and other DSM-III—R disorders in high school students": Correction.

Reports an error in the original article by P. M. Lewinsohn et al ( Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 1993[Feb], Vol 102[1], 133–244). On page 140, in the Total Incidence columns in Table 4, the data for the Attention Deficit row should be switched with that for the Conduct row. Data were collected on the point and lifetime prevalences, 1-yr incidence, and comorbidity of depression with other Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-III-Revised (DSM-III-R) disorders in a randomly selected sample (n?=?1,710) of high school students at point of entry and at 1-yr follow-up (n?=?1,508). The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children was used to collect diagnostic information; 9.6% met criteria for a current disorder, more than 33% had experienced a disorder over their lifetimes, and 31.7% of the latter had experienced a 2nd disorder. High relapse rates were found for all disorders, especially for unipolar depression (18.4%) and substance use (15.0%). Female Ss had significantly higher rates at all age levels for unipolar depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and adjustment disorders; male Ss had higher rates of disruptive behavior disorders. Moderated analyses of longitudinal personality stability.

Private self-consciousness, personal agency, self-monitoring, and Openness to Experience were examined as possible moderators of differential stability of personality. Self-reports and observer ratings on the NEO Personality Inventory from 2 longitudinal studies were reanalyzed using moderated multiple regression; no consistent moderator effects were found. Furthermore, analyses of raw change and individual stability scores across observers failed to find significant agreement. In adults, changes in personality scores across occasions are apparently due chiefly to error of measurement, and subsets of individuals showing true changes cannot be reliably identified. It is concluded that stable individual differences in basic dimensions are a universal feature of adult personality. Future research on moderators of stability might be better focused on changes in attitudes, habits, roles, and relationships. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

Stability Testing of Clinical Samples

The stability program for clinical samples as presented is based on the ICH Tripartite Guideline for Stability Testing of New Drug Substances and Products and the same principles that the program followed throughout the development of a drug product. But the Guideline and the basic principles were adapted to deal with the specific problems encountered with clinical samples. The expiration dates represent minimum shelf lives, storage conditions, and storage periods, and the minimum shelf lives correspond the duration of the clinical trials in phases I to III. Shelf lives are established on the basis of stress and accelerated tests to provide all batches with an open expiration date. They are supported and confirmed by long-term tests conducted under the storage conditions presenting climate zone II, 25°C/60% RH. The self lives determined apply to all the batches of the relevant development stage, although only the batches in the final phase of development originate from a validated manufacturing phase. For different dosages, dosage forms, and packaging materials, the number of batches and analysis is reduced by scientifically based rationalization measures such as bracketing and matrixing. The stability results obtained with clinical samples are a major factor for achieving a comprehensive assessment of the quality of a finished medicinal product. In this way it is possible to establish a link between the quality of clinical batches for phases I-III and the quality of the finished drug product.
