The behavior of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (sPEEK) membranes in ethanol–water systems was studied for possible application in direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). Polymer membranes with different degrees of sulfonation were tested by means of uptake, swelling, and ethanol transport with dynamic measurements (liquid–liquid and liquid–gas systems). Ethanol permeability was determined in an liquid–liquid diffusion cell. For membranes with an ion‐exchange capacity (IEC) between 1.15 and 1.75 mmol/g, the ethanol permeability varied between 5 × 10?8 and 1 × 10?6 cm2/s, being dependent on the measuring temperature. Ethanol and water transport in liquid–gas systems was tested with pervaporation as a function of IEC and temperature. Higher IEC accounted for higher fluxes and lower water/ethanol selectivity. The temperature had a large effect on the fluxes, but the selectivity remained constant. Furthermore, the membranes were characterized with proton conductivity measurements. The proton diffusion coefficient was calculated, and a transition in the proton transfer mechanism was found at a water number of 12. Membranes with high IEC (>1.6 mmol/g) exhibited larger proton diffusion coefficients in ethanol–water systems than in water systems. The membrane with the lowest IEC exhibited the best proton transport to ethanol permeability selectivity. The use of sPEEK membranes in DEFC systems depends on possible modifications to stabilize the membranes in the higher conductive region rather than on modifications to increase the proton conductivity in the stable region. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Our study is to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model in the mouse. CD-1 mice had permanent MCAO for 24 h, or temporary occlusion for either 1 h followed by 23 h of reperfusion or 2 h of occlusion with 22 h of reperfusion. The infarct volume and blood-brain barrier disruption were smaller in the 1-h/23-h temporary occlusion than in either the 24-h permanent occlusion group or the 2-h/22-h temporary occlusion group (p<0.05). Our study demonstrates that blood flow, infarct volume, and blood-brain barrier disruption remain important markers of focal cerebral ischemia. 相似文献

The flight response of maleTrichoplusia ni was observed in a flight tunnel to a sex pheromone blend composed of six components:Z7–12Ac, 12Ac,Z5-12Ac, 11-12Ac,Z7-14Ac, and Z9-14Ac. The number of males reaching a 3000-g source of this blend was > 95%, equal to that observed to female glands and significantly greater than with the previously identified two-component blend (Z7-12Ac + 12Ac). In subtraction tests, all five-component blends, with the exception of the blend lacking the primary componentZ7-12Ac, and several four-component blends elicited similar peak levels of upwind flight, source contacts, and hairpencil displays to that observed with the six-component blend. We characterize the substitution of certain minor components for one another as a form of redundancy in the chemical signal and suggest that it contributes to response specificity and signal recognition in males. The results also support the concept that the full blend of components acts as a unit to influence male behavior at all phases of the response. Factors determining individual susceptibility to esophageal cancer or premalignant Barrett's epithelium are still largely unclear. An imbalance between phase I drug metabolism [e.g., cytochrome P450 (CYP)] and phase II detoxification [e.g., glutathione S-transferase (GST)] may contribute to the development of these diseases. Polymorphic variants in the CYP1A1 gene were described leading to increased levels of bioactive compounds, whereas polymorphisms in GST genes often resulted in impaired detoxification. We studied the frequencies of polymorphic variants in CYP1A1, GSTP1, GSTT1, and GSTM1 genes in 98 patients with Barrett's epithelium and 34 patients with esophageal cancer. The results were compared with those obtained from 247 healthy blood donors. DNA was extracted, and PCR-RFLP methods were used to detect genetic polymorphisms. Chi2 analysis, Spearman rank correlation, and Wilcoxon rank sum tests were used for statistical evaluation. Polymorphisms in CYP1A1, GSTM1, and GSTT1 occurred at an equal frequency in patients and controls. Occurrence of the polymorphic GSTP1b variant in the GSTP1 gene resulted in a significantly lower GST enzyme activity (P < 0.05), and GSTP1b was found significantly more often in patients with Barrett's epithelium (70%; P < 0.001) and patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma (76%; P = 0.005), as compared to healthy blood donors (41%). In conclusion, presence of the GSTP1b allele leads to lower GST enzyme activity levels and, consequently, impaired detoxification. This most important esophageal GST isoform may, therefore, contribute to the development of Barrett's epithelium and adenocarcinoma. 相似文献
