Application of meta-analysis in plant pathology: a case study examining the impact of fungicides on wheat yield loss from the yellow spot—septoria nodorum blotch disease complex in Western Australia

This work was done to demonstrate the opportunities provided by application of meta-analysis in plant pathology. It was a case study used to determine the effectiveness of foliar fungicides in minimising yield loss from a complex of yellow spot (Pyrenophora tritici-repentis) and septoria nodorum blotch (Stagonospora nodorum, teleomorph: Phaeosphaeria nodorum) (YS-SNB disease complex) on wheat in the northern grain-belt of Western Australia. Forty-seven datasets of experimental results from 14 growing seasons, using 18 varieties sprayed one to three times, predominantly with tebuconazole or propiconazole fungicides, were analysed. Across the datasets, the wheat yield gain from fungicide application was 297 kg ha^?1 with a 95 % confidence interval of 11.6 kg ha^?1. Significant yield gains resulted from single or multiple applications of fungicides. Both propiconazole and tebuconazole, increased yield of wheat affected by the YS–SNB disease complex, with yield gain from propiconazole being greater than that from tebuconazole. Yield response varied significantly among crop growing seasons. Meta-analysis was able to aggregate a large number of experimental results and answer important questions related to the variables that influenced those results; in this case the effectiveness of fungicides in minimising yield loss from the YS-SNB disease complex on wheat. It also identified areas where further research needs to be done. It is concluded that meta-analysis has the potential to contribute to similar analyses in other crop disease systems.

Studied the effect of client and therapist level of experiencing, beginning with the initial stage of psychological counseling, on early termination of therapy. Human subjects: 32 male and female Canadian adults (mean age 30–32 yrs) (personality disorders, neuroses, or interpersonal problems) (clients of therapists). 19 normal male and female Canadian adults (mean age 31 yrs) (graduate students) (therapists). Clients were subdivided into 2 groups: those who had terminated therapy (early or late), and those who had not terminated therapy. Ss were interviewed. Levels of experiencing were compared for the 2 groups of clients and for therapists who had counseled these clients. Tests used: The Global Assessment Scale, Psychiatric Symptom Index (F. Gold-silicon nanofiber synthesized by femtosecond laser radiation for enhanced light absorptance

In this study, we devised a new concept for the precise nanofabrication of Au-Si fibrous nanostructures using megahertz femtosecond laser irradiation in air and atmospheric pressure conditions. The weblike fibrous nanostructures of Au thin layer on silicon substrate, which are proposed for the application of solar cells, exhibit a specific improvement of the optical properties in visible wavelength. Varying numbers of laser interaction pulses were used to control the synthesis of the nanofibrous structures. Electron microscopy analysis revealed that the nanostructures are formed due to the aggregation of polycrystalline nanoparticles of the respective constituent materials with diameters varying between 30 and 90 nm. Measurement of the reflectance through a spectroradiometer showed that the coupling of incident electromagnetic irradiation was greatly improved over the broadband wavelength range. Lower reflectance intensity was obtained with a higher number of laser pulses due to the bulk of gold nanoparticles being agglomerated by the mechanism of fusion. This forms interweaving fibrous nanostructures which reveal a certain degree of assembly.

Antimicrobial activity of ascorbic acid alone or in combination with lactic acid on Escherichia coli O157:H7 in laboratory medium and carrot juice

The antimicrobial effects of ascorbic acid alone and in combination with lactic acid, against Escherichia coli O157:H7 in Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) broth and in carrot juice as a food model was investigated. In control samples, E. coli O157:H7 continued to growth from 3.98 ± 0.2 log CFU and reached to 8.88 ± 0.1 log₁₀ CFU after 8 h at 37° C; however, bacterial population was undetectable level in BHI in the presence of 0.4% ascorbic acid and 0.2% lactic acid. In carrot juice, E. coli O157:H7 continue to grow from initial population count of 4.41 ± 0.9 log₁₀ CFU to 8.75 ± 0.07 log₁₀ CFU at 37 °C for 24 h. Similarly, the bacteria population was undetectable when 0.2 or 0.4% ascorbic acid and 0.2% lactic acid applied. Our findings suggest the application of ascorbic acid, in combination with lactic acid, may have potential as preservative to inhibit the growth of E. coli O157:H7 in food.     

Inflammatory pseudotumour of the trachea: report of a case in an eight-year-old child

A polypoid inflammatory pseudotumour was diagnosed in the trachea of an eight-year-old child who presented with asthmatic symptoms. The tumour showed 80 per cent blockage of the lower trachea and consisted of proliferating spindly fibroblastic cells admixed with a variable number of inflammatory cells. The literature on childhood inflammatory pseudotumours is reviewed together with the differential diagnosis of other polypoid mesenchymal tumours of the trachea.     

Toxicity of Piper abyssinica seeds to Nubian goats

An investigation is described in which Nubian goats were given daily oral doses of Piper abyssinica seeds at 0.25; 1 and 5 g/kg body weight. The results of liver and kidney function tests were correlated with the clinical and pathological changes. In goats receiving the plant seed at 5 g/kg body weight/day, death occurred within 5-14 days and the main signs were bloated rumen, diarrhoea, dysponoea and ataxia. Enterohepatonephropathy was accompanied by increases in the activity of serum ALP and GGT, in the concentration of cholesterol, globulin, total lipids and urea and decreases in the level of albumin. Piper seed was toxic but not lethal to goats at doses of 0.25 and 1 g/kg body weight.     

Synthesis of water-soluble bile pigments bound to amine-ended monomethoxypolyethyleneglycol: thiol addition and attempted enzymatic reduction of a bilindione derivative

The water-soluble amide to an NH2-ended monomethoxypolyethyleneglycol (MPEG-NH2, molecular mass of about 2000) of the dipyrrinone xanthobilirubic acid (XBR, 1) and the bis-amides of mesobiliverdin-XIII alpha (MBV, 2) and mesobilirubin-XIII alpha (MBR, 3) have been prepared with high yields. Contrary to what is observed with biliverdin-IX alpha, 4, the enzymatic reduction of the mesobiliverdin derivative 2-MPEGA to the corresponding mesobilirubin 3-MPEGA by the soluble biliverdin reductase/NADPH system in pH 7.4 aqueous phosphate does not occur. In contrast, thiol addition to 2-MPEGA and to 4 under similar conditions is immediate, although this equilibrium is slightly less favourable for 2-MPEGA. These results enable us to discount the intrinsically low reactivity of 2-MPEGA towards thiols as the reason for its lack of enzymatic reduction, and suggest instead that this particular mesobiliverdin cannot fit properly into the enzyme binding site, either because of steric hindrance or the lack of the two propionic acid groups.     

Construction of underground works and tunnels in ancient Egypt

The Ancient Egyptian has an important role in developing the use of the underground especially in the construction of: tombs, warehouses, water passages, and tunnels which were used as accesses to tombs, worshipping rooms and the warehouses. These tunnels were constructed through rock cutting. The underground construction by the Ancient Egyptians was based upon engineering principles represented by the construction angle treatment of the different levels, the required height declination angles and the construction method itself, either by rock digging or stone construction. The great interest and attention given by the Ancient Egyptian to the eternity of the life after death provided the utmost impact to encourage a strong interest in the tomb architecture and in the philosophy of underground construction.     

An implantable closedloop asynchronous drug delivery system for the treatment of refractory epilepsy

In this paper, we present an implantable device for intra-cerebral electroencephalography (icEEG) data acquisition and real-time epileptic seizure detection with simultaneous focal antiepileptic drug injection feedback. This implantable device includes a neural signal amplifier, an asynchronous seizure detector, a drug delivery system (DDS) including a micropump, and a hybrid subdural electrode (HSE). The asynchronous detection algorithm is based on data-dependent analysis and validated with Matlab tools. The detector and DDS have a power saving mode. The HSE contacts are made of Platinum (Pt) encapsulated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Given the heterogeneity of electrographic seizure signals and seizure suppression threshold, the implantable device provides tunable parameters facility through an external transmitter to adapt to each individual's neurophysiology prior to clinical deployment. The proposed detector and DDS were assembled in ? 50 mm and ? 30 mm circular printed circuit boards, respectively. The detector was validated using icEEG recordings of seven patients who had previously undergone an intracranial investigation for epilepsy surgery. The triggering of the DDS was tested and a predefined seizure suppression dose was delivered ~16 s after electrographical seizure onsets. The device's power consumption was reduced by 12% in active mode and 49% in power saving mode compared to similar seizure detection algorithms implemented with synchronous architecture.
