Canelo wood is a highly valued native species in Chile that shows delicate marbling patterns with a pinkish soft silver luster. Due to its decorative qualities, canelo wood is dried for the manufacture of furniture and musical instruments. However, canelo wood lacks vessels cells that typically transport the water in hardwoods. Per its drying behavior, canelo wood is considered a transition species between hardwoods and softwoods. Therefore, this article reports drying schedules that were developed for drying 25-mm and 50-mm canelo lumber. Water-leaving radiance, measured just above the ocean surface, contains important information about near-surface or subsurface processes that occur on or below the deep ocean and coastal water. As such, retrieving seawater inherent optical properties (IOPs) is an important step to determining water type, subsurface light field, turbidity, pigment concentration, and sediment loading. However, the retrieval (or inversion) of seawater IOPs from just above water radiance measurements is a multiparameter nonlinear problem that is difficult to solve by conventional optimization methods. The applicability of the simulated annealing algorithm (SA) is explored as a nonlinear global optimizer to solve this multiparameter retrieval problem. The SA algorithm is combined with widely known semianalytical relations for seawater's IOPs to parameter invert these properties from simulated and measured water-leaving reflectance spectra. Furthermore, given the versatility of the SA algorithm, the scheme is extended to retrieve water depth from input reflectance data. Extensive tests and comparisons with in situ and simulated data sets compiled by the International Ocean-Color Coordinating Group are presented. Field data include reflectance spectra acquired with a handheld GER 1500 spectroradiometer and absorption measurements, performed with the AC-9 instrument on waters around Singapore's nearby islands. 相似文献

Alumina prepared by the sol-gel method, was impregnated with zirconia (5, 15 and 30 wt.%). Subsequently, the resulting Al2O3–ZrO2 supports were impregnated with 15% Ni to obtain the Ni/Al2O3–ZrO2 catalysts. The obtained catalysts were characterized by BET, SEM, XRD, H2-TPR and TPD- CO2. The catalytic activity was studied by means of dry reforming of methane (DRM) for syngas production. The catalysts displayed different physicochemical properties and trends of their catalytic activity as a function of the ZrO2 content in the mixed oxide supports. For instance, ZrO2 (5 wt %) in the catalyst, led to enhanced concentration of the medium strength basic sites and increased specific surface area, yielding thus the best performance in the DRM, with low carbon deposition after 36 h of reaction, compared with the other catalysts. This indicates that during the DRM reaction, this catalyst can provide more surface oxygen to prevent carbon deposits that could deactivate the catalyst. 相似文献

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the main species responsible for the alcoholic fermentation in wine production. One of the main problems in this process is the deficiency of nitrogen sources in the grape must, which can lead to stuck or sluggish fermentations. Currently, yeast nitrogen consumption and metabolism are under active inquiry, with emphasis on the study of the TORC1 signalling pathway, given its central role responding to nitrogen availability and influencing growth and cell metabolism. However, the mechanism by which different nitrogen sources activates TORC1 is not completely understood. Existing methods to evaluate TORC1 activation by nitrogen sources are time-consuming, making difficult the analyses of large numbers of strains. In this work, a new indirect method for monitoring TORC1 pathway was developed on the basis of the luciferase reporter gene controlled by the promoter region of RPL26A gene, a gene known to be expressed upon TORC1 activation. The method was tested in strains representative of the clean lineages described so far in S. cerevisiae. The activation of the TORC1 pathway by a proline-to-glutamine upshift was indirectly evaluated using our system and the traditional direct methods based on immunoblot (Sch9 and Rps6 phosphorylation). Regardless of the different molecular readouts obtained with both methodologies, the general results showed a wide phenotypic variation between the representative strains analysed. Altogether, this easy-to-use assay opens the possibility to study the molecular basis for the differential TORC1 pathway activation, allowing to interrogate a larger number of strains in the context of nitrogen metabolism phenotypic differences. 相似文献

Chiton are marine mollusks who use heavily mineralized and ultrahard teeth to feed on epilithic and endolithic algae on intertidal rocks. To fulfill this function, chiton teeth must be tough and wear‐resistant. Impressive mechanical properties are achieved in the chiton tooth through a hierarchically arranged composite structure consisting of a hard shell of organic‐encased and highly oriented nanostructured magnetite rods that surround a soft core of organic‐rich iron phosphate. Microscopic and spectroscopic analyses combined with finite element simulations are used to probe the ultrastructural features and uncover structure–mechanical property relationships in the fully mineralized teeth of the gumboot chiton Cryptochiton stelleri. By understanding the effects of the nanostructured architecture within the chiton tooth, abrasion‐resistant materials can be developed for tooling and machining applications, as well as coatings for equipment and medical implants. 相似文献
