The anatomical variations of two plants from the Nyctaginaceae family, Bougainvillea spectabilis and Bougainvillea glabra, were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy methods in this work. Bougainvillea is a dicotyledonous with defensive traits that can withstand extreme (hot and dry) settings; according to the findings, crystal inclusions in cells, woody spines, and an abnormal development pattern are all features that help them survive against predators and are unique to this species. The Bougainvillea plant's leaves are arranged in simple pattern, alternate to each other along stem having an undulate leaves edge and an oval form. The xylem and phloem, palisade, parenchyma midrib, spongy mesophyll, raphide crystal bundles, and trichomes were all visible when bracts and leaves were transversally sectioned and dyed with toluidine blue O (TBO). The presence of crystals was confirmed by a detailed examination of the transverse leaves by using bright-field and cross-polarizing microscopy. Dissecting microscopic examination showed that all the leaves revealed leaves venation pattern that had midvein, lateral veins areoles, and trichomes. Although trichomes have been identified on both sides, a closer look at a cleaned leaf dyed with TBO showed multicellular abundant trichomes on adaxial surface. Stomata complexes were typically found on the abaxial surface of the leaf according to epidermal peels. Present studies also showed that on adaxial side, stomata were lesser in number or were absent and also showed that the morphologies of the pavement cells on the adaxial and abaxial sides of the leaf differed. 相似文献

Parent material composition, particle disintegration by glaciers and lacustrine environment govern the geological development
and engineering characteristics of clay deposits in southern Saskatchewan. The pre-existing expansive clay minerals were preserved
due to the restrained leaching in the Regina Lake and the prevalent aridity in the area. The main objective of this paper
was to develop a fundamental understanding of the clay deposit for the use in the design and construction of civil infrastructure.
The results indicated the presence of expansive clay minerals in the deposit, with smectite accounting for 35% of the material.
The major exchangeable cation was found to be Ca2+ which accounted for more than half of the total measured cation exchange capacity of 40 (cmol(+)/kg). The most likely exchange
complex governing water adsorption of the clay was determined to be Ca2+-smectite. Alongside a high initial saturation (86%), this complex resulted in moderate volume changes in the clay. The swelling
pressure was fully developed within the first hour of the constant volume test. The corrected swelling pressure was determined
to be 120 kPa leading to an estimated heave of 36 mm in the surface layer of the deposit. The compression index and the swelling

Geological and seasonal weather variations govern the geohydrological properties of the Avonlea badlands in Saskatchewan, Canada. Three surface sediments exhibiting distinct lithologic variations were found: a steeply sloped and fissured sandstone; a mildly sloped and popcorn-textured mudrock; and a flat and eroded pediment. The fines content increased from the dry to the wet state, with contents of 17–33 % seen for sandstone, 4–98 % for mudrock, and 21–42 % for pediment. The water adsorption capacity was found to be highest for mudrock (w l = 96 % and w p = 47 %), followed by sandstone (w l = 39 % and w p = 31 %), and then by pediment (w l = 31 % and w p = 23 %). The soil water characteristic curves of sandstone and mudrock showed bimodal distributions with a low air entry value (6 and 9 kPa) pertaining to drainage through cracks and a high air entry value (160 and 92 kPa) associated with flow through the soil matrix. The pediment presented a unimodal soil water characteristic curve with a single matrix air entry value of 4 kPa. The saturated hydraulic conductivities for sandstone, mudrock, and pediment were measured as 8.5 × 10?6, 4.0 × 10?8, and 1.8 × 10?5 m/s, respectively. 相似文献

In this paper, a study on the vibrations of functionally graded cylindrical shells based on the Winkler and Pasternak foundations is presented. The shell equations are amended by inducting the moduli of the Winkler and Pasternak foundations. The wave propagation method is employed to solve the shell dynamical equations. In this article, we report our studies on the relaxor behavior of Ba(Ti1−xHfx)O3 ceramics, made with close compositions between 0.20 ≤ x ≤ 0.30, to locate the hafnium concentration boundary for the normal to relaxor crossover. X-ray diffraction followed by Rietveld refinement shows the occurrence of single-phase cubic structure for the synthesized Ba(Ti1−xHfx)O3 ceramics. Temperature and frequency dependence of the real (?′) and imaginary (?″) parts of the dielectric permittivity has been studied in the temperature range of 90-350 K at frequencies of 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 kHz. A diffuse phase transition accompanying frequency dispersion is observed in the permittivity versus temperature plots revealing the occurrence of relaxor ferroelectric behavior. The Tm verses Hf concentration plot shows a discontinuous jump and change in the slope at x = 0.23. Quantitative characterization based on phenomenological models has also been presented. The plausible mechanism of the relaxor behavior has been discussed. Substitution of Hf4+ for Ti4+ in BaTiO3 reduces the long-range polar ordering yielding a diffuse ferroelectric phase transition. 相似文献

The full potential linearized augmented plane wave method of density functional theory has been used to investigate the structural, electronic, magnetic and thermoelectric properties of cubic perovskites BaVO3 and LaVO3. The ferromagnetic ground state has been found to be stable by comparing the total energies of non-spin-polarized and spin-polarized calculations performed for optimized unit cells. For both compounds, the bond length and tolerance factor are also measured. From the band structures and density of states plots, it is found that both compounds are half-metallic. We found that the presence of V at the octahedral site of these perovskites develops exchange splitting through p-d hybridization, which results in a stable ferromagnetic state. The observed exchange splitting is further clarified from the magnetic moment, charge and spin of the anion and cations. Finally, we also presented the calculated thermoelectric properties of these materials, which show that half-metallic BaVO3 and LaVO3 materials are potential contenders for thermoelectric applications. 相似文献
