If gender differences in recovery from childhood sexual abuse (CSA) go unrecognized, treatment may be unsuccessful. Gender differences in abuse characteristics, outcomes, and recovery are described for 131 therapists with CSA histories. Female clinicians reported more problems with self-esteem relationships, trust, sex, and work than males. Female clinicians identified several recovery experiences as more important: relinquishing guilt, talking about the abuse, renegotiating family-of-origin relationships, personal therapy, reading or writing about their CSA, hospitalization, and CSA workshops. Therapists working with male victims need to be aware of possible gender differences in symptom report and effects of healing strategies. Two experiments examined the effects of general computer experience and age on library system search performance among novice library system users. Twenty younger adults (10 with high and 10 with low computer experience) and 20 older adults (10 with low and 10 with no computer experience) performed 10 search tasks of varying difficulty. Search success, syntax errors, database field specifications, keyword specifications, and use of Boolean operators were examined. Among younger novices, high computer experience was associated with slightly better performance than low computer experience. Among older novices, having some computer experience was associated with much better performance than no computer experience. Older computer users showed lower overall success rates, made more syntax and field specification errors, and demonstrated poorer understanding of Boolean logic and keyword matching algorithms than younger adults with similar computer experience. Implications for interface design and training interventions for novice on-line library system users are discussed.  相似文献

Over the past decade, the increasing availability of the World Wide Web has held out the possibility that the efficiency of scientific measurements could be enhanced in cases where experiments were being conducted at distant facilities. Examples of early successes have included X-ray diffraction (XRD) experimental measurements of protein crystal structures at synchrotrons and access to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and NMR facilities by users from institutions that do not possess such advanced capabilities. Experimental control, visual contact, and receipt of results has used some form of X forwarding and/or VNC (virtual network computing) software that transfers the screen image of a server at the experimental site to that of the users' home site. A more recent development is a web services platform called Science Studio that provides teams of scientists with secure links to experiments at one or more advanced research facilities. The software provides a widely distributed team with a set of controls and screens to operate, observe, and record essential parts of the experiment. As well, Science Studio provides high speed network access to computing resources to process the large data sets that are often involved in complex experiments. The simple web browser and the rapid transfer of experimental data to a processing site allow efficient use of the facility and assist decision making during the acquisition of the experimental results. The software provides users with a comprehensive overview and record of all parts of the experimental process. A prototype network is described involving X-ray beamlines at two different synchrotrons and an SEM facility. An online parallel processing facility has been developed that analyzes the data in near-real time using stream processing. Science Studio and can be expanded to include many other analytical applications, providing teams of users with rapid access to processed results along with the means for detailed discussion of their significance.  相似文献

This work discusses the development and calibration of the x-ray reflective and diffractive elements for the Soft X-ray Materials Science (SXR) beamline of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) free-electron laser (FEL), designed for operation in the 500 to 2000 eV region. The surface topography of three Si mirror substrates and two Si diffraction grating substrates was examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and optical profilometry. The figure of the mirror substrates was also verified via surface slope measurements with a long trace profiler. A boron carbide (B4C) coating especially optimized for the LCLS FEL conditions was deposited on all SXR mirrors and gratings. Coating thickness uniformity of 0.14 nm root mean square (rms) across clear apertures extending to 205 mm length was demonstrated for all elements, as required to preserve the coherent wavefront of the LCLS source. The reflective performance of the mirrors and the diffraction efficiency of the gratings were calibrated at beamline 6.3.2 at the Advanced Light Source synchrotron. To verify the integrity of the nanometer-scale grating structure, the grating topography was examined by AFM before and after coating. This is to our knowledge the first time B4C-coated diffraction gratings are demonstrated for operation in the soft x-ray region.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare the effects of static, sinusoidal and physiological load-profiles on wear of Al2O3–PTFE materials. This was an accelerated wear model of clinical relevance. In nine experiments, the peak load-levels were varied from 1 to 4 kN in a hip simulator with multi-directional kinematics and with bovine serum used as the lubricant. Systematic wear differences were checked using three sizes of femoral heads in each experiment. The Paul load-profile used was found to be more aggressive than sinusoidal, raising the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) wear-rates by 28%. The PTFE cups showed a very mild response to increased load magnitudes, only 11–20% increase evident in volumetric wear per 1 kN increase in load. One recommendation was that simulator wear-studies adopt a 0.25–2.5 kN Paul load-profile as their standard. An experiment with 0.84 kN constant-load also performed satisfactorily, with PTFE wear-rates actually higher than with the 1 kN sine and Paul load-profiles. Some wear anomalies were encountered due to the use of serum lubrication. Combinations of large head size, high load-magnitudes, the Paul load-profile and the high serum protein concentrations used in this study were at times contributing factors. Use of low-protein serum solution may be advisable for wear studies, not only to properly simulate the polymeric wear characteristics but also to minimize the degradation artifacts more prevalent in higher protein-concentrations.  相似文献

Solid freeform fabrication of aqueous alumina–poly(vinyl alcohol) (Al2O3–PVA) gel-casting suspensions was conducted using a computer-controlled extrusion apparatus fitted with a two-nozzle delivery system. The impact of casting parameters on the shear rate profiles experienced during deposition was evaluated via conventional flow analysis and computer simulations. In addition, the influence of these parameters on line resolution/uniformity, printability, and as-cast component properties was studied using laser profilometry, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Continuous printablity was achieved for tip diameters ranging from 0.254 to 1.370 mm for all mixing rates and suspension compositions studied. Printed lines were uniform with good edge definition, and line dimensions were independent of mixing rate for these process conditions. The Al2O3 volume fraction (φAl2O3) in the as-deposited layers depended on casting conditions and cross-linking agent concentration, where (φAl2O3 increased with decreased tip diameter and increased cross-linking agent concentration. The free-formed Al2O3 components exhibited uniform particle packing, with minimal macrodefects (e.g., slumping or staircasing) and no discernable microdefects (e.g., bubbles or cracking).  相似文献
