Learning LOGO: effects on learning BASIC and statistics

Abstract Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of a period of training in the use of the turtle graphics aspects of LOGO on both attitudes towards computers and the learning of BASIC and statistics. A group of 15 subjects spent 10 hours learning LOGO . Their performance on subsequent learning of BASIC was significantly better than that of a control group, but no differences were found in attitudes towards computers or in the learning of statistics.     

Reliable real-time robot operation employing intelligent forward recovery

Modern computer-controlled robots typically fail at their tasks whenever they encounter an error, no matter how minor. The physical environment of a typical assembly robot is too unstructured to benefit from conventional software approaches to reliability. We present an approach which interfaces the real-time operation of the robot with an intelligent subsystem that performs error analysis and forward recovery if a failure occurs. Our approach involves a special representation of the robot's program that efficiently tracks the robot's operation in real time and is easy to modify to include automatically generated recovery procedures.     

School psychologists' attributions for success and failure in consultations with parents and teachers.

Surveyed 234 practicing school psychologists routinely engaged in consultation to examine the types of consultation cases they would be most likely to view as successful or unsuccessful. Chi-square analysis of answers indicated a significantly greater number of attributions to the consultee in the failure condition in comparison with the success condition. Ss reported more failure in teacher consultation in comparison with parent or parent–teacher consultation. The issue of the accuracy of school psychologists' attributions of consultation success and failure is discussed as it relates to implications for consultation training and practice. A Gas Scintillation Proportional Counter for the X-Ray Astronomy Satellite SAX

A driftless gas scintillation proportional counter is described. The instrument has several advantages over conventional GSPCs especially for applications at low x-ray energies (~0.l - 30 keV) and small dimensions such as imaging focal plane detectors for x-ray telescopes or concentrators. The x-ray astronomy satellite project SAX has such a requirement and an imaging GSPC of this configuration is presented in this context.
