Urban spatial adjustments resulting from rising energy costs

Since the 1973 oil embargo, the cost of energy in the United States has risen dramatically. The effect on the spatial structure of cities due to higher energy cost is the subject of this paper. Within the framework of a continuous general equilibrium model, it is demonstrated that, contrary to some previous studies, cities might be expected to decentralize rather than to centralize.     

Analog VLSI for robot path planning

Analog VLSI provides a convenient and high-performance engine for robot path planning. Laplace's equation is a useful formulation of the path-planning problem; however, digital solutions are very expensive. Since high precision is not required, an analog approach is attractive. A resistive network can be used to model the robot's domain with various boundary conditions for the source, target, and obstacles. A gradient descent can then be traced through the network by comparing node voltages. We built two analog CMOS VLSI chips to investigate the feasibility of this technique. Design issues included the choice of resistive element, tessellation of the domain, programming of the network, and readout of the settled network. Both chips can be connected to a standard VME bus interface to permit their use as coprocessors in otherwise digital systems.A preliminary short version of this paper was presented at the 1992 ASILOMAR Conf. on Computers, Signals and Systems.     

Glycopeptide obtained from k-casein and its effect on protein assimilation

The products of restricted proteolysis of kappa-casein were separated by gel filtration. Intravenous injection of high- and low-molecular fractions substantially reduced the pentagastrin-stimulated acid secretion in the anesthetized rat stomach. Intermediate fractions had lesser physiological activity. One of the active fractions administered intraintestinally inhibited acid secretion and reduced the pentagastrin-stimulated secretion in rat weanling isolated stomach. All the active fractions inhibited the stimulated secretion in rats with a ligated vagus. It is concluded that the nervous system does not play a crucial role in the mechanism by which gastric acid secretion is inhibited by the products of restricted proteolysis of kappa-casein. Decreasing acid secretion in the stomach, glycopeptide provides for the conditions favouring the efficacy of protein utilization at an early age. It is suggested that the effect of glycopeptide obtained from kappa-casein on the process of assimilation is mediated via peptide hormones.

Conversion of linoleic acid hydroperoxide by soybean lipoxygenase in the presence of guaiacol: Identification of the reaction products

Linoleic acid hydroperoxide formed by soybean lipoxygenase was metabolized by the same enzyme in the presence of guaiacol. The products of this reaction included trihydroxyoctadecenoic acids, hydroperoxydihydroxyoctadecenoic acids, hydroxyepoxyoctadecenoic acids, dihydroxyoctadecenoic acids, hydroxyoctadecadienoic acids, and oxooctadecadienoic acids.     

Clinical effects of supplemental enteral nutrition solution in severe polytrauma

A clinical, bacteriological, serological and patho-anatomical study was carried out on 12 goats surviving the acute stage of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP), experimentally produced with Mycoplasma capricolum ssp. capripneumoniae (M. capripneumoniae), with the major aims of investigating the chronic stage of the disease and elucidating the possibility of a carrier state beyond the acute fulminant phase. The goats were killed 9, 16, 82 or 126 days after the onset of acute clinical signs. On day 9, clinical signs included low grade fever and persistent coughing. Thereafter, only intermittent coughing was recorded. Serum titres of complement-fixing antibodies to M. capripneumoniae were high at the period of fever but dropped thereafter. Post-mortem examination showed acute fibrinous pleuropneumonia on days 9 and 16, and chronic pleuropneumonia on days 82 and 126, including sequester formations in goats killed on day 126. Mycoplasma capripneumoniae was isolated on days 9 and 16 but not on later occasions. The study showed that goats recovered from acute CCPP may have lesions for a long time thereafter but provide no evidence of a carrier state among long-term survivors.     

Microbiological studies investigating mutagenicity of deep frying fat fractions and some of their components

In this study, the Salmonella/microsome mutagenicity test according to Ames et al. (Mutation Res. 31∶347, 1975) was performed in order to detect possible mutagenicity of oxidized deep frying fat fractions. Furthermore, the mono-, di-, tri- and tetrahydroxyoctadecanoic acids and the hydroperoxide of linoleic acid were investigated as model test substances. The Ames assay was carried out with and without metabolic activation including preincubation and liquid culture procedures as described by Mitchell (Mutation Res. 54∶1, 1978). The results show no mutagenic effects for the oxidized fractions of deep frying fats nor for the model test substances. At higher concentrations, however, limited test reliability resulted from direct toxic effects on bacterial growth.
