One way of computing the macroscopic behavior of a material sample with complex microstructure is to construct a finite element model based on a micrograph of a representative slice of the material. The quality of the results produced with such a model obviously depends on the quality of the constructed mesh. In this article, we describe a set of routines that modify and improve the quality of a 2D mesh. Most of the routines are guided by an effective element “energy” functional, which takes into account the shape quality of the elements and the homogeneity of the elements as determined from an underlying segmented image. The interfaces and boundaries in the image arise naturally from the segmentation process. From these routines, we construct a close-to-automatic mesh generator that requires only a few inputs, such as the linear sizes of the largest and smallest features in the micrograph.  相似文献

This work presents a technique that can completely and accurately identify measurement bias in cases where it is not possible to use the method of Rollins and Davis (1992, 1993) and where the method of Narasimhan and Mah (1987) fail to perform accurately. This technique makes use of information contained in the relationship between individual measurements and the corresponding nodal imbalance. The performance of this method is demonstrated on a problem from the literature that has been difficult for other methods to handle. In addition, this article discusses how the new technique can be used as a visual monitoring tool for identifying biased measured variables.  相似文献

A leaching method similar to the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) was designed and evaluated for testing of bulky wastes, such as discarded electronic devices. The objective was to meet the intent of the TCLP (same leaching solution, liquid-to-solid ratio and same leaching time) but to allow more representative and rapid testing. The procedure was evaluated by examining lead leaching from computer CPUs as a test case; disassembled CPUs were leached in their entirety (or close to entirety) in a large vessel using a drum rotator. The difference in rotation speed between the large-scale test and the TCLP was found to have no statistical impact on lead leaching. The lack of size reduction resulted in less reducing conditions than the standard TCLP (because of increased iron and zinc leaching), and this resulted in greater lead leaching. For electronic wastes with large amounts of steel, the large-scale procedure provides a more conservative estimate of TCLP lead leaching. The large-scale procedure greatly reduces sample processing effort but does increase the cost of analysis. Evaluation of this approach by the regulatory community is important as the CPUs tested here tended to leach lead at greater than the toxicity characteristic (TC) limit (5 mg/L) using the large-scale test, but less than the TC limit using the standard TCLP.  相似文献

The next generation of far infrared radiation detectors is aimed to reach photon noise limited performance in space based observatories such as SPICA and BLISS. These detectors operate at loading powers of the astronomical signal of a few Attowatt (10?18 W) or less, corresponding to a sensitivity expressed in noise equivalent power as low as $\mathrm{NEP} = 2\times10^{-20}\ \mbox{W}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ . We have developed a cryogenic test setup for microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) that aims to reach these ultra-low background levels. Stray light is stopped by using a box in a box design with a sample holder inside another closed box. Microwave signals for the MKID readout enters the outer box through custom made coax cable filters. The stray light loading per pixel is estimated to be less than 60×10?18 W during nominal operation, a number limited by the intrinsic sensitivity of the MKIDs used to validate the system.  相似文献

Current real-time volumetric scanners use a 2-D array to scan a pyramidal volume consisting of many sector scans stacked in the elevation direction. This scan format is primarily useful for cardiac imaging to avoid interference from the ribs. However, a real-time rectilinear volumetric scan with a wider field of view close to the transducer could prove more useful for abdominal, breast, or vascular imaging. In previous work, computer simulations of very sparse array transducer designs in a rectilinear volumetric scanner demonstrated that a Mills cross array showed the best overall performance given current system constraints. Consequently, a 94×94 Mills cross array including 372 active channels operating at 5 MHz has been developed on a flexible circuit interconnect. In addition, the beam former delay software and scan converter display software of the Duke volumetric scanner were modified to achieve real-time rectilinear volumetric scanning consisting of a 30-mm×8-mm×60-mm scan at a rate of 47 volumes/s. Real-time rectilinear volumetric images were obtained of tissue-mimicking phantoms, showing a spatial resolution of 1 to 2 mm. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) intensities for individual Au nanospheres, nanoshells, and nanosphere and nanoshell dimers coated with nonresonant molecules are measured, where the precise nanoscale geometry of each monomer and dimer is identified through in situ atomic force microscopy. The observed intensities correlate with the integrated quartic local electromagnetic field calculated for each specific nanostructure geometry. In this study, we find that suitably fabricated nanoshells can provide SERS enhancements comparable to nanosphere dimers.  相似文献

Bodycote researchers have successfully demonstrated that a T6 heat treatment can be integrated with Densal^R, a proprietary, aluminum specific, hot isostatic pressing (HIP) process. In this combined operation, at least a portion of the solution heat treatment is conducted at elevated pressure. During development, two issues, adiabatic cooling during depressurization and a possible variation in the kinetics of homogenization resulting from conducting the solution heat treat at elevated pressure were perceived as factors which could alter the heat treat response from that seen in conventional processing.This paper reviews the results of experiments performed to Al-Si-Mg (A356.0) castings subjected to both combined and conventional processing routes. Results indicate that the combined HIP and heat treat process is an efficient means of achieving a microstructure characteristic of a conventionally T6 processed material while eliminating porosity within the casting. Further, the fatigue life of an A356.0 casting processed using the combined cycle can be improved by more than an order of magnitude over the as-cast and T6 treated component.  相似文献

A new approach has been developed to reduce multiple proteinstructures obtained from NMR structure analysis to a smallernumber of representative structures which still reflect thestructural diversity of the data sets. The method, based onthe clustering of similar structures, has been tested in thehomology model building of the structure of Sox-5, a sequence-specificDNA-binding protein belonging to the high mobility group (HMG)nuclear proteins family. Sox (SRY box) genes are the autosomalgenes related to the sex-determining SRY, Y chromosomal gene.The Sox-5 protein, encoded by one of the SRY-related genes,displays a 29% sequence identity with the HMG1 B-box domainwhose structure, determined previously by NMR, has been usedin our study to predict the structure of Sox-5. Two independentensembles of HMG1 structures, each represented by closely relatedcoordinate sets, were used. Nine representative structures forHMG1 were subsequently selected as starting points for the modellingof Sox-5. The model of the protein shows close similarity tothe HMG1 fold, with differences at the secondary structure levellocated mainly in a-helices 1 and 3. A left-handed, three residueper turn polyproline II helix, forming a conserved polyprolineII/-helix supersecondary motif, was identified in the N-terminalregion of Sox-5 and other HMG boxes.  相似文献
