The polymerase chain reaction was employed to correlate Salmonella serovars isolated from fecal material of greyhounds suffering from gastroenteritis with those isolated from the diet fed to the greyhounds prior to onset of diarrhea. Kennels around the Abilene, Kansas, area were contacted and supplied with materials needed to collect a portion of the diet each day. With the onset of diarrhea, the kennels were instructed to ship the fecal material and diet from the previous 10 days to the laboratory for testing. Forty-one fecal samples and corresponding diets were screened for Salmonella, Clostridium perfringens, Campylobacter jejuni, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus intermedius, and pathogenic (piliated) Escherichia coli by direct culture using standard procedures. The fecal material was also screened for coronavirus and parvovirus using electron microscopy. Thirty-five "normal" fecal samples were screened for all of the above mentioned microorganisms as a control. In addition, the fecal material was screened for E. coli verotoxins I and II and clostridial enterotoxins. A total of 61 Salmonella isolates were recovered from the 41 samples of feces and diet submitted for testing; 31 were recovered from the feces and 30 from the diet. Four Salmonella isolates were recovered from the normal fecal samples. Results obtained by PCR, plasmid profiles, antigenic analysis, and antibiogram profiles indicated that 16 of the 31 isolates recovered from the fecal material were the same strain as that recovered from the diet. 相似文献

Autonomous agents are intelligent software programs. Typically, agents are situated in an environment. Repeatedly, they sense their environment, engage in some decision making whereby they select actions, and execute their actions, which, in turn, impact their environment. Moreover, in most cases, the environment contains a number of such agents whose actions typically mutually affect one another. This interdependence arises because the different agents, with their own aims and objectives, must operate in a common environment that has finite resources and capabilities. Depending on the dependency's nature, several different types of social interaction occur between the agents, including cooperation, coordination, and negotiation. Assessing a patient's access to potentially lethal means for suicide and taking steps to restrict access to means are common expectations for reasonable outpatient management of suicidal patients. Although scientific evidence supports means restriction as a suicide prevention strategy, means restriction continues to be infrequently utilized by clinicians, in large part because of the general lack of available training and guidance. The present article reviews the conceptual basis and empirical evidence for means restriction, discusses common barriers to means-restriction counseling, and provides practical procedures and tools (e.g., the means receipt, the crisis support plan) for accomplishing means-restriction counseling in routine clinical practice. The proton/electron telescope (PET) on SAMPEX (Solar, Anomalous, and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer) is designed to provide measurements of energetic electrons and light nuclei from solar, Galactic, and magnetospheric sources. PET is an all solid-state system that will measure the differential energy spectra of electrons from ~1 to ~30 MeV and H and He nuclei from ~20 to ~300 MeV/nucleon, with isotope resolution of H and He extending from ~20 to ~80 MeV/nucleon. As SAMPEX scans all local times and geomagnetic cutoffs over the course of its near-polar orbit, PET will characterize precipitating relativistic electron events during periods of declining solar activity, and it will examine whether the production rate of odd nitrogen and hydrogen molecules in the middle atmosphere by precipitating electrons is sufficient to affect O3 depletion. In addition, PET will complement studies of the elemental and isotopic composition of energetic heavy (Z >2) nuclei on SAMPEX by providing measurements of H, He, and electrons. A survey of current network policy languages is presented. Next, a summary of the techniques for detecting policy conflicts is given. Finally, a new language, path-based policy language, which offers improvements to these is introduced. Previous network policy languages vary from the very specific, using packet filters at the bit level, to the more abstract where concepts are represented, with implementation details left up to individual network devices. As background information a policy framework model and policy-based routing protocols are discussed. The PPL's path-based approach for representing network policies is advantageous in that quality of service and security policies can be associated with an explicit path through the network. This assignment of policies to network flows aids in new initiatives such as integrated services. The crosstalk performance of an arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) multiplexer or demultiplexer is primarily caused by random optical phase errors introduced in the arrayed waveguides. Because the layout of waveguides on a wafer is patterned via photomask through the photolithography process, the resolution of a photomask has a direct influence on the phase errors of an AWG. The paper presents a theoretical analysis on the phase error caused by photomask resolution and other basic design parameters. Both calculation and measurement results show that a high-resolution photomask (better than 25 nm) is a critical requirement to produce low-crosstalk (less than -30 dB) AWG demultiplexers. We also investigate the effect of nonideal power distribution in the arrayed waveguides because it contributes considerable phase errors when material impurity is not well controlled during wafer fabrication. We have systematically studied the well number dependence of the linewidth enhancement factor in strained quantum-well (QW) lasers and have demonstrated experimentally that the linewidth enhancement factor can be reduced from /spl sim/9.4 to /spl sim/2.0 by increasing the number of compressively strained QW's from 2 to 8.
