Mechanical and physical properties of epoxy composites reinforced by vapor grown carbon nanofibers

Epoxy/vapor grown carbon nanofiber composites (VGCF) with different proportions of VGCF were fabricated by the in situ process.The VGCFs were well dispersed in both of the low and high viscosity epoxy matrices, although occasional small aggregates were observed in a high viscosity epoxy of 20 wt.%. The dynamic mechanical behavior of the nanocomposite sheets was studied. The storage modulus and the glass transition temperature (T_g) of the polymer were increased by the incorporation of VGCFs.The electrical and mechanical properties of the epoxy-VGCFs nanocomposite sheets with different weight percentages of VGCFs were discussed. The results were that both had maximum tensile strength and Young’s modulus at 5 wt.% for both materials and reduced the fracture strain with increasing filler content. The electrical resistivity was decreased with the addition of filler content. Mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of low viscosity epoxy composites were resulted better than that of the high viscosity composites.     

Stress-corrosion cracking of aged AlCuMg alloys in NaCl solution

Pitting potentials and stress corrosion life-times of AlCuMg alloys (mainly 2024 alloy) with various ageing structures have been measured in a de-aerated 1M NaCl solution under conditions of controlled potential. The aged alloy, which has the higher susceptibility to stress-corrosion cracking, showed two pitting potentials corresponding to pitting at the grain boundaries and within the grains. The susceptibility of the alloys to intergranular stress-corrosion cracking occurred at potentials above the pitting potential of the grain boundaries. The intergranular stress-corrosion cracking is caused not by the dissolution of the grain boundary precipitates (S phase) but by the pitting dissolution of the solute-denuded zones along the grain boundaries. Aspects of SCC in the alloys are similar to those in the Al-4%Cu alloy without Mg.     

Waveguide polarization-independent optical circulator

We fabricated a new type of waveguide polarization-independent optical circulator which does not need a polarization-beam splitter. The circulator is based on a non-reciprocal Mach-Zehnder interferometer which consists of two waveguide Faraday rotators, two thin-film half-waveplates and two planar lightwave circuit-type 3-dB couplers. The fabricated circulator provides a 14.0-23.7-dB isolation and a 3.0-3.3 dB insertion loss at λ=1.55 μm. This circulator presents a new possibility for developing non-reciprocal devices in the field of integrated optics     

Suppression of inducible nitric oxide synthase expression and amelioration of lipopolysaccharide-induced liver injury by polyphenolic compounds in Eucalyptus globulus leaf extract

Eucalyptus leaf extract (ELE) is rich in hydrolyzable tannins. We examined the effects of ELE and its constituents on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced liver injury in mice. Mice fed a diet supplemented with 1% ELE were intraperitoneally administered LPS. Six hours later, the serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities were significantly lower in the ELE-supplemented mice than in the controls; LPS-induced hepatic inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression was also suppressed. ELE lowered LPS-stimulated iNOS expression in cultured RAW 264.7 macrophages. Furthermore, the aglycones of hydrolyzable tannins, gallic acid (GA) and ellagic acid (EA), inhibited iNOS induction to a greater extent than did ELE (15-fold higher). When mice were fed a 1% GA or EA diet, the increase in the serum ALT and AST activities and hepatic iNOS expression in response to the LPS challenge were significantly attenuated. Thus, hydrolyzable tannins in ELE ameliorate LPS-induced liver injury.     

Secondary Resistance Identification of an Induction-Motor Applied Model Reference Adaptive System and Its Characteristics

Induction-motor torque is not accurately controlled when the estimated secondary resistance of an induction-motor model in a vector controller differs from the true secondary resistance. An algorithm which identifies the secondary resistance on-line is developed. The motor operating condition for secondary resistance identification, the stable identifier organization, and the experimental investigation confirming the identification algorithm performance are presented. The algorithm is based on the theory of model reference adaptive systems (MRAS). The proposed algorithm stably identifies the secondary resistance under any load and any speed when a sinusoidal signal is injected into the flux axis primary current. The vector controller adopting this algorithm controls motor torque accurately under any load and any speed.     

Therapeutic effects of prostacyclin analog on crescentic glomerulonephritis of rat

Prostacyclin (PGI2) is known to have a relaxative action on vascular smooth muscle, an inhibitory action against platelet activation and neutrophil function. Previous studies showed the preventive effects of PGI2 on lupus nephritis and Thy-1 nephritis, although the mechanism has not been clarified. Glomerular endothelial expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is up-regulated in experimental and human glomerular diseases, and is known to facilitate leukocyte infiltration into the glomeruli, which ultimately induces the various glomerular injuries. In the present study, we evaluated the therapeutic effects of PGI2 on a rat model for crescentic glomerulonephritis and investigated its putative mechanism in relation to ICAM-1-mediated leukocyte recruitment. Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats were injected with nephrotoxic serum and received continuous intraperitoneal infusion of PGI2. PGI2 dramatically decreased proteinuria (123.0 +/- 18.8 vs. 31.6 +/- 4.5), crescent formation and deposition of fibrinogen in the glomeruli, while the deposition of rabbit IgG, rat IgG and rat C3 along the capillary walls was not changed. Furthermore, intraglomerular expression of ICAM-1 and infiltration of macrophages were significantly suppressed by administration with PGI2. In contrast, influx of CD4 or CD8 positive cells was not altered. The present results suggest that PGI2 shows the preventive effects on experimental crescentic glomerulonephritis by inhibiting intraglomerular coagulation and ICAM-1-mediated macrophage-glomerular endothelial cell adhesive pathway.     

Assessment of disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis using magnetic resonance imaging: quantification of pannus volume in the hands

We attempted to assess whether pannus volume measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used as an indicator of disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Eleven women (mean age 46 yr) with uncontrolled RA were studied for 1 yr. Pannus formation in both hands was quantified using MRI at the start of the study, and at 6 and 12 months thereafter. The volume of enhancing pannus (VEP) was compared with changes in the radiological scores, grip strength, joint tenderness counts, joint swelling counts, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and serum C-reactive protein (CRP). Patients were classified into three groups based on VEP changes between 0 and 12 months: unchanged (n = 2), decreased (n = 6) and increased (n = 3). VEP at 6 months and at 12 months differed significantly between the three groups. No statistically significant differences were found between the groups in radiographic scores, physical parameters or laboratory parameters despite the fact that some of these parameters changed in the direction indicated by the changes in VEP. VEP can be used as a new indicator to assess disease activity in individual RA patients and, using this parameter, treatment outcome can be assessed in fewer subjects than with traditional measures.
