The potential for liquefaction triggering of a soil under a given seismic loading is measured herein by probability of liquefaction. The first order reliability method (FORM) is used to calculate reliability index, from which the probability of liquefaction is obtained. This approach requires the knowledge of parameter and model uncertainties; the latter is the focus of this paper. An empirical model for determining liquefaction resistance based on cone penetration test (CPT) is established through “neural network learning” of case histories. This resistance model along with a reference seismic loading model forms a performance function or limit state for liquefaction triggering analysis. Within the framework of the FORM, the uncertainty of this limit state model is characterized through an extensive series of sensitivity studies using Bayesian mapping functions that have been calibrated with a set of quality case histories. In addition, a deterministic model for assessing liquefaction potential in terms of factor of safety is presented, and the probability-safety factor mapping functions for estimating the probability of liquefaction for a given factor of safety in the absence of the knowledge of parameter uncertainty are also established. Examples are presented to illustrate the proposed methods.  相似文献

A scheme for creating metal-coated vertical mirrors in silicon, along with an integrated transparent package lid for assembling, packaging, and testing microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices is presented. Deep reaction ion etching (DRIE) method described here reduces the loading effect and maintains a uniform etch rate resulting in highly vertical structures. A novel self-masking lithography and liftoff process was developed to ensure that the vertical mirrors undergo uniform metallization while leaving a transparent window for optical probing. Front side of a Si wafer was shallow-etched using DRIE to define an eventual optical window. This surface was then anodically bonded to a Pyrex wafer. Backside Si was then patterned to define thin channels around the optical window. These channels were vertically etched using DRIE, after which the unattached portions of the window region were removed. Negative photoresist was spun on the remaining vertical structures and the stack was exposed from the Pyrex side using Si structures as a self-mask. Subsequent metal sputtering and liftoff results in the metallized top and mirror sidewalls while leaving a clear window. These integrated mirrors and lids are then bonded to the active MEMS mirrors. This paper presents an innovative approach for a probabilistic analysis of liquefaction hazard at a given site in a specified exposure time based on the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Seismic Hazard Maps data. The foundation of this new approach is a simplified procedure for obtaining a joint distribution of peak ground surface acceleration (amax) and moment magnitude of earthquake (Mw) at any given locality in the United States based on the USGS website data. The developed joint probability distribution of amax and Mw can be readily combined with the conditional probability of liquefaction (given a pair of amax and Mw) to obtain the total probability of liquefaction at a given site in a specified exposure time. Detailed formulation of the new approach is presented and demonstrated with examples.  相似文献

In this study, interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogel based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) networking with polyacrylic acid (PAA) were prepared by a non‐conventional emulsion method without any added crosslinker, using benzoyl peroxide as initiator and sodium chloride (NaCl) as additive. The IPN hydrogel was characterized by using Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometry, Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). (PVA‐co‐PAA)/NaCl normal IPN hydrogel (H) were fabricated into hydrogel microspheres (HM) by modified emulsion crosslinking method using glutaraldehyde‐saturated toluene as crosslinker and were loaded with Diltiazem hydrochloride (DL). The IPN hydrogel showed more swelling in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF). (PVA‐co‐PAA)/NaCl HM formulation A1 showed comparatively higher DL entrapment (79%) and better control over DL release up to 24 h. By comparing antihypertensive activity of DL loaded two formulations in normotensive rats, HM formulation A1 found more effective in reducing blood pressure to 40.1%. The experimental results demonstrated that (PVA‐co‐PAA)/NaCl HM had the greater potential than normal hydrogel to be used as a drug carrier. A single use of the prepared hydrogel microsphere system of DL can effectively control hypertension in rats. The system holds promise for clinical studies. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Energy levels, oscillator strengths, and transition probabilities are calculated for the lowest-lying 165 energy levels of Fe XI using configuration-interaction wavefunctions. The calculations include all the major correlation effects. Relativistic effects are included in the Breit–Pauli approximation by adding mass-correction, Darwin, and spin–orbit interaction terms to the non-relativistic Hamiltonian. For comparison with the calculated ab initio energy levels, we have also calculated the energy levels by using the fully relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac–Fock method. The calculated results are in close agreement with the National Institute of Standards and Technology compilation and other available results. New results are predicted for many of the levels belonging to the 3s3p43d and 3s3p33d2 configurations, which are very important in astrophysics, relevant, for example, to the recent observations by the Hinode spacecraft. We expect that our extensive calculations will be useful to experimentalists in identifying the fine structure levels in their future work.  相似文献
