Structure and properties of refractories based on zirconia stabilized by gadolinium oxide

The structure and properties of solid solutions and the chemical compound Gd₂Zr₂O₇ in the Gd₂O₃ - ZrO₂ system are investigated. Sintering of the initial mixture is studied and the optimum concentration of the stabilizing additive is determined for the production of heat-resistant articles from granular mixtures based on ZrO₂ stabilized by Gd₂O₃ and fired at 1750°C. Direct volume display devices

Direct volume display devices (DVDDs), which display 3D volumes and surfaces in a volume by providing depth rather than depth cues, are discussed. The transport theory model is used to illustrate why DVDDs are best able to support fast presentation from arbitrary directions. The technology underlying various DVDDs is described. Specifically, the design and operation of the OmniView rotating-screen DVDD are examined. The air-traffic-control/air-tactics-analysis, satellite orbit mechanics, and time-critical target prosecution applications of DVDDs are also discussed     

Frequency transfer function of an opto-pneumatic detector

An example of an opto-pneumatic detector's (OPD) frequency transfer function is presented for the development of an opto-pneumatic interface. The theoretical model is tested through experiments in the laboratory on a real OPD prototype. In this way many of the model's parameters are studied and evaluated, such as the dimensions of the gas chamber, the thickness of the absorbent body, and the load of the OPD. The results obtained are good and show the utility of the studies described here.     

The cGMP modulator, LY83583 alters oxygen metabolites differently in cultured endothelial cells and isolated neutrophilic granulocytes

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of one abrasive cleaner, one non-abrasive cleaner and one non-abrasive alcohol-based cleaner on the lens parameter stability of the NOVALENS. Twenty-four lenses, all NOVALENS material of identical design, were cleaned 100 times each. Eight lenses were cleaned with MiraFlow (CIBA Vision), eight lenses with Optic-Free Daily Cleaner and eight lenses with the Gas Permeable Daily Cleaner (PBH). The base curve radius, center thickness and power were verified immediately before, immediately after and (per manufacturer's recommendation) 4 hours after cleaning at baseline, 25, 50, 75 and 100 cleanings. Lens toricity of approximately 0.50D was found with all three cleaners after 100 cleanings. No change in lens power or center thickness was found. It was concluded that extreme care must be taken in handling the NOVALENS due to the potential of induced warpage.     

All-optical wavelength conversion by semiconductor opticalamplifiers

Following a brief introduction to the applications for wavelength conversion and the different available conversion techniques, the paper gives an in depth analysis of cross gain and cross phase wavelength conversion in semiconductor optical amplifiers. The influence of saturation filtering on the bandwidth of the converters is explained and conditions for conversion at 20 Gb/s or more are identified. The cross gain modulation scheme shows extinction ratio degradation for conversion to longer wavelengths. This can be overcome using cross phase modulation in semiconductor optical amplifiers that are integrated into interferometric structures. The first results for monolithic integrated interferometric wavelength converters are reviewed, and the quality of the converted signals is demonstrated by transmission of 10 Gb/s converted signals over 60 km of nondispersion shifted single mode fiber     

H∞ control versus disturbance-observer-basedcontrol

In the motion control field, a disturbance observer-based disturbance canceling control is often used as a robust control methodology. However, this method is nothing more than an alternative design of an integral controller, and the robust stability issue cannot be directly accounted for. In this paper, an extended H_∞ control scheme is proposed as a new robust motion control method which achieves the disturbance cancellation ability and guarantees robust stability automatically     

Analogue micropowered log-domain tone controller for auditoryprostheses
