Breed differences in the histochemical properties of the M. pubo-ischio-femoralis pars medialis myofibre of domestic cocks

1. Histochemical properties of M. pubo-ischio-femoralis pars medialis (PIF muscle) were compared in 7 breeds of cocks. This muscle was largely composed of Type I fibres and their transitional form (Type I tr). Type IIA fibres were observed in the cranial part. 2. The weight and cross-sectional area of the PIF muscle increased with increasing body weight. However, the relative muscle development to body weight differed among the 7 breeds. 3. A quarter of Type I fibres were of the transitional variety in bantam fowls. Conversely, few, if any, Type I tr fibres were observed in the large breeds where the muscle was poorly developed. 4. As the histochemical properties of Type I fibres made an effective response to the different body weights and the relative PIF muscle development among breeds, it was concluded that PIF muscle performed an important function in supporting the body weight and maintaining posture.     

Permeation and separation of organic liquid mixtures through liquid-crystalline polymer networks

A side-chain liquid-crystalline polymer (LCP) was synthesized by the addition of the mesogenic monomer to poly(methyl siloxane) in presence of a Pt-catalyst. When an aqueous solution of 10wt% ethanol was permeated through a LCP membrane by pervaporation at various temperatures, the permeation rate increased with increasing temperature and drastically changed at glass-nematic (Tg) and nematic-isotropic (TNI) transition temperatures of the LCP membrane. The LCP membrane exhibited the waterpermselectivity in the glassy and liquid-crystalline states. The ethanol concentration in the permeate increased with increasing permeation temperature and the LCP membrane changed from the waterpermselectivity to the ethanol-permselectivity around TNI. These results suggested that the permselectivity was influenced by the change of the LCP membrane structure, that is, its state transformation. It was found that a balance of the orientation of mesogenic groups and flexibility of siloxane chains is very important for the permeability and selectivity.     

Ulcerative colitis associated with Weber-Christian panniculitis and musculitis: a case report

A case of 22-year-old man suffering from ulcerative colitis, in whom Weber-Christian panniculitis and musculitis occurred simultaneously, is reported. He had suffered from ulcerative colitis for 7 years and he again had bloody stools 1 month before being admitted. Two weeks before admission, large (2-4 cm) subcutaneous tumors appeared. Weber-Christian panniculitis, musculitis, and active stage ulcerative colitis were diagnosed. All the symptoms went into remission after steroid therapy. The possibility of the existence of a common antigen in enterobacterial wall, colonic epithelium, and adipose tissue was suggested.     

A far-infrared spectroscopic study of low temperature soft phonon mode in Tris-Sarcosine Calcium Chloride(TSCC)

Temperature dependences of the soft phonon frequency and the damping constant in Tris-Sarcosine Calcium Chloride (TSCC) single crystal have been investigated between 5K and 100K by using a Fourier-transform far-infrared spectrometer. It has been observed that the soft phonon frequency decreases gradually and the damping constant increases as the transition temperature is approached from below The damping constant varies from 7cm^-1 a 90K to less than 0.5cm^-1 at 5K. It has been found that the damping constant is approximately proportional to temperature below about 60K.     

An empirical approach for structure-based prediction of carbohydrate-binding sites on proteins

A computer program system was developed to predict carbohydrate-bindingsites on three-dimensional (3D) protein structures. The programssearch for binding sites by referring to the empirical rulesderived from the known 3D structures of carbohydrate–proteincomplexes. A total of 80 non-redundant carbohydrate–proteincomplex structures were selected from the Protein Data Bankfor the empirical rule construction. The performance of theprediction system was tested on 50 known complex structuresto determine whether the system could detect the known bindingsites. The known monosaccharide-binding sites were detectedamong the best three predictions in 59% of the cases, whichcovered 69% of the polysaccharide-binding sites in the targetproteins, when the performance was evaluated by the overlapbetween residue patches of predicted and known binding sites. Autonomic nervous function of the patients with neurally mediated syncope

Although diagnosis of neurally mediated syncope (NMS) using head-up tilt (HUT) test has been established, the exact mechanism of NMS has not yet been elucidated. We evaluated beta and alpha-adrenergic function in NMS patients by pharmacological autonomic function test. The alpha-adrenergic sensitivity of NMS patients was significantly lower than that of control subjects. The patients who need low dose isoproterenol for provocation of syncope showed higher beta-adrenergic sensitivity than patients who developed syncope without isoproterenol. Thus, pharmacological autonomic function test was useful for evaluation of NMS patients.     

Comparative study on the assay for IgE antibodies specific for Chamaecyparis obtusa pollen between AlaSTAT and CAP-RAST

Titers of IgE antibody specific for the pollen of Chamaecyparis obtusa (C. obtusa) were determined by AlaSTAT and CAP-RAST in 221 patients with Japanese cedar pollinosis. IgE antibody to C. obtusa tested positive by CAP-RAST at a higher rate (80.5%) than by AlaSTAT (52.6%). The results obtained from the two assays were compared with those from intradermal skin test. CAP-RAST had a higher sensitivity than that of AlaSTAT. Because the two methods showed no differences in the determination of IgE antibody specific for Cryptomeria japonica, the above differences between AlaSTAT and CAP-RAST are surmised to be ascribable to the differences of C. obtusa antigen used in the both assays.     

Titania NOx sensors for exhaust monitoring

Oxide semiconductors have been examined to develop NO_x sensors for exhaust monitoring. Titania doped with trivalent elements, such as Al³⁺, Sc³⁺, Ga³⁺ or In³⁺, has a good sensitivity and selectivity to NO between 450 and 550 °C, and shows rapid response. A sensor probe for monitoring exhaust NO_x has been fabricated. Many kinds of interference gases, such as C₃H₆, CO and SO₂, have been found to have only a slight influence on the sensor response to NO. The influence of O₂ and H₂O is also negligible, except for the cases of 0% H₂O and fuel-rich conditions. In accordance with these results, the sensor probe operates satisfactority in the exhaust gas of various combustion conditions without interference from the various kinds of gas species in the exhaust gases.     

Numerical investigation of zoomable holographic projection without a zoom lens

Holographic projection is for laser displays and has the merits of being aberration free, producing high‐contrast images, having the ability of color reconstruction with one spatial light modulator, and so on. In this paper, we propose a zoomable holographic projection without using a zoom lens and verify the proposed method by using numerical simulation. Although such a system can be readily realized to use the features of holography, which is capable of recording a large image exceeding the hologram size, the required calculation is very time consuming. For acceleration, we used shifted Fresnel diffraction for setting different sampling rates on a hologram and projected image. The proposed method can project any zoom‐in and zoom‐out image between zeroth‐order and first‐order lights, and the processing time and required memory for the zoom are constant.
