We present a general method for analyzing dynamically accelerating multiple co-linear cracks that can be applied to the contexts of plane strain or antiplane shear in an elastic material. The difficulty in solving such problems lies in the fact that the space-time regions containing known data evolve as the crack propagates in an a priori unknown manner. Using an analog to a Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, we can find complete knowledge of the stress and displacement along the fracture plane, facilitating the application of fracture criteria that require these values away from the crack tip. The method is demonstrated for a semi-infinite or finite mode III crack as well as for a pair of cracks in elastic material, using a stress intensity factor fracture criterion for simplicity.  相似文献

Emulsifiable oils are often used in posttensioned construction to reduce friction losses and provide temporary corrosion protection for tendons prior to grouting. This paper addresses the effects of two emulsifiable oils and three duct types on bond and friction losses. Bond test results indicate that corrugated galvanized steel ducts provide better anchorage than corrugated HDPE ducts. Rigid steel pipes performed poorly because of failure at the duct-concrete or grout-duct interface. Bond test results also indicate that the ultimate strength of posttensioned specimens with oiled tendons is similar to or better than the ultimate strength of specimens with unoiled tendons. However, specimens with oiled tendons experienced greater slip at a given load than specimens with unoiled tendons. Friction test results indicate that current recommended design values for the coefficient of friction for steel pipes and galvanized ducts are accurate. However, the measured coefficient for HDPE ducts is significantly less than the AASHTO-recommended value. Friction tests also indicate that lubrication of the tendon reduces the friction coefficient by 15% in rigid steel pipes and HDPE ducts if stressing occurs while the oil is fresh.  相似文献

The acute toxicity of chlorpyrifos and its principal metabolite 3,5,6-trichloropyridinol (TCP) alone and in combination to a cladoceran, Daphnia carinata, was studied in both cladoceran culture medium and natural water collected from a local suburban stream. TCP was found to be more toxic than its parent chemical chlorpyrifos to Daphnia survival in cladoceran culture medium. However, TCP in natural water was not toxic to D. carinata up to 2 microgL(-1). The LC(50) values for chlorpyrifos, TCP and chlorpyrifos+TCP were 0.24, 0.20 and 0.08 microgL(-1), respectively, in cladoceran culture medium. Although the parent chemicals and their degradation products co-exist in natural waters, the existing guidelines for water quality are based on individual chemicals. The results of this investigation suggest that chlorpyrifos and TCP can interact synergistically, additively or antagonistically, resulting in an increase or decrease in the overall toxicity of the mixture compared to individual compounds. The indigenous microorganisms in natural water could play a significant role in degradation of these compounds thereby influencing their toxicity in receiving waters. This study clearly suggests that the joint action of pesticides and their degradation products should be considered in the development of water quality guidelines. To our knowledge, this is the first study on the interactive effect of chlorpyrifos and TCP to a cladoceran and suggests that these two compounds are non-toxic when present together at concentrations up to 0.12 microgL(-1). However, these compounds together act additively at and above 0.5 microgL(-1) to fresh water invertebrates and therefore pollution with these compounds may adversely affect natural ecosystems.  相似文献

In laboratory experiments, a soil isolate of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. was found to be an effective pathogen of adult Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) under certain conditions. Experiments on the effect of temperature showed that infection could occur down to 7°C, the lowest temperature tested. Little difference in mortality was noted when beetles were exposed to wheat treated with a range of concentrations of B. bassiana conidiospores in suspension (106, 105 and 104 spores ml?1), but mortality was lower at 103 spores ml?1. Humidity level, however, was the critical factor in allowing infection to occur. Beetles became infected at 100% r.h. but not at 90% r.h.When conidiospores of B. bassiana were applied to 50 g wheat grain cultures of O. surinamensis, the fungus proved ineffective in killing adult beetles. Breeding success, however, was sharply reduced with a 91% decrease in numbers of larvae and pupae in cultures treated with spores of the fungus mixed with the grain.  相似文献

Many biological systems use extensive networks for the transport of resources and information. Ants are no exception. How do biological systems achieve efficient transportation networks in the absence of centralized control and without global knowledge of the environment? Here, we address this question by studying the formation and properties of inter-nest transportation networks in the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile). We find that the formation of inter-nest networks depends on the number of ants involved in the construction process. When the number of ants is sufficient and networks do form, they tend to have short total length but a low level of robustness. These networks are topologically similar to either minimum spanning trees or Steiner networks. The process of network formation involves an initial construction of multiple links followed by a pruning process that reduces the number of trails. Our study thus illuminates the conditions under and the process by which minimal biological transport networks can be constructed.  相似文献

Living organisms generate electrical fields. The conduction of electrochemical excitation is a fundamental property of living organisms. Cells, tissues, and organs transmit electrochemical signals over short and long distances. Excitation waves in higher plants are possible mechanisms for intercellular and intracellular communication in the presence of environmental changes. Ionic channels, as natural nanodevices, control the plasma membrane potential and the movement of ions across membranes; thereby, regulating various biological functions. Some voltage-gated ion channels work as plasma membrane nanopotentiostats. Tetraethylammonium chloride and ZnCl2 block K+ and Ca2+ ionic channels. These blockers inhibit the propagation of action potentials induced by blue light, and inhibit phototropism in soybean plants. The irradiation of soybean plants at 450 ± 50 nm induces action potentials with duration times of about 0.3 ms and amplitudes around 60 mV. The role of the electrified nanointerface of the plasma membrane in signal transduction is discussed.  相似文献

Purification of a cytosolic fatty acid-binding protein (FABP) from developing human placenta has been achieved, and its role in modulating the inhibition of human placental glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) by palmitoyl-CoA (PAL-CoA) has been studied. FABP was resolved into three peaks, viz. DE-I, DE-II and DE-III, by DEAE cellulose chromatography. DE-I was almost lipid-free. Presence of endogenous fatty acids in DE-II and DE-III was detected by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Fatty acids were the only detectable lipid component in these fractions. Gas liquid chromatography (GLC) analysis revealed that DE-II binds long chain saturated and unsaturated fatty acids nonspecifically, whereas DE-III is mainly an arachidonic acid carrier. Each of these fractions, viz. DE-I, DE-II and DE-III, has a molecular weight of 14,200 Daltons. Ouchterlony double immunodiffusion studies have confirmed the immunochemical identity of these three fractions of placental FABP. Separation in ion exchanger may be due to their different isoelectric points and varied types of binding affinities. Human placental G6PD was inhibited 50% by 0.03 mM PAL-CoA. The DE-II fraction of FABP enhanced the activity of G6PD in the absence of added PAL-CoA and protected against PAL-CoA inhibition of the enzyme. Such a modulating effect of FABP in this inhibition is attributable to binding of long chain acyl-CoA rather than to a direct effect of FABP on the enzyme itself.  相似文献
