Linear/branched PP blends at various ratios were used as the matrix for thermoplastic olefin (TPO) compounds, containing an ethylene–octene copolymer dispersed phase. A detailed investigation of the physical properties of these blends revealed that addition of branched PP (BPP) resulted in improved stiffness and flexural properties. Given that the phase morphology of the blends and the interfacial tension between their components remained virtually unaffected, these improvements are attributed to the higher stiffness of the BPP‐containing matrices. Talc‐filled TPOs containing branched PPs exhibited further improvements in the stiffness and flexural properties. An investigation into the bubble growth process during foaming using a batch foaming simulation system revealed that the presence of BPP resulted in a slight delay in cell nucleation, whereas the rate of bubble growth was not significantly altered. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To evaluate the contributions of common noise sources to total annual noise exposures among urban residents and workers, we estimated exposures associated with five common sources (use of mass transit, occupational and nonoccupational activities, MP3 player and stereo use, and time at home and doing other miscellaneous activities) among a sample of over 4500 individuals in New York City (NYC). We then evaluated the contributions of each source to total noise exposure and also compared our estimated exposures to the recommended 70 dBA annual exposure limit. We found that one in ten transit users had noise exposures in excess of the recommended exposure limit from their transit use alone. When we estimated total annual exposures, 90% of NYC transit users and 87% of nonusers exceeded the recommended limit. MP3 player and stereo use, which represented a small fraction of the total annual hours for each subject on average, was the primary source of exposure among the majority of urban dwellers we evaluated. Our results suggest that the vast majority of urban mass transit riders may be at risk of permanent, irreversible noise-induced hearing loss and that, for many individuals, this risk is driven primarily by exposures other than occupational noise.  相似文献

Forty-four early lactation (64 ± 20 d in milk) dairy cows of mixed parity were used to assess the effect of 4 supplementary concentrate types (n=11) on N partitioning. Animals were blocked on parity and calving date, and blocks were balanced for previous milk yield and milk protein yield. Cows received grazed pasture plus 5.17 kg of dry matter (DM)/d of one of the following isoenergetic concentrates: high crude protein (CP) with rolled barley (HP, 19% CP); low CP with rolled barley (LP, 15% CP); low CP with barley and supplementary 2-hydroxy-4-methylthio butanoic acid (HMBi; LP+HMBi, 15% CP); and low CP with ground corn (LP Corn, 15% CP). Nitrogen partitioning studies were conducted at wk 6 and 10 postpartum by using the n-alkane technique to determine pasture dry matter intake (DMI). Pasture DMI (13.3kg of DM/d) and dietary digestibility of DM were not affected by concentrate type. Milk yield was lower for LP compared with other concentrate types (25.4 vs. 28.3 kg/d). Yields of milk protein and milk casein were not affected by concentrate type. However, milk solid yield and milk fat yield were higher for LP+HMBi (1.97 and 0.92 kg/d) compared with LP (1.72 and 0.87 kg/d). Concentrations of fat, protein, lactose, and casein were not affected by concentrate type. Dietary N intake was higher for HP compared with other treatments (0.545 vs. 0.482 kg/d, HP vs. average of the 3 LP treatments). Dietary N intakes were not different among low CP concentrates. Fecal N excretion was not affected by concentrate type. However, urinary N excretion was related to N intake and was higher for HP compared with other treatments (0.261 vs. 0.195 kg/d, HP vs. average of the 3 LP treatments). Urinary N excretion was not different among low CP concentrates. Milk N output was higher for HP (0.139 kg/d) compared with LP (0.12 kg/d) but not LP+HMBi (0.137 kg/d) or LP Corn (0.138 kg/d). The portion of feed N excreted as feces N was lower for HP compared with other treatments (0.272 vs. 0.327, HP vs. average of the 3 LP treatmentsHowever, the portion of feed N excreted as urine N was higher for HP (0.466) compared with LP+HMBi (0.408) and LP Corn (0.366) but not compared with LP. The portion of feed N excreted as milk N was higher for LP Corn (0.282) compared with HP (0.257) but not LP+HMBi or LP. Dietary reformulation to reduce N excretion in pasture-based dairy production systems is possible. However, maintenance of milk yield and milk N when concentrate CP was reduced (19 vs. 15%) required the use of either protected AA (HMBi) or ground corn.  相似文献

It is vital to process breadfruit in order to develop new value-added products with improved sensory and physicochemical characteristics. In this research, dried breadfruit was extruded with a twin screw extruder and effects of barrel temperature, moisture content, feeding rate and screw speed on product physicochemical properties and process energy consumption were studied. Quadratic models were obtained to predict the product quality under various processing conditions. The best range of crispness of the extrudate was from 2.0 to 3.5N/s, hardness from 60 to 75 N and bulk density from 0.3 to 0.38 g/cm3. Corresponding operating conditions of feeding rate, temperature, screw speed and moisture content to obtain best results of crispness, hardness and bulk density were 16 kg/h, 130 °C, 160 rpm, 22 g/100 g; 22 kg/h, 150 °C, 160rpm, 22 g/kg; 19 kg/h, 140 °C, 115 rpm, 19 g/100 g; and 25 kg/h, 140 °C, 145 rpm, 19 g/100 g, respectively. The linear term of screw speed significantly effected all indexes (p < 0.001), especially water absorption and solubility indexes, sectional expansion ratio, bulk density, color and specific mechanical energy. The interaction term of feed rate and temperature, and square term of screw speed had no significant influences (p ≥ 0.1). The findings were useful for developing and optimizing extruded or value-added co products of breadfruit.  相似文献

This study used in situ polymerization to prepare polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanocomposites incorporating Ethoquad‐modified montmorillonite (eMMT), unmodified hectorite (HCT), or phenyl hectorite (phHCT) particles to study the impact of platelet surface chemistry and loading on thermal, mechanical, and gas barrier properties. eMMT platelets reduced the PET crystallization rate without altering the ultimate degree of crystallinity. In contrast, HCT and phHCT platelets accelerated the polymer's crystallization rate and increased its crystallinity. DMA results for thermally‐quenched samples showed that as T increased past glass transition temperature (Tg), HCT and phHCT nanocomposites (and control PET) manifested precipitous drops in G′ followed by increasing G′ due to cold crystallization; in contrast, eMMT nanocomposites had much higher G′ values around Tg. This provides direct evidence of eMMT reinforcement in thermally‐quenched eMMT nanocomposites. These results suggest that eMMT has a strong, favorable interaction with PET, possibly through Ethoquad‐PET entanglement. HCT and phHCT have a fundamentally different interaction with PET that increases crystallization rate and Tg by 11 to 17°C. Water barrier improvement in eMMT nanocomposites agrees with previously published oxygen barrier results and can be rationalized in terms of a tortuous path gas barrier model. POLYM. ENG. This study presents a novel computer-assisted detection (CAD) system for automatically detecting and precisely quantifying abnormal nodular branching opacities in chest computed tomography (CT), termed tree-in-bud (TIB) opacities by radiology literature. The developed CAD system in this study is based on 1) fast localization of candidate imaging patterns using local scale information of the images, and 2) M?bius invariant feature extraction method based on learned local shape and texture properties of TIB patterns. For fast localization of candidate imaging patterns, we use ball-scale filtering and, based on the observation of the pattern of interest, a suitable scale selection is used to retain only small size patterns. Once candidate abnormality patterns are identified, we extract proposed shape features from regions where at least one candidate pattern occupies. The comparative evaluation of the proposed method with commonly used CAD methods is presented with a dataset of 60 chest CTs (laboratory confirmed 39 viral bronchiolitis human parainfluenza CTs and 21 normal chest CTs). The quantitative results are presented as the area under the receiver operator characteristics curves and a computer score (volume affected by TIB) provided as an output of the CAD system. In addition, a visual grading scheme is applied to the patient data by three well-trained radiologists. Interobserver and observer-computer agreements are obtained by the relevant statistical methods over different lung zones. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed CAD system can achieve high detection rates with an overall accuracy of 90.96%. Moreover, correlations of observer-observer (R(2)=0.8848, and observer-CAD agreements (R(2)=0.824, validate the feasibility of the use of the proposed CAD system in detecting and quantifying TIB patterns.  相似文献

The present study addressed the need for furan mitigation measures at the level of food production, where the effects of extrinsic (process-related) and intrinsic (product-related) properties on furan formation in vegetable-based systems were investigated. For the first time in the literature, the effect of high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) processing on the formation of furan was demonstrated. HPHT processing was proven to be an interesting alternative for furan reduction in vegetable-based systems, when aiming for sterilization intensities. Following HPHT treatment, the furan concentrations of a wide range of individual vegetable purées dropped to levels close to the analytical limits (1–2 ng/g purée). A higher processing cost might limit the use of HPHT processing to high-value added products, which means that for many other conduction-heated food products, conventional heating would remain the standard technology. As a first step towards control of furan formation in the latter products, a mixed model regression was used to identify the major precursors in vegetable-based systems. Significant correlations were observed for vitamin C and sugars, which were attributed to the efficiency of the conversion and high concentrations, respectively. Next to furan, the HPHT- and thermally treated purées were analyzed for 2- and 3-methylfuran, which are likely to undergo the same metabolic fate as furan. For most of the vegetables tested, the total amount of methylfuran found in the thermally treated purées could not be ignored. Similarly to furan, there was a clear reduction in the concentrations found in the HPHT-treated purées.  相似文献

Understanding the genetic and neuroendocrine basis of the mother-infant bond is critical to understanding mammalian affiliation and attachment. Functionally similar nonsynonymous mu-opioid receptor (OPRM1) SNPs have arisen and been maintained in humans (A118G) and rhesus macaques Macaca mulatta (C77G). In rhesus macaques, variation in OPRM1 predicts individual differences in infant affiliation for mothers. Specifically, infants carrying the G allele show increased distress on separation from their mothers, and spend more time with them upon reunion, than individuals homozygous for the C allele. In humans, individuals possessing the G allele report higher perceptions of emotional pain on receiving rejection by social partners. We studied maternal behavior over the course of a year among free-ranging female rhesus macaques on Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico. We then trapped females and collected blood samples from which we assessed OPRM1 genotype; we also collected cerebrospinal fluid samples from which we measured oxytocin (OT) levels. We show that females possessing the G allele restrain their infants more (i.e., prevent infants from separating from them by pulling them back) than females homozygous for the C allele. Females possessing the G allele also show higher OT levels when lactating, and lower OT levels when neither lactating nor pregnant, than females homozygous for the C allele. This is the first study to demonstrate an association between OPRM1 genotype and maternal attachment for infants, and is one of the first studies of any free-ranging primate population to link functional genetic variation to behavior via potentially related neuroendocrine mechanisms. This article critically reviews methodologies and theoretical orientations of 27 published empirical studies examining the graduate school experiences of students of color using Bronfenbrenner's (1979, 1994) bioecological model. Despite the urgent need for evidence-based approaches to increase the number of scholars of color, the findings in this review indicate an inadequate number of studies explaining how to realize that goal. Furthermore, much of the existing literature examined individual-level characteristics rather than how environmental factors benefit students.
