Ammonia losses following surface applications of urea to trash covered sugar cane fields were investigated in four climatic zones of tropical Queensland. Volatilization of ammonia and evaporation of water were determined by micrometeorological techniques. The results showed that the pattern, rate and extent of ammonia loss were controlled by the availability of water in the trash and its evaporation. Water added by dewfall, rainfall or condensation of evaporated soil moisture dissolved some of the urea and allowed it to be hydrolyzed to ammonia by the urease enzyme in the sugarcane residues; when the water evaporated, ammonia was lost to the atmosphere.In the dry climatic zone, where no rain or dew fell, water addition to the trash by condensation of evaporated soil moisture was not sufficient to dissolve much urea so very little ammonia was lost. In the cool and warm moist zones, small additions of water to the trash from dew, light rain and condensation maintained a slow but steady pattern of ammonia loss over a period of six weeks and resulted in losses of 32% and 39% of the applied nitrogen. At the site in the wet zone, heavy rainfall apparently washed the urea from the trash layer into the soil and limited ammonia loss to 17% of the applied nitrogen.Substitution of ammonium sulfate for urea reduced ammonia loss to less than 1.8% of the applied nitrogen.  相似文献

An investigation has been carried out to attempt to understand the unusually low apparent symmetry factor observed during the reduction of V(5) at higher overpotentials at carbon electrodes (typically <0.13, or >460 mV decade−1). This reaction is of interest because it occurs in vanadium redox-flow batteries (VRBs) during discharge. Polarisation curves were measured using a rotating disk electrode (RDE). The reaction was not solution mass transport controlled, was pH independent (ca from 0 to 1), and the observed Tafel slope was unaffected by V(5) concentration over a range from 0.031 to 280 mM. Electrode double layer capacitance measurements were also carried out in sulphuric acid with and without vanadium. These tests showed that the presence of V(5) caused a suppression of the normal carbon surface quinone pseudocapacitance, as well as the appearance of two new pseudocapacitance peaks, one around 0.175-0.2 V and the other around 0.675-0.725 V versus SCE. The observed results do not appear consistent with a precipitated film causing diffusion limitations or causing IR drop. A model is developed to try to explain the data, which involves electron transfer through an adsorbed layer of vanadium.  相似文献

FKBP5 encodes FK506-binding protein 5, a glucocorticoid receptor (GR)-binding protein implicated in various psychiatric disorders and alcohol withdrawal severity. The purpose of this study is to characterize alcohol preference and related phenotypes in Fkbp5 knockout (KO) mice and to examine the role of FKBP5 in human alcohol consumption. The following experiments were performed to characterize Fkpb5 KO mice. (1) Fkbp5 KO and wild-type (WT) EtOH consumption was tested using a two-bottle choice paradigm; (2) The EtOH elimination rate was measured after intraperitoneal (IP) injection of 2.0 g/kg EtOH; (3) Blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was measured after 3 h limited access of alcohol; (4) Brain region expression of Fkbp5 was identified using LacZ staining; (5) Baseline corticosterone (CORT) was assessed. Additionally, two SNPs, rs1360780 (C/T) and rs3800373 (T/G), were selected to study the association of FKBP5 with alcohol consumption in humans. Participants were college students (n = 1162) from 21–26 years of age with Chinese, Korean or Caucasian ethnicity. The results, compared to WT mice, for KO mice exhibited an increase in alcohol consumption that was not due to differences in taste sensitivity or alcohol metabolism. Higher BAC was found in KO mice after 3 h of EtOH access. Fkbp5 was highly expressed in brain regions involved in the regulation of the stress response, such as the hippocampus, amygdala, dorsal raphe and locus coeruleus. Both genotypes exhibited similar basal levels of plasma corticosterone (CORT). Finally, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in FKBP5 were found to be associated with alcohol drinking in humans. These results suggest that the association between FKBP5 and alcohol consumption is conserved in both mice and humans.  相似文献

In most countries, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions typically contribute less than 10% of the CO2 equivalent greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In New Zealand, however, this gas contributes 17% of the nation’s total GHG emissions due to the dominance of the agricultural sector. New Zealand’s target under the Kyoto Protocol is to reduce GHG emissions to 1990 levels. Currently total GHG emissions are 17% above 1990 levels. The single largest source of N2O emission in New Zealand is animal excreta deposited during grazing (80% of agricultural N2O emissions), while N fertilizer use currently contributes only 14% of agricultural emissions. Nitrogen fertilizer use has, however, increased 4-fold since 1990. Mitigation strategies for reducing N2O emissions in New Zealand focus on (i) reducing the amount of N excreted to pasture, e.g. through diet manipulation; (ii) increasing the N use efficiency of excreta or fertilizer, e.g. through grazing management or use of nitrification inhibitors; or (iii) avoiding soil conditions that favour denitrification e.g. improving drainage and reducing soil compaction. Current estimates suggest that, if fully implemented, these individual measures can reduce agricultural N2O emissions by 7–20%. The highest reduction potentials are obtained from measures that reduce the amount of excreta N, or increase the N use efficiency of excreta or fertilizer. However, New Zealand’s currently used N2O inventory methodology will require refinement to ensure that a reduction in N2O emissions achieved through implementation of any of these mitigation strategies can be fully accounted for. Furthermore, as many of these mitigation strategies also affect other greenhouse gas emissions or other environmental losses, it is crucial that both the economic and total environmental impacts of N2O mitigation strategies are evaluated at a farm system’s level.  相似文献

Strategic bridging functions performed by three voluntary, multi-stakeholder bridging organizations engaged in environmental governance and management in the Calgary Region of Alberta, Canada, are examined. Structured interviews revealed how the bridging organizations influenced an increase in municipal participation in regional-scale environmental governance and management activities. Bridging organizations connect stakeholders who would otherwise not be connected. They identify shared values and issues of concern, build trusting relationships, co-create knowledge, resolve conflict, and contribute to social learning processes. Social network structure is made visible through social network graphs. The legitimacy of natural resource management plans co-created through strategic bridging processes is also addressed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has been used to partially characterize eight selected asphalts. This report describes the initial efforts in this endeavor. Proton and carbon spectra have been collected and analyzed for percent aromatic content as well as aromatic substitution. DEFT results, chemical shifts and literature precedent have been used to assign the major resonances in the aliphatic region to chemical entities. Finally, using elemental analysis data, molecular weight data and NMR results, average structures for the eight asphalts have been derived  相似文献

In this paper we describe the validation and utilization of the Hybrizyme TM DELFIA immunoassay for detecting polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in animal fat. The immunoassay incorporates a rapid sample processing protocol that has been optimized to detect concentrations of PCBs in animal fat at or above 200ng/g. The limit of detection of the assay was less than 50ng/g. When the action level for the DELFIA assay was set at 100ng/g to detect samples having 200ng/g or more PCBs, the false negative rate was estimated at 0.2% . The false positive rate depends on the concentration of PCBs in the sample population and was estimated at 4% and 7% for samples having 10ng/ g and 20ng/g PCBs, respectively. By utilizing the DELFIA assay system to select for positive samples and GC/MS analysis for confirmation analysis, an accurate and cost-effective programme has been established for the high throughput detection of PCBs in animal products.  相似文献

Growth of Salmonella was assessed during sprouting of naturally contaminated alfalfa seeds associated with two outbreaks of salmonellosis. Salmonella was determined daily in sprouts and sprout rinse water samples by a three-tube most probable number (MPN) procedure and a commercial enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Growth of Salmonella in the sprouts was reflected in the rinse water, and the MPNs of the two samples were generally in agreement within approximately 1 log. The results from EIA testing of sprouts and water samples were also in agreement. The pathogen was present in the seed at less than 1 MPN/g, and it increased in number to maximum population levels of 102 to 10(3) MPN/g in one seed lot and 10(2) to 10(4) MPN/ g in the other seed lot. Maximum populations of the pathogen were apparent by day 2 of sprouting. These results show the ability of the pathogen to grow to detectable levels during the sprouting process, and they provide support for the recommendation to test the sprout water for the presence of pathogens 48 h after starting seed sprouting. The effectiveness of a 10-min, 20,0000-microg/ml (ppm) calcium hypochlorite treatment of the outbreak-associated seeds was studied. For both seed lots, the hypochlorite treatment caused a reduction, but not elimination, of Salmonella contamination in the finished sprouts. These results confirm the need to test each production batch for the presence of pathogens, even after 20,000 microg/ml (ppm) hypochlorite treatment of seeds, so that contaminated product is not distributed.  相似文献

The Jackfish Bay Remedial Action Plan is the first of Lake Superior's Areas of Concern (AOCs) to consider recognition as an Area in Recovery (AiR). As a result of a high degree of complexity and uncertainty, ecosystem recovery in Jackfish Bay has been determined using a combination of regulatory policies and scientific evidence and extensive public and expert-based decision making. As a result, the conceptualization of the AiR status in Jackfish Bay has been developed with the adaptive management and the ecosystem approach, which provide the basic principles of assessing, monitoring, and managing the Area of Concern. To determine the status of beneficial use impairments caused by effluent from the Terrace Bay Pulp Inc., three public advisory committees—an academic panel of experts, a government technical review committee, and the Jackfish Bay Public Area in Recovery Review Committee (PARRC)—reviewed relevant scientific data and documents, including peer-reviewed publications, to assess changes in pollution levels in Jackfish Bay and improvements to aquatic, biotic, and benthic environments of the bay. The public decision-making process concluded with recommendations by the PARRC to develop a systematic monitoring program so that the ecosystem recovery process in the bay could be assessed on a continued basis, leading to its eventual delisting as an AOC. The entire process provides an example of blending science and public policies for remediation of a degraded ecosystem on the Great Lakes.  相似文献
