The dispersion of magnetic nanorods in poly(2‐vinylpyridine) (PVP) as a function of rod length, particle loading and molecular weight of PVP was investigated. The nanorods were organized into small spherical clusters at low particle loading. Further increasing the particle concentration caused an increase in the size of the aggregates. Additionally, the internal structure of the nanorods developed into a raft‐like structure, forming rectangular clusters. The incorporation of longer nanorods in the PVP amplified the magnetic interaction energy, which created conditions to induce extensive aggregation. The entanglement of the polymer also played an important role in the arrangement of the nanorods. This behavior could be categorized into two regimes, MPVP > Me and MPVP < Me, where MPVP and Me are the number‐average molecular weight and entanglement molecular weight of PVP, respectively: for MPVP > Me, PVP formed entanglements that prevented nanorods from extensive aggregation; for MPVP < Me, PVP could not form entanglements, and nanorods could move freely in the PVP, and thus significant rod aggregation occurred. Simple calculations to assess the contribution of the magnetic interaction, the van der Waals interaction and the free energy of mixing of the system to the arrangement of magnetic nanorods in the homopolymer are discussed. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A new method is given for designing multivariate control charts based on loss functions. The average run length contours of the proposed procedure correspond closely to the contours of the expected loss. In this study, pure rhodium was fabricated and mechanically investigated at the nanoscale for the first time. The nanopillars approach was employed to study the effects of size on the yield point. Nanopillars with different diameters were fabricated using electroplating followed by uniaxial compression tests. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used as a quality control technique by imaging the pillars before and after compression to ensure the absence of cracks, buckling, barrelling or any other problems. Transmission electron microscopy and SEM were used as microstructural characterization techniques. Due to substrate-induced effects, only the plastic region of the stress–strain curves were investigated, and it was revealed that the yield point increases with size reduction up to certain limit, then decreases with further reduction of the nanopillar size (diameter). The later weakening effect is consistent with the literature, which demonstrates the reversed size effect (the failure of the plasticity theory) in nanocrystalline metals, i.e. smaller is weaker. In this study, however, the effect of size reduction is not only weakening, but is strengthening-then-weakening, which the authors believe is the true behavior of nanocrystalline materials.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of microstructure and phase composition on the mechanical behaviour of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and biphasic HAp/β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) bioceramic materials using nanoindentation. The formation of β-TCP phase in the HAp ceramic had the predominant influence on the nanomechanical properties of compact ceramics. For investigated microstructures there appear to be a slight decrease in the elastic modulus with increasing load and a higher decrease in hardness, which are in agreement with upper bounds of the results reported in literature. Maximal value of reduced modulus and hardness is yielded with pure HAp, and is measured to be 133.76 GPa for average grain size of 3 μm and 12.18 GPa for average grain size of 140 nm, respectively. The average modulus and hardness results for HAp/β-TCP ceramics with higher (101.61 GPa, 6.76 GPa) and lower grain size (115.72 GPa, 8.76 GPa) show sufficient mechanical properties in order to serve as hard tissue replacement material.  相似文献

Utilizing controlled cryopreservation techniques, we were able to standardize the 51Cr release cytotoxicity assay and thereby ensured reliable comparisons between results obtained on different days. Optimal conditions for freezing of both effector and target cells were quite similar. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at a concentration of 7.5-10.0% was employed as the cryoprotective agent and cells were frozen at the rate of -1 degrees C/minute. The handling procedures for the cells before and after freezing were important. Factors affecting recovery of functional reactivity were related to toxicity of DMSO for the cells, the osmotic stress placed upon the cells as the DMSO was being removed after thawing, the handling temperature of the freshly thawed cells, and the susceptibility of cells to mechanical damage immediately after thawing. The recovery of lymphocytes after freezing was about 70%; the recovery of cytotoxicity was around 85%. Syngeneic cytotoxic reactivity induced by inoculation with the Moloney strain of murine sarcoma virus was cryopreserved, as were allogeneic cytotoxicity and natural cytotoxic reactivity. Multiple tests employing effector cells from the same frozen pool gave reproducible results; the standard error of the mean percent cytotoxicity was less than 1.5%. Cryopreserved target cells gave decreased day-to-day variability in susceptibility to lysis, since the same population of cells could be employed in each assay. These results demonstrated conclusively that we can now have a constant source of effector cells and target cells, which can be used from assay to assay as an internal standard.  相似文献

Scope: Prostate‐specific antigen (PSA) is a well‐known marker for diagnosing and monitoring prostate cancer. Curcumin, a yellow curry pigment, has been reported to enhance androgen receptor (AR) degradation. We examined the effects of curcumin on increasing PSA expression by hypoxia and prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors, L ‐mimosine and dimethyloxalylglycine (DMOG), in human prostate carcinoma LNCaP cells. Methods and results: The 3H‐thymidine incorporation assay revealed that either L ‐mimosine or DMOG treatments attenuated cell proliferation. Immunoblot and enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) indicated that both L ‐mimosine and DMOG have an effect similar to hypoxia, which stabilized hypoxia‐inducible factor‐1α (HIF‐1α) and induced PSA gene expression. The results of the immunoblot and transient gene expression assays indicated that induction of the PSA expression by hypoxia is both HIF‐1α‐ and AR‐dependent. Immunoblot assays revealed that a curcumin treatment (10 μM) decreased the protein abundance of AR but did not significantly affect the protein levels of HIF‐1α and vascular endothelial growth factor, which were induced by hypoxia. ELISA and transient gene expression assays indicated that curcumin blocked the activation of L ‐mimosine or DMOG treatment on PSA expression. Conclusions: These results indicate that curcumin blocked the enhanced effect of PSA expression by L ‐mimosine and DMOG that induce hypoxia condition.  相似文献
