Various methods can be applied to introduce additives to ceramic materials. Of these methods, mechanical mixing may not always be suitable to obtain a uniform distribution of the small quantities of additive within the structure, requiring colloidal methods to be applied for the purpose. The addition of manganese oxide to alumina powder has been studied using a colloidal method. The effect of the manganese addition on alumina microstructure and the later stages of the densification behaviour was investigated, together with the hardness and mechanical strength. No evidence of secondary phase formation was detected between the manganese cation and alumina powder for up to 0.5wt% manganese addition, suggesting that manganese is in solid solution with alumina. The microstructural evidence presented suggests that small quantities of a manganese addition to alumina enhance the densification process through the formation of fast diffusion paths within the crystalline structure, similar to the effect of TiO2 addition. 相似文献

Management of non-resectable pelvic tumours by intra-arterial local chemotherapy was shown to be beneficial but systemic toxicity limits its use. To overcome this problem isolated pelvic perfusion (IPP) was introduced as an alternative. This study summarizes our preliminary experience with IPP in the treatment of 18 non-resectable pelvic tumours [recurrent rectal adenocarcinoma (six), soft tissue sarcoma (STS) (five), bone tumour (three), epidermoid carcinoma (two), prostatic adenocarcinoma (one), malignant melanoma (one)]. Results of IPP were regarded as complete remission (CR), partial remission (PR), stable disease (SD) and disease progression (DP) according to the changes in three parameters including; scoring in pain, tumour marker and tumour size measurements. Complete and partial remission were established in five (27%) and seven (39%) patients respectively indicating a benefit ratio of 66%. Objective pain relief was encountered in 53% of the cases. All patients with STS had undergone further surgical treatment after IPP with successful curative resections in four. No residual tumour was found at the laparotomy of the fifth patient. Presenting symptom of the prostatic adenocarcinoma patient was symptomatic hypoglycaemia which resolved completely after IPP. To our knowledge, this represents the first case reported in the English literature in whom tumour related hypoglycaemia was successfully managed by IPP. In conclusion; management of non-resectable pelvic tumours by IPP seems to offer serious palliation and increase in the quality of life without any systemic toxicity. The detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the gas phase by mass-sensitive disk microresonators is reported. The disk resonators were fabricated using a CMOS-compatible silicon micromachining process and subsequently placed in an amplifying feedback loop to sustain oscillation. Sensing of benzene, toluene, and xylene was conducted after applying controlled coatings of an analyte-absorbing polymer. An analytical model of the resonator's chemical sensing performance was developed and verified by the experimental data. Pullulan, which is comprised of glucose units, is a simple linear polysaccharide produced by Aureobasidium pullulans. Pullulan has long been used in various applications such as blood plasma substitutes, food additives, adhesive additives, flocculants, and even environmental pollution control agents. Mathematical models of biomass, pullulan, and sucrose profiles during fermentation not only provide information about the kinetic-metabolic nature of pullulan, but also facilitate the control and optimization of pullulan production. In this study, several models were modified and tested in order to describe biomass, pullulan, and sucrose profiles during batch fermentation using a color variant strain of A. pullulans. The results demonstrated that the modified Gompertz model can serve as a universal equation to fit biomass production, pullulan production, and sucrose consumption. Furthermore, validation of this modified Gompertz model indicated that biomass (slope = 1.00, R2 = 0.991), pullulan (slope = 1.10, R2 = 0.991), and sucrose (slope = 0.96, R2 = 0.991) were all predicted accurately. 相似文献

The presence of ochratoxin A (OTA) was investigated in barley, malt and beer samples using an ELISA method (RIDASCREEN). The lower detection limit of this OTA test was 0.08 μg/L for beer and 0.4 μg/kg for barley and malt. In 26 out of 29 barley samples the OTA content was between 0.53–12 μg/kg. OTA was between 0.5–6.6 μg/kg in 23 out of 24 malt samples. Only one malt sample had no detectable OTA using RIDASCREEN. The OTA content was between 0.1–8.10 μg/L in 42 out of 150 beer samples (28%) and in 108 beer samples OTA was not found at detectable levels (72%). Representatives of B?(N?)H hydrogen carriers are alkali borohydrides (e.g. LiBH4 and NaBH4) and amine boranes (e.g. NH3BH3 and NaNH2BH3). These are old compounds; they were discovered in the first half of the 20th century. One of the main contributors to their development is Prof. Hermann I. Schlesinger (1882–1960). In the recent years, there has been new interest in these old compounds as novel chemical H storage materials. Sodium borohydride NaBH4 is a typical example. It was discovered by Schlesinger and collaborators in the 1950s. At that time it was found to be an attractive H2 generator; owing to this property it reemerged in the early 2000s for on-board H2 generation.
