Effectiveness of involutive criteria in computation of polynomial Janet bases

In this paper, effectiveness of involutive criteria in the elimination of useless prolongations when computing polynomial Janet bases, which are typical representatives of involutive bases, is discussed. One of the results of this study is that the role of the criteria in an involutive algorithm is not as important as in the Buchberger algorithm. It is shown also that these criteria affect the growth of intermediate coefficients.     

Long-time risk of groundwater/drinking water pollution with sulphuric compounds beneath burned peatlands in Indonesia.

Smoke-haze episodes caused by vegetation and peat fires affect parts of Indonesia every year with significant impacts on human health and climate. The forest fires 1997/1998 were by far the largest in Indonesian history, burning between 5 and 8 million hectares before they were stopped by the monsoon rains in December 1997. Fires sprang up again in 1998 on Kalimantan when monsoon rain paused. Peat forests and peatlands are in particular severely affected. In the 1997/1998 haze event, 2.1-2.5 million hectare of peat swamp forest burnt in Indonesia. The remaining ash contains high concentrations of sulphur and sulphuric compounds which eventually leach into the groundwater, thus polluting groundwater and drinking water. The thicker the peat layer is and the higher the number of fires in the respective area the more sulphuric compounds will leach into the groundwater. Risk areas for the sulphur loads of the ash are identified.     

Estrogenic personal care products in a greywater reuse system.

The occurrence and fate of parabens in a greywater system was assessed. The potential for removal of residual paraben concentrations in effluent greywater with chlorine dioxide was also investigated. The influent to the greywater plant was characterised by considerable variation, with concentrations from below the detection limit to 40 microg/L and the five commonly used parabens in consumer products were frequently detected. After the biological treatment only two paraben were detected with concentration from 65-120 ng/L. Chlorine dioxide treatment of the biologically treated effluent with dosages down to 0.75 mg/L resulted in more than 97% reduction of all parabens. Formation of the by-product chloroform was insignificant from the chlorine dioxide treatment.     

Ultrafiltration of Milk on French Farms and in the Making of a New Specialty Cheese Industry

Ultrafiltration and thermization of milk on dairy farms in France have been under study since 1979. More recently five dairy farms in Brittany have been routinely producing 2:1 whole milk retentate for Emmental and St. Paulin cheese making. The milk processed is ultrafiltered at 35°C and thermized at 72°C for 15 s in an Ultratherm unit. Cheese quality generally appears satisfactory.In Eastern France a new specialty cheese industry has been started utilizing 4.5:1 whole milk retentate produced by ultrafiltration conducted at 40°C. The specialty cheese attains its characteristic white surface from Penicillium album mold. It has a bland, nutty flavor and very soft, smooth texture. A surface bluing phenomenon occurs after 14 d.     

Scaled model measurements of embedding impedances for SIS waveguide mixers

Several scaled models have been used to determine the contributions of various waveguide mount parameters to the embedding impedance of a mm-wave SIS mixer. Measured effects of waveguide height, substrate orientation and width, junction location, lead inductance and RF-filter impedance are presented and discussed.     

THERMAL RADIATION EFFECTS ON THE COMBUSTION BEHAVIOR OF POROUS CHAR PARTICLES

The effects of thermal radiation on the pseudosteady state and transient behavior of porous char particles exposed to an oxygen containing environment are investigated. The numerical simulation results show that particles that do not interchange radiant energy with their environment are characterized by wider ambient temperature regions where multiple steady states exist, higher combustion rates, and lower burning times
