Laboratory experiments have been carried out to study the dynamics of landslides commencing sub-aerially and ending inside
a water basin. A comparison between experiments with and without water shows differences in the final deposits. In the subaqueous
experiments the grains did not spread out from the mass in the same way as in the subaerial movement. It is suggested that
air can be trapped inside the mass which, released during the final stage of the underwater mass propagation, modifies the
buoyancy forces. Other effects observed during the air to water transition include the “jumping” and “tilting” of grains.
It is concluded that the air to water transition plays a key role in the dynamics of combined subaerial/subaqueous landslides.
The information obtained from the experiments may also be useful in the consideration of tsunami generation and the sedimentological

The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of lysozyme on proteic profiles of typical Italian cheeses such as Grana
Padano through surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The proteolytic activity of
ripening (from 0 to 24 months), confirmed by a decrease in casein, did not influence the intensity of lysozyme peaks. Furthermore,
ripened Grana Padano cheese could be differentiated on mass profiling from immature Grana Padano by the presence of particular

Primary plasma cell leukemia (pPCL) is a rare and aggressive variant of multiple myeloma (MM) which may represent a valid model for high-risk MM. This disease is associated with a very poor prognosis, and unfortunately, it has not significantly improved during the last three decades. New high-throughput technologies have allowed a better understanding of the molecular basis of this disease and moved toward risk stratification, providing insights for targeted therapy studies. This knowledge, added to the pharmacogenetic profile of new and old agents in the analysis of efficacy and safety, could contribute to help clinical decisions move toward a precision medicine and a better clinical outcome for these patients. AbstractThe dietary consumption of probiotics in the form of pharmaceuticals or functional food can improve human health and contribute to disease prevention. However, the biological activity and health potential of food-delivered probiotics can be severely compromised by the stress conditions encountered by the microorganisms throughout the manufacture process, from probiotic preparation to their inclusion into food, subsequent storage and ingestion. Here, we give an account of the stress factors that can have major negative impacts on probiotic viability and functionality, with a focus on food-related environmental adverse conditions. We also describe some of the mechanisms elicited by the microbial cells to counteract these stresses and summarize a few relevant approaches proposed in literature to develop more robust and competitive probiotics by enhancing their stress tolerance, with the aim to improve the efficacy and health value of probiotic functional food. 相似文献

The recent European bovine spongiform encephalopathy crisis has focused attention on the importance of adopting stringent control measures to avoid the risk of the diffusion of mad cow disease through meat meal-based animal feedstuffs. Potential adulteration of such feedstuffs with bone particles from terrestrial animals is determined by microscopic examination by law before the release of these feedstuffs for free circulation in the European Community. This study describes a DNA monitoring method to examine fish meal for contamination with mammalian and poultry products. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method based on the nucleotide sequence variation in the 12S ribosomal RNA gene of mitochondrial DNA was developed and evaluated. Three species-specific primer pairs were designed for the identification of ruminant, pig, and poultry DNA. The specificity of the primers used in the PCR was tested by comparison with DNA samples for several vertebrate species and confirmed. The PCR specifically detected mammalian and poultry adulteration in fish meals containing 0.125% beef, 0.125% sheep, 0.125% pig, 0.125% chicken, and 0.5% goat. A multiplex PCR assay for ruminant and pig adulteration was optimized and had a detection limit of 0.25%. 相似文献

Diet is the first to affect our intestinal microbiota and therefore the state of eubiosis. Several studies are highlighting the potential benefits of taking certain nutritional supplements, but a dietary regime that can ensure the health of the intestinal microbiota, and the many pathways it governs, is not yet clearly defined. We performed a systematic review of the main studies concerning the impact of an omnivorous diet on the composition of the microbiota and the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Some genera and phyla of interest emerged significantly and about half of the studies evaluated consider them to have an equally significant impact on the production of SCFAs, to be a source of nutrition for our colon cells, and many other processes. Although numerous randomized trials are still needed, the Mediterranean diet could play a valuable role in ensuring our health through direct interaction with our microbiota. 相似文献
