Millimeter-wave asymmetric Fabry-Perot modulators

We have designed, fabricated, and characterized GaAs-AlGaAs (λ=864 nm) asymmetric Fabry-Perot modulators with ≈37 GHz modulation frequency response, comparable to the fastest waveguide modulators. The modulation response saturates at high optical powers due to saturation of the excitonic absorption and heating effects, but the frequency response is independent of the incident optical intensity, since it depends only on the RC time constant, and not on the carrier transit time. The device design takes advantage of the fact that the quantum-confined Stark effect is more pronounced at some distance from the absorption edge to achieve a modulator with ⩾20 dB contrast and ≈3 dB insertion loss for ±2 V operating voltage, but only 21 fF capacitance. The DC bias used to move the operating point off the absorption edge has the additional benefits of improving the linearity and chirp of the device, as well as the saturation intensity. Here we present measurements of the modulation and photocurrent responses of the modulators, calculate the RC and transit times for the device, analyze the saturation mechanisms, and discuss the linearity and chirp of the device from the perspective of a high-speed digital optical communications system     

Synthesis and Properties of the Bi-Based Superconducting Powder Prepared by the Pechini Process

Bi-based superconductors are of great interest in high-temperature superconductors. We describe what is believed to be the first synthesis of these materials using the Pechini process, a low-temperature synthetic method that often yields inorganic oxide of excellent phase purity and well-controlled stoichiometry. Using this process, it has been possible to synthesize phase-pure Bi-2223 phase by calcining the appropriate polymeric precursors in air at 800°C for several hours. The superconductivity studies show that the Pechini-synthesized materials appear to offer high-quality performance.

Mast cell activation and migration to lymph nodes during induction of an immune response in mice

The mast cell response in skin and lymph nodes was examined during the sensitization phase of dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB)-induced contact hypersensitivity in mice. Degranulation of 62% of mast cells in DNFB-exposed skin was evident within 30 min of a dual application of DNFB, reaching a peak of 77% at 24 h, and persisting in 42% after 5 d. Abundant expression of macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1alpha and MIP-1beta mRNAs and proteins was observed in keratinocytes, and mast cell degranulation was significantly inhibited after administration of neutralizing antibodies to MIP-1alpha, but not MIP-1beta. During DNFB sensitization, the mast cell density in the skin decreased by half, concurrent with a fivefold expansion of mast cell numbers in draining lymph nodes. Fluorescent-labeled mast cells injected into the skin appeared in draining lymph nodes after application of DNFB, followed by subsequent migration to the spleen. In lymph nodes, mast cells were an abundant and predominant source of MIP-1beta, neutralization of which partially inhibited T lymphocyte recruitment. These results indicate that mast cells contribute to the induction of this primary immune response by activation at and migration from the site of antigen encounter to draining lymph nodes, wherein they mediate T lymphocyte recruitment by production of MIP-1beta.
