Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes (PfE) were collected from acutely infected children in The Gambia and Tanzania and cultured for more than 30 hr until the parasites were mature trophozoites. Sera collected from these countries, other African countries, Asia, and South America were used in the PfE microagglutination test to determine whether PfE from East and West Africa share surface antigens. From the patterns of agglutination reactivity, we identified extensive antigenic diversity in surface antigens, but obtained no evidence for greater differences between isolates from East or West Africa and those within one region. The majority of sera from immune adults from The Gambia, Tanzania, Sudan, Nigeria, or Ghana were pan-agglutinating, and agglutinated all PfE isolates from The Gambia and Tanzania. Some sera from immune adults of Irian Jaya also agglutinated each of the seven African isolates, while others agglutinated many but not all of the isolates, similar to sera from immune adults of Flores, Indonesia. In contrast, sera from nonimmune adults from Colombia agglutinated few of the African isolates. It was remarkable, however, that sera from nonimmune Colombians agglutinated any African isolates. Our results are consistent with the following conclusions: some PfE surface antigen(s) are very diverse; this diversity is a feature of the parasite worldwide; the repertoire of isolate-specific surface antigens, although large, includes antigens that are either identical or antigenically cross-reactive in geographically very distant parasite populations; and African adults have pan-agglutinating antibodies that may contribute to protective immunity. Such pan-agglutinating antibodies could reflect the accumulation of a large repertoire of isolate-specific antibodies. The contribution of antibody against any shared PfE surface antigen to the pan-agglutinating reactivities is unknown and awaits development of the appropriate reagents.  相似文献

We explored the relationships between information processing and language in order to further the understanding of language disturbances in psychiatric patients. To assess the impact of reduced processing capacity on language, 50 undergraduates completed an interview concurrent with a category monitoring task and a control interview without a concurrent task. Syntactic complexity, verbosity, and pause patterns were all disrupted by a reduction in processing capacity. In addition, individual differences in syntactic complexity and information processing were significantly associated, even after accounting for verbal intelligence. We discuss the relevance of the results for understanding language disturbances in psychopathology and hypothesize that a reduction in processing capacity may underlie the decreased syntactic complexity, decreased verbal output, and increased pause length found in schizophrenia. The efficacy and safety of remifentanil and alfentanil for patients undergoing major abdominal surgery were compared. Premedicated patients received a loading dose of remifentanil (1.0 microgram.kg-1; n = 116) and a continuous infusion of 0.5 microgram.kg-1.min-1, or a loading dose of alfentanil (25 micrograms.kg-1; n = 118) and a continuous infusion of 1.0 microgram.kg-1.min-1. Propofol was administered (10 mg every 10 s) until loss of consciousness. Patients' lungs were ventilated with 66% nitrous oxide and 0.5% (end-tidal) isoflurane in oxygen. The study drug infusion rate was reduced by 50% 5 min after intubation. Alfentanil was discontinued 15 min before the end of surgery, whereas remifentanil was continued in the immediate postoperative period at a reduced dose. Responses to intubation (28%) and skin incision (17%) occurred approximately twice as often in the alfentanil group (15% and 8%; p = 0.014 and p = 0.037, respectively). More patients receiving alfentanil had one or more responses to surgery (72% vs. 57%; p = 0.016). The time to spontaneous respiration, adequate respiration, response to verbal command and time to recovery room discharge were similar. However, owing to decreased variability, the time to extubation was shorter with remifentanil than with alfentanil (p = 0.048). There was a similar overall incidence of adverse events in both groups, 82% and 75% of patients, respectively. Adverse events associated with remifentanil were rapidly controlled by dose reductions. The incidence of intra-operative hypotension and bradycardia was higher in the remifentanil group (p < or = 0.033). An initial remifentanil infusion rate of 0.1 microgram.kg-1.min-1 titrated to individual need provided postoperative pain relief in the presence of adequate respiration in 71% of patients. When using remifentanil in the immediate postoperative setting, rapid administration of bolus doses and infusion rate increases resulted in a relatively high incidence of muscle rigidity, respiratory depression and apnoea. Changing the postoperative regimen to avoid rapid changes in remifentanil blood concentration resulted in more effective analgesia and dramatically reduced the incidence of adverse events during this period. In patients undergoing major abdominal surgery, remifentanil appears to offer superior intra-operative haemodynamic stability during stressful surgical events compared with alfentanil without compromising recovery from anaesthesia. Remifentanil can be administered as a postoperative analgesic agent at a starting dose of 0.1 microgram-.kg-1.min-1; however, it should only be used in the presence of adequate supervision and monitoring of the patient. Administration of bolus doses is not recommended in this setting.  相似文献

A cubic dependence of frequency on temperature has been experimentally observed for surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) delay lines fabricated on X-cut quartz. The SAWs propagate on the X-cut surface in a direction between the positive Y direction and the Z direction, 33.44 degrees from the +Y axis. An experimental system is described for measuring the temperature sensitivity of the delay lines. The measurements show that the relative position of the delay-line transducers has a strong influence on both the frequency versus temperature curve and the insertion loss versus temperature curve.  相似文献

An electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system that uses the optimal current method to inject currents and the regularized Newton-Raphson algorithm to reconstruct an image of resistivity distribution is discussed. Iterative methods to derive the optimal current patterns through iterative physical measurements are developed. Direct methods to first determine the resistance matrix of a resistivity distribution through a set of current bases is injected and the measured voltage responses are stored. This permits iterative reconstruction techniques to operate on the stored data without requiring lengthy data taking from the object and reduces the effects of motion artifacts. The direct methods have superior performance as compared to the iterative methods in both optimal current and voltage generation. The results obtained with three sets of current bases are studied.  相似文献

Catena-poly[fac-triiodobismuth(III)-tris-(µ-ethane-1,2-diylbis(diphenylphosphane oxide-κ2O,O′))], a 2-D sheet network of BiI3 was synthesized from BiI3 and ethane-1,2-diylbis(diphenylphosphane oxide) (DppeO2) in tetrahydrofuran. The crystal structure revealed a trigonal structure with three-fold symmetry at Bi. Bismuth centers show fac-BiI3O3 coordination, with Bi–I?=?2.9416(2) Å and Bi–O?=?2.4583(17) Å. The I–Bi–I and O–Bi–O angles (95.520(7)° and 79.04(6)°, respectively) indicate trigonal distortion in the Bi octahedron. Bridging DppeO2 ligands centered on inversion centers give rise to a 2-D sheet polymer. The 8.3 Å thick sheets consist of three layers in a sandwich structure. The outer layers are composed of phenyl rings and BiI3 groups with the iodide atoms pointing outward. The central layer consists of the O=PCH2CH2P=O bridging groups. Computational results suggest that semi-conducting behavior arises from Bi(III) centers. A halide to DppeO2 π* transition is suggested by theoretical results.  相似文献

A new laser blow-off system for use in impurity transport studies on Alcator C-Mod was developed and installed for the 2009 run campaign. Its design included capabilities for multiple impurity injections during a single plasma pulse and remote manipulation of the ablated spot size. The system uses a 0.68 J, Nd:YAG laser operating at up to 10 Hz coupled with the fast beam steering via a 2D piezoelectric mirror mount able to move spot locations in the 100 ms between laser pulses and a remote controllable optical train that allow ablated spot sizes to vary from ~0.5 to 7 mm. The ability to ablate a wide range in target Z along with Alcator C-Mod's extensive diagnostic capabilities (soft x-ray, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV), charge exchange spectroscopy, etc.) allows for detailed studies of the impurity transport dependencies and mechanisms. This system has demonstrated the achievement of all its design goals including the ability for non-perturbative operation allowing for insight into underlying impurity transport processes. A detailed overview of the laser blow-off system and initial results of operation are presented. This includes an investigation into the characterization of impurity confinement in the I-mode confinement regime recently investigated on C-Mod.  相似文献
