The objective of this study was to elucidate the controversial relationship between the molecular weight (MW) of chitosans and their antibacterial activity (upon different inoculum levels, at several concentrations). The influence of food components on the activity was also ascertained, as well as acceptance by a sensory panel. All the compounds tested exhibited antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. This activity was shown to be closely dependent on the inoculum level, MW and concentration used. Within 4h at 10(3) cells/mL, all five compounds, at every concentration (0.5%, 0.25% and 0.1%, w/v), proved to be bactericidal; for higher inocula, 0.1% (w/v) was only bacteriostatic; at 10(7) or 10(5) cells/mL, and independently of the inoculum level, 0.25% (w/v) of any chitooligosaccharide (COS) mixture was sufficient to reduce the E. coli initial population by at least 3 log cycles; COS never exhibited bactericidal action over S. aureus, unlike high and medium MW chitosans-which, at 0.5% (w/v), presented a bactericidal effect even against 10(7) cells/mL. When incorporated in liquid food matrices, medium and high MW chitosans maintained their activity, for both matrices and bacteria, although a slower activity was noticeable in milk; however, COS lost their activity upon both bacteria in milk after 4-8h. Furthermore, addition of chitosans to apple juice led to several unpleasant off-flavors, such as astringency and after taste--which increased in magnitude with MW.  相似文献

This paper reviews the most common formulations to obtain the compression strength of long fiber composites due to fiber buckling. This failure mode was first studied by Rosen (Fibre Composite Materials, pp. 37–45, 1965) who defined two different fiber buckling modes, extensional and transverse. Further studies improved the first model proposed by Rosen by defining with more accuracy the mechanics of the problem. Although each formulation use a different approach to solve the problem, all of them agree in the dependence of fiber buckling on three main parameters: matrix shear strength, fiber initial misalignments and volumetric participation of the fibers in the composite. Once having described the different approaches used, and the parameters on which they depend, this paper describes a new formulation capable of obtaining the compression strength of composites taking into account the fiber buckling phenomenon. This formulation uses the serial/parallel mixing theory developed by Rastellini et al. (Comput. Struct. 86(9):879–896, 2008) to simulate the composite, and takes advantage of knowing the mechanical performance of the composite constituents to simulate the fiber buckling phenomenon. This is done with an homogenization procedure. It consists in introducing the interaction between fibers and matrix into their respective constitutive equations. The interaction between fiber and matrix takes into account fiber initial misalignments, its volumetric participation and the mechanical properties of both constituents.  相似文献

Twenty-six flow curves determined under dynamic recrystallization (DRX) conditions on 11 different steels were analyzed. The double-differentiation method was used to define the critical strain εc for initiation of DRX. The “athermal” hardening parameter h and the dynamic recovery parameter r were evaluated from the work-hardening behavior prior to εc. The saturation stresses σsat pertaining to the unrecrystallized regions as well as the associated work-hardening curves, σrecov, were derived in this way. The net softening attributable to DRX was then defined as the difference between the σrecov and experimental curves. Avrami plots were prepared from all 26 sets of data. The time exponents were all in the neighborhood of 3.0; however, the strain rate and temperature dependences differed considerably from their static values. The dependence of the time of half-softening, t50, on strain rate and temperature is used to predict the DRX curves expected under industrial conditions.  相似文献

The interest and actions towards introducing renewables for off-grid regions has increased due to their ostensible cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness and quality services provided. Nevertheless, in many isolated areas diesel generators appear as a common option, confirming that there is a need for financial support mechanisms that aid the introduction of renewables due to their higher initial investment costs.This paper proposes a so-called ‘tropicalisation’ of the Feed-in Tariff scheme to promote the introduction of hybrid systems in isolated communities based on the idea of awarding for each kWh produced by renewable energies a premium value during a guaranteed period of time. The proposed Renewable Energy Premium Tariff (RPT) scheme is an alternative mechanism to the usual initial investment donation for off-grid energy development projects by recognising the production of renewable electricity and opting for a long-term sustainability of the projects. Ecuador presents ideal conditions to study the introduction of such a ‘tropicalised’ scheme since a Feed-in Law including off-grid projects was established in 2002 and since there are governmental and local efforts for the introduction of renewable hybrids in isolated regions.Modelling of the introduction of photovoltaics (PVs) into diesel systems for several mini-grids located in isolated regions of Ecuador has been performed, and included a detailed financial analysis for optimisation of RPT values and a comparison with existing stand-alone diesel systems. The results show the cost-effectiveness of PV/diesel hybrids over diesel gensets, taking into account present and future diesel prices. To obtain long-term sustainability of the project, the RPT values are set at 0.70–1.20$ kWh covering the operability of the whole system for 20 years, where the renewable fraction should have the largest share in the hybrid system. The proposed mechanism is expected to aid the introduction of renewable technologies to bring solutions and sustainable energy options to final users of off-grid isolated regions.  相似文献

A model for the Bunsen section of the Sulfur–Iodine thermo-chemical cycle is proposed, where sulfur dioxide reacts with excess water and iodine to produce two demixing liquid aqueous phases (H2SO4 rich and HI rich) in equilibrium. Considering the mild temperature and pressure conditions, the UNIQUAC activity coefficient model combined with Engels' solvation model is used. The complete model is discussed, with HI solvation by water and by iodine as well as H2SO4 solvation by water, leading to a very high complexity with almost hundred parameters to be estimated from experimental data. Taking into account the water excess, a successful reduced model with only 15 parameters is proposed after defining new apparent species. Acids total dissociation and total H+ solvation by water are the main assumptions. Results show a good agreement with published experimental data between 25 °C and 120 °C.  相似文献

The HIx ternary system (H2O–HI–I2) is the latent source of hydrogen for the Sulfur–Iodine thermo-chemical cycle. After analysis of the literature data and models, a homogeneous approach with the Peng–Robinson equation of state used for both the vapor and liquid phase fugacity calculations is proposed for the first time to describe the phase equilibrium of this system. The MHV2 mixing rule is used, with UNIQUAC activity coefficient model combined with of hydrogen iodide solvation by water. This approach is theoretically consistent for HIx separation processes operating above HI critical temperature. Model estimation is done on selected literature vapor–liquid, liquid–liquid, vapor–liquid–liquid and solid–liquid equilibrium data for the ternary system and the three binaries subsystems. Validation is done on the remaining literature data. Results agree well with the published data, but more experimental effort is needed to improve modeling of the HIx system.  相似文献
