Compared the discriminative powers of (1) the mental and motor indexes of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID) (N. Bayley, 1969), (2) the 5-cluster regrouping of the BSID by R. Kohen-Raz (1967), and (3) the 7-cluster regrouping of the BSID by L. J. Yarrow et al (1975). Ss were 29 3.5-mo-old, 53 6-mo-old, and 57 9-mo-old Haitian, Canadian, and Vietnamese infants. Ss' performances on the BSID were analyzed with the mental and motor scales of the BSID, the 5-cluster regrouping, and the 7-cluster regrouping. Differential cortical activation by cognitive processing was studied using dimensional complexity, a measure derived from nonlinear dynamics that indicates the degrees of freedom (complexity) of a dynamic system. We examined the EEG of 32 healthy subjects at rest, during a visually presented calculation task, and during a moving shape perception task. As a nonlinear measure of connectivity, the mutual dimension of selected electrode pairs was used. The first Lyapunov coefficient was also calculated. Data were tested for non-linearity using a surrogate data method and compared to spectral EEG measures (power, coherence). Surrogate data testing confirmed the presence of nonlinear structure in the data. Cognitive activation led to a highly significant rise in dimensional complexity. While both tasks activated central, parietal and temporal areas, mental arithmetic showed frontal activation and an activity maximum at T3, while the moving shape task led to occipital activation and a right parietal activity maximum. Analysis of mutual dimension showed activation of a bilateral temporal-right frontal network in calculation. The Lyapunov coefficient showed clear topographic variation, but was not significantly changed by mental tasks (p<.09). While dimensional complexity was almost unrelated to power values, nonlinear (mutual dimension) and linear (coherence) measures of connectivity shared up to 37% of variance. Data are interpreted in terms of increased cortical complexity as a result of recruitment of asynchronously active, distributed neuronal assemblies in cognition. The topography of nonlinear dynamics are related to neuropsychological and neuroimaging findings on mental calculation and moving shape perception.  相似文献

Twenty-nine patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder as diagnosed in accordance with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed., revised; American Psychiatric Association, 1987) who did not have overt compulsive rituals were randomly assigned to treatment and waiting-list conditions. Patients in the treatment condition received cognitive-behavioral therapy consisting of a detailed explanation of the occurrence and maintenance of obsessive thoughts, exposure to obsessive thoughts, response prevention of all neutralizing strategies, cognitive restructuring, and relapse prevention. Compared with waiting-list patients, treated patients improved significantly on measures of severity of obsessions, current functioning, self-report obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and anxiety. When waiting-list patients were subsequently treated, the combined group improved on all outcome measures. Treatment gains were maintained at 6-month follow-up. Results indicate that cognitive-behavioral therapy is effective in the treatment of patients with obsessive thoughts, a group that has often been considered resistant to treatment. This article aims to clarify why, and by which mechanisms, exercise may influence the normal menstrual cycle. Therefore, the vast amount of literature on this subject is reviewed and a critical appraisal of the most widespread hypotheses if offered. The strikingly low body mass which frequently accompanies exercise-related menstrual irregularities (ERMI) has led some authors to develop a hypothesis which postulates that a critical percentage of body fat is essential to trigger normal menstruation. The relevance of any reference to anorexia nervosa to support this view lacks consistency: female athletes differ in many ways from patients with anorexia nervosa, not least in their excellent physical status which is essential to deliver first-class performances. ERMI is not identical to the so-called female athlete triad, a complicated pathology that involves ERMI, premature osteoporosis and disordered eating. ERMI itself does not seem to have any substantial pathological effects as long as attention is paid to preventing osteoporosis or stress fractures which may result from prolonged hypo-estrogenaemia. In the female athlete with ERMI who wishes to conceive, the accompanying subfertility may necessitate a response other than a prompt reduction in training intensity, as this is hardly a first choice for any top athlete. During recent years, a number of prospective studies have greatly contributed to our understanding of the complexity of the mechanisms involved in ERMI. Older hypotheses, such as those considering hyperprolactinaemia as the cornerstone of ERMI, have now been firmly rejected. The present hypotheses emphasise the importance of caloric deficiency and limited energy availability, although they still fail to identify the actual mechanism that causes ERMI. There is, however, evidence that ERMI is produced by a disturbance of the hypothalamic gonadotrophin-releasing hormone oscillator. This disturbance is caused by either an insufficient estrogen or progesterone feedback or by an imbalance of local opioid peptide and catecholamine activities mediated by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), corticotrophin-releasing hormone and insulin-like growth factor-1. More recent experiments have also linked ERMI with changes in steroid metabolism, in particular, an increasing activity of catecholestrogens possibly leading to enhanced intracerebral noradrenaline (norepinephrine) levels that may interfere with normal gonadotrophin release. This article demonstrates that the outcome of the many studies of ERMI is characterised by much controversy and numerous methodological flaws. The importance and complexity of some recent findings necessitate a comprehensive study which links older and newer findings within a critical perspective.  相似文献

Three glomus tumors of the fingers were detected using a dedicated hand and wrist low field (0.1 T) MR imager equipped with solenoidal coils allowing a FOV of 2 cm. Three-dimensional T1-, T*2-, or T2-weighted images were used (8 contiguous slices of 2 mm thickness). Glomus tumors had low or intermediate signal intensity (2 cases) or no signal (1 case) on T1-weighted images. On T*2- or T2-weighted images they had high signal intensity. MRI findings correlate well with surgery and biopsy.  相似文献

A nonlinear convex programming problem is solved by methods of interval arithmetic which take into account the input errors and the round-off errors. The problem is reduced to the solution of a nonlinear parameter dependent system of equations.
